Hello, new & need advice & opinions!

Hi all, I just joined your site, so this post won't be all pretty bc I don't know what I'm doing ! In the past few weeks, I have decided to get serious about researching & finally fulfilling my desire to have a yorkie. That is how I found this site, & have been reading, reading, & reading some more! In fact, I read so much here & elsewhere that now I'm just thoroughly confused. I need everyone's input on best breeders in Georgia to get my baby from. I looked at that thread, but really didn't read about any in ga. I live in Georgia & thought that it would be best for the baby to not have to be shipped, so I'm wondering about that too. I have a 2 yr old female red retriever & 8 yr old female cairn terrier/Maltese....oh & 2 cats. I'm thinking a male yorkie would be best. If there really aren't any great breeders in ga, then I guess I will have to go outside the state bc since I've finally decided to find my yorkie, I'm not going to just "settle" for one. I don't have small children, it's just me, my husband, & my 31 yr old mentally challenged son & our beloved "babies" who are all inside pets. I emailed one breeder already & received a reply, but I really want some recommendations from you all that have your babies & experiences. Thanks for reading this long post & I am anxiously awaiting your replies.

Hi Mamav and welcome to YorkieTalk. It is always a pleasure to welcome a fellow Georgian to the forum. I live in Rome - perhaps we are neighbors!

I don't personally know of any breeders in Georgia that I would recommend. My Lollie came from my friend/neighbor/show mentor but she isn't breeding at the present time. My newest show bitch pup, Lacie came from Anna Stringer in Bowling Green, KY. I would highly recommend her to anyone who is looking for a quality pup. Anna is a member of the YTCA who produces top quality Yorkies AND Anna is a wonderful person to work with. I can guarantee that it would be worth the drive to KY to acquire one of her pups.

I got Gina from puppyterriers.com they unfortunately don't keep the puppies more than 8 weeks, but I would still recommend them. My wife and I went to their home to meet the puppies and their mom, Bella, Bella is the alpha dog there, and Gina was the alpha puppy, both mom and Gina are very smart. They send weekly pictures and do a weekly video of all the puppies. My vet, whom I've know and used for over 10 years, said that Gina is the best looking Yorkie, physically, that she has seen in a long time, perfect bite, great knees, great hair, and her health is just great over all. Give their website a browsing and talk to them, I would get another from them again with no problems or concerns of what I was getting. Hope this helps, and they are in Cobbtown GA.

I normally find that breeders who skip one important step like not keeping the puppies until 12 weeks skip others like any available health and genetic testing. Also this breeder breeds females under 5 pounds and that is a big no no it is extremely dangerous to breed a female under 5 pounds so who if they really care about there dogs would do that? We have had many threads lately on biting and all of the pups had been taken from there mom before 12 weeks it really does make a big difference.

It's not easy to find an ethical breeder in Georgia. Unfortunately, animals are treated as property here and it's pretty much buyer beware.

I would start with the YTCA website, breeder referral section.
Yorkshire Terrier Dog Breeders- Yorkie Puppies

Get to know what ethical breeding practices consist of, as well as current recommendations for health testing and how long to keep puppies with their dams and litter mates.

Georgia has no laws regarding health guarantees, so you will find that the less than stellar breeders offer none to some worth less than the paper they are printed on.

Also, just because a breeder claims the dogs are AKC doesn't mean the dogs are healthy or good representatives of the breed.

Take your time and don't fall for the first cute face. Your caution and research ahead of time can save you much heartache in the future.
