yorkie in pet store I was on my home from work today and to stop at the pet store to pick up guinnee pig shavings and food as well as dog treat, and they had two yorkies in cages  . I gotta tell you it broke my heart to see them in there and to force myself to go after holding them. I know I know no pet stores!!!! :( oh but they looked so sad in those cages. I wanted to buy them sooooo bad they were sooooo adorable but couldnt bring myself to support pet stores. Please someone tell me I did the right thing. sue |
I agree about the pet stores but I would have felt the same way as you. Probably only the price would have kept me from getting them out of the cage. I'm too weak! |
No--you Did The Right Thing! Just Think About Their Momma In That Mill Pumping Out A Litter Every Heat. If You Buy--you Support This. I Know It's Hard But You Have To Be Strong. =) Good Job! |
Good Job Okay you for sure did the right thing, but you can do even more. STOP buying anything from them. It's supporting their business, and I know it may be a hassle to find a new supplier...but in the end...it might be saving puppies later down the road it they cannot stay in business! I know it's so sad in there and any little step we can take to not help them is good. |
You did the right thing, I bet it was expensive. How much were they? |
Refuse to buy ANY item at any store that sells companion animals. It is hard to by-pass stores that have birds, hamsters, mice, snakes and the like but there are stores like WalMart that do not sell animals bred and supplied by puppy mills. |
I totally agree! I really think you did do the right thing. And maybe, like some others have said, you should find other places such as PetsMart, PetCo, Target, Wal-Mart that don't buy things from puppy mills because you'll be giving them more revenue + profit to buy more puppies from puppy mills. :p |
I agree I agree, but I do know how you felt. I too almost bought a yorkie from a pet store about 18 mnths ago. I am glad I did not. I shop at Petsmart because hey do not sell any animals, other than those of the rat variety, fish and adoption rescue animals. I have a Pet City here in town that is right down the street from where I live, it is very convenient for me on the way home to stop there to get food, etc. I do not go there, I go out of my way up to Petco or Petsmart becuase they do not have animals. The Pet City usually has betwen ten and twenty dogs and about 10 kittens, and then rabbits, etc. The place reeks of animal waste and urine. I feel extremely sorry for the animals, but buying one would aid in perpetuating the mill situation. |
I usually go to petco or petsmart but I was in a hurry and happened to be right there by this pet store. I know i did the right thing but it was heartbreaking. :( . when I saw them I asked to hold the smallest one and the girl was like ohhh hold on i'll clean her for you. I guess it was good thing I asked to see her because as she was taking her out I could see the feces stuck to her fur on the back side  . So they bathed her and dried her and put a bow on her. Otherwise this poor thing would have been sitting there with poop stuck on her. How does one see these puppies being born and then just give them to a petshop to stick in a cage. I would love to stick one of those breeders in a cage like these puppies. Allthough I did stop two people from buying a puppy while I was there :D . As I was waiting to see the puppy, (I had my shepherd training club jacket on) I was aked a few questions cause they thoyght I worked there, lol. I said to one couple "you see how these puppies are in a cage" he says yes, I go" you know they are unsocialized. are now accustomed to pooping in thier cage, and I can gaurantee you there will be health problems (cause the puppy was coughing). I told him to look for a breeder in our area. I busted out laughing cause the one thing that really got him to change his mind was I told him it would probably also be a lot cheaper. sorry for long post!!!! sue |
Good for you for educating someone else about the horrors of buying a petshop puppy (usually) I would also suggest that you not shop there again as well. I buy from Petsmart and online excusively. But that's me. I know how you feel. There was a pet shop at Pismo Beach here in California and I couldn't help myself and ask to hold one of the puppies. They told me that unless I intended to buy it, that I couldn't hold it. Funny, huh? So being the meany that I am, I asked where the dog came from, if they support puppy mills, all kinds of things. I know I made the employee uncomfortable but I couldn't help myself. I too spoke to a few other customers and recommended they search for "puppy mill" on the internet before buying from a pet store. I'm not sure if I made a difference, but I tried :) |
we have small pet store in our little tow, and i know some of puppies are from locals, but god knows where the other puppies came from though their puppy crates are about 5'X5' and ive seen pet stores store the same amount of puppies in lil crates.. sad. i have noticed alot of crowding of their vermin types tho, but it looked like the vermin liked it this way, they ignore the bulk of their cage and just squeeze into little areas by the dozens. (mice are weird) |
