Pepcid for yellow bile puking Hello-first time on this forum. I have a 5 year old Yorkie-poo who is extremely healthy, playful and loveable. The only issue I seem to be having which has started about 9 months ago is Yogi would wake up in the morning or in the middle of the night and throw up numerous times of small piles of Yellow, foamy liquid along with me being able to hear his stomach making what seems to be gassy noises beforehand-never throw up from food but I of course took him to the vet ASAP . They normally would check everything on him, and say hes fine and that its just bile from not eating. Yogi is very attached to me and will sometimes not touch his food until Im home-after he throws up hes completly fine beside being a bit tired and just seeming like his belly isnt feeling well. Finally, the vet reccommended to give him a half of a 10mg Pepcid every night before bed which has worked and his puking has stopped. which is great but Im worried that this will have some kind of affect after giving him that every night. Vet and a second opinion Vet says its completely fine and will do no harm. My apologies for the long note- just curious on anyones opinion on this. Yogi eats Nutro small breed adult and has always been on the same food with no issues. Like I said hes overall healthy and still so active and playful. Any suggesstions? Thanks!! |
I'm no expert but my personal opinion is not to use medicine unless there's no other alternative. Since the issue seems to be his tummy being empty so how about giving him a small snack before bed? Or perhaps make his dinner time little later? Will he eat yummy treats if you're not there? If so, how about those treat dispensing toys? |
My Zoey used to barf in the morning before I could feed her. The vet said she was doing this because of an empty stomach and I should feed her something before bedtime. I give her veggies at night and the barfing has stopped. I feed her right before going to bed. I do have to get up every morning and feed her before 7:30 or she will throw up. No sleeping in for me. |
Have you tried just giving him some kibble accessible 24 x 7 x 365 he can graze on it when he wants to, so he is not hungry and puking bile? Just wondering about your results, if you have already tried this...:D |
I have a pup who has issues with an empty tummy overnight. He is on Pepcid twice/day and a small meal at bedtime. |
MY Allie used to do this as well. I give her a tiny bit of Boiled Chicken Breast before she goes to bed. Don't have a problem now. |
Teddy did this in the morning when he was a pup. I make sure he has a few kibble treats before I go to bed. If a late night snack doesn't help, then use the Pepcid. |
Yes Yogi will eat at 730 8ish sometimes, but I still give him the pepcid because ive noticed before even with eating at that time he'll still puke once and a while so because I dont want him feeling crappy along with me not having to literally be up with him for sometimes 3 hours, with him puking every 25 minutes I rather give him the pepcid seeing its working and the Vet telling me its no harm. I feel like his belly is very sensitive so he gets only apples, green beans, carrots for snack SOMETIMES and a corn free, gluten free organice chewy treat called " Buddies" which are sold at Stop n Shop-there a bit pricey, 399 a bag but small, and no additives. Hes also EXTREMELY picky with treats wont eat anything thats hard, or a buscuit like treat. Very Very spoiled YorkiePoo I have, but Ive probably been the blame-so much love for him!~ Thank You for responses, glad to have joined |
He will have atreat if Im not there-Yogi is one of those eat when he feels like it kind of dog always has been. |

Neither of my guys do well with carrots. I know they are a popular treat for dogs. |

Pepcid is fine if a bedtime snack alone doesn't work. Nutro has quite the history and won't do a dog with tummy troubles a lot of good. |
Eating late helped Gracie with this problem. She figured it out herself though. We hadn't resorted to pepcid since it wasn't happening all the time but one night, when we had her kibble bowl in our bedroom (we werein the middle of moving and didn't want her wandering around the house) she woke us up around midnight with her crunching! She did it the next few nights and so now we bring her kibble and water into our room every night (she sleeps with us of course!) And like clockwork she's crunching away around midnight and she hasn't thrown up bile since. |
I would be careful with any antacid long term. I'm speaking from my own history as I am a paraplegic , but over time it started causing really bad absorption problems, where my body did not absorb calcium properly, which led to high potassium, which if I did not have bloodwork done every 3 months and found out, would have shortly stopped my heart. I myself would maybe try a sensitive stomach food, as well as leaving him kibble o snack on at night while you are asleep. Gizmo happens to be one of those late night snackers as well :-) |
We had to stop free feeding the pups due to Finnigan becoming very overweight and ran into that problem with Gwenni. Tried giving her carrots/treats before bed and it didn't work, so we give Pepcid AC before bed. If the vet checked him out I wouldn't be worried. |
Out of curiosity....does your little guy happen to have nasal congestion from allergies or anything?? One of my pups has a stuffy nose and sometimes I think it drains into his stomach and upsets it when he's sleeping on his side. I have a friend who has the same problem....throws up phlegm in the morning because it's been draining into their stomach all night. |
Also due to it being on an empty stomach it could be bile reflux and not acid reflux. If its bile reflux, there could be gallstones or a problem itself with the gallbladder function. |

I would personally, definitely, not be interested in long term use of an antacid...for me or my Yorkies. |

Sophie Kate has the same issue in the morning so we resolved it by giving her a lite snack of dry kibble before bed. It has helped so much and now she knows she gets a bedtime snack and paces around while I am getting ready for bed waiting for her yummy snack (my term for it, her terms are give me the food woman). |
Turbo used to throw up yellow bile all the time. Vet said to give a snack b4 bedtime & split his meals into 3. He was prescribed pepcid a/c & tagamet. I didn't give it to him tho bc I didn't think it was an acid problem. Did a NutriScan test recently & it turns out he's intolerant/sensitive to certain proteins, like chicken. Since removing the offending foods from his diet, he has not thrown up since. I am not saying to do the test bc it is expensive, but when dogs are intolerant of a food, they throw up. I would stop all treats & start a limited ingredient diet, that way it's easier to pin point the offending food/ ingredient. Give him something to eat b4 bedtime if he throws up early in the morning. If he stops throwing up yellow bile, it was simply bc he had an empty stomach. But since this started 9 months ago, I think it's some type of food intolerance. How are his stools? |
Didn't know nutro ultra had a history? He's been on the same food since a puppy with no issues |