What was so wierd was when I was holding the puppy I noticed that where the poop was stuck she had shaved that area. well iI was looking and it looked like her rectum was sticking out, is that normal? I mean it was really noticable to the point where I thought the pup was pooping. When I asked the girl about she said the rectum was a bit swollen because she really scrubbed her clean cause the poop was sticking to all the fur by that area. How screwed up is that :( . That cant be normal can it cause I take my shepherd in once a month for a grooming and his is never like that. Thats when I really wanted to take the pup and run but i knew I couldnt. I guess I felt like this poor puppy was begging me to take her cause she kept giving me these lil puppy kisses :animal-sm . I will never step foot in a pet shop like that again because I get so depressed seeing all those puppies in those disgusting cages. sorry for the long post again it's just it really bothered me. sue |
:( i know the feeling of seeing these little things in cages and not being able to rescue them.... 2 years ago we were in Spain for a holiday and we walked past a pet store, there was this tiny little yorkiepup in the window, it was hard to walk past this and the only reason i didnt walk in to buy it is coz we still had our older yorkie, she was already deteriorating at that time so i didnt want to confront her with a pup of a few weeks old, if that wasnt the case i wouldnt have been able to refuse the puppy... its heartbreaking to see it :( |
that swolen rectum thing would be normal if scrubed hard to clean, the scrubbing that hard to clean it is the abnormal part. she could have been more patient with the cleaning process, a lill warm water and 5 minutes would have done the trick. |
Hey Sue - which pet store were you at? Did it happen to be a certain one in Scottsdale Center or a certain one on Archer? Just curious. I went a Petland in one of the south 'burbs of Chicago and they had a female yorkie (they only carry females) for $1600. I had absolutely no intention of buying from them -- just wanted to see what a puppy mill puppy looked like. I was suprised, but she was gorgeous -- beautiful coat, but she looked very unhealthy. They kept telling me she came from a "private" breeder. It really *pissed* me off. Also, my boyfriend's brotehr bought a maltese with papers from a pet store in the chicago burbs and she is DEFINITELY at LEAST half Bischon. So, that just goes to show what AKC papers mean. |
SSGUZZY---she was wrong! I got my female when I was 8 months pregnant. I went into labor and thought it would be better for a relative to keep her during my hospital stay so she would have someone to watch her nonstop instead of someone sticking her in a kennel. When I got out of the hospital I was dying to see my baby after 5 days in the hospital. When we picked her up her rectum has swollen and open to about the size of a dime. So I took her to my vet and she had to stay overnight. She had developed a terrible case of diareaha from being scared. =( AND when she got home I had to give her pills for 5 days and put cream on her rectum until the tube ran out. It is not a condition but rather how their little systems react to stress and diareaha (spelling may be wrong) It cleared up quick but I cried and cried. I was so worried about my baby and blamed myself for the whole ordeal. So that's what was behind that. StewiesMom--Petland stores have an option to buy from private breeders also. Our local store owner is very nice and does most of her business local. She is begging me to sell her one of my puppies if I breed my female. She said they bring 1400 easy. Here's my point, MOST petstores are terrible,YES. The one in North Augusta, SC--I have been in several times and dogs have been loose in the store--the employees said the owner likes for them to have a little free time. =) I was happy to hear this =) and she said the didn't run the traditional way and didn't make as much profit because of their buying practices, however, didn't spend hardly any money on meds because of the breeder decsisions she'd made. I didn't know the franchise owners COULD choose instead of buying from a broker all the time. I do not buy but have taken my dog a few time and they allowed all the "loose" babies to play with her. If all ran the way this one does I might not oppose them so much. There was one in our mall that was closed because an employee but a dog that was having seizures in a plastic bag and beat it up against a stone wall until the dog was no longer moving. NOW that is sickening. Petland pulled their name from the store but it's still open. I won't even go in there. =( |
3 Attachment(s) Here's some pictures of protests from the Petland I was speaking of. They sell very sick puppies and are abusive. I don't understand how any "private breeder" coudl sell their puppies to a pet store and never know which homes they go to and whether or not their families are worthy. On Sunday, October 24, 2004, brand new rep, Brandy G. gathered a few others together to boycott the sale of puppies at the Petland Pet Store in Tinley Park, Illinois. Information on puppy mills and Petland was passed out. They were invited inside the store to see the dogs and the backroom, but declined the offer. A report was given, saying "we changed a few minds and educated a lot. Several people were on their way to purchase a new pup and decided against it after talking to us." http://www.critterhaven.org/petlandprotest.htm |
Hey kristi, you got it right on the nose! It was pet luv in scottsdale mall. it stunk so bad in there  . I know what you mean this lil girl was sooooo adorable, but did not and could not support a puppy mill. I am still looking though and hopefull will find someone soon. I hope to get my puppy sometime in june/july. (my b-day present to my self  . sue |
I held a yorkie in a pet shop once. It was shaking uncontrollable. I thought maybe the breed in general did this until I started talking to breeders. I've only seen my dog shake once and it was for a very short time. |
Pet Luv... disgusting and dirty as can be! A girl I went to grade school with works there; I think that her family may actually own it, but I can't be certain. I used to have a black lab and I went in there just to look at the puppies... I asked to hold the Lab. I swear she must have been 3 or 4 weeks old -- waaaay too young to be away from her mother. To make a long story short, I seriously thought about stealing the dog. No one was looking and I was only 16 at the time so I figured the consequences woudln't be too bad for petty theft. Besides, I could just claim that I was rescuing the dog and maybe bring some attention to these disgusting puppy stores. It's strange that they only carry girl puppies, too. When I asked the woman at Petland she said "well, really everyone wants girl puppies, you know so you can put nail polish on them and carry them around in a purse.... ribbons and bows types stuff". I got *sooooo* angry. I told her that I was getting a baby boy. She offered to "order" one for me. I politely told her that I would not be getting my baby from a puppy mill. Disgusting! Makes me wonder where the boy puppies go... |

I wish I would have found this web site before I bought my puppy. I bought Hailey at Petland. I did not know where they came from. I had never even heard of a puppymill before i started reading this forum. My husband and I are thinking of getting another yorkie and we will be buying one from a breeder. I no longer even shop at pet stores that sell pups. Sorry, I did not mean to support puppymills but I have educated everyone I know about there practices. |
Sabrina -- Hailey is beautiful. I always mean to private message you to tell you that! You definitely got lucky with your baby. |
Thanks so much Kristy. I think she is perfect. I am glad I was able to give her a good home. What does the donating member under your avator mean? |
This entire post is nauseating and is breaking my heart!!! Who the he!! would put a small dog in a bag and smash it against the wall?? Why are these people not in jail and why can't their punishment be the same they inflict on these poor innocent animals!! It is disgusting. So glad I wasnt in the pet shop because I would have been weak and would have needed to save that poor little puppy despite it coming from a puppy mill. Sometimes I just really hate people. So sorry to say, but some can be so horribly cruel. It really sadens me. :( |
People are so insane to buy from those pet stores etc. I can't believe how much they charge for them...and you just know they most likely have some sort of a health problem already..I'm so glad i didn't settle for a pup at one of those places. Im so happy that the breeder I got my dog from had her exercising, playing and ineratcting with people. :D |
this is just my opinion but shouldnt people be stoping the problem from the puppy mill it self the stores are just doing what they are told i think these poor puppies that sit in cages all the time they start out at 1000 then go down to 100 if there not bought by then they get sent back to the puppy mill to get breed again dont these puppy mill puppies deserve a home too i know there prob not that heathy but there always a vet and if they dont get bought they will just die shouldnt these puppies have a chance too i think it should be stoped by the source cause you protest a store and theyll close down but open somewhere else its not helping nobody get mad at me this is just my opinion that ive been holding in since ive seen this thread |
You can always ask to see the paperwork on a particular puppy. They will usually show you especially if you act interested in buying the puppy. I have yet to see a puppy whelped within a 100 mile radius-except the ones who come from the Amish puppy mills in PA.. I have been escorted out of local pet stores for insisting on discussing the conditions or the records.. |
Amish puppy mills?? really?? I have never heard of that. I thought they respected and cared for their animals. |
