Questions re: Spaying My baby is getting spayed Monday morning, and will also have three baby teeth pulled. I'm a little nervous, not about the procedure (my vet is excellent and I had him do surgery on Minnie before), but about the recovery. My girl Cookie loves to run and jump and it's going to be hard to keep her from getting insane cabin fever in that 10 days or so until her stitches come out. I mean she just loves to be outside, but I'm not sure I can chance taking her out except on a leash for peeing and pooping, because she runs like the wind and always jumps on the lawn furniture. Also, what do you guys recommend for feeding that first day or two after? I can't imagine she'll want to be crunching her kibble after having three baby teeth pulled. Would boiled chicken and rice be the way to go for a couple of days? Thanks! |
My boy had his kibble softened with wet food but chicken and rice is good, he did not to eat kibble for a few days. I had to keep him in a crate for the whole recovery because he wanted to play the night I brought him home. I kept a onsie on him and just took it off when we went outside on leash for pee/poop |
Our Bella was a little "baby"...she would not even walk. We set her down and she just hung her head with her tail between her legs. It was pitiful. This lasted for about 3 days.....so we did the only thing we could.........carried her, held her, hand fed her and even set her on her pee pad to do her business. On the 4th day, all was better and by day 6 she was back to normal.................so each is different......GOOD luck to your baby and you! |
Pain medicine normally keeps them a bit calm but you might need to get a play pen to keep her in. The jumping can really tear the stitches. Callie had some baby teeth pulled when she got spayed so I bought some wet food but she would not eat at all when she came home she just wanted to sleep. I would definitely take her out on a leash until she's healed or at least until the stitches come out. I also suggested a bath the night before they go in to be spayed because it will be awhile before you can bathe her. |
She'll be spending most of her time in my bedroom where there isn't anything to jump on, though I'm sure she'll try to stand on things. I'm worried if she's on pain meds it won't hurt her to try to jump, and she is quite athletic and energetic. |
Laddy is our jumper but after his neuter he didnt even try to jump the first few days. Kyra wanted to be held a lot and didn't do her usual daily zooming through the house. I turned a little pair of doggie pants backwards on her so she couldn't like the stitches. |
Galen is a crazy zoomie. I put down a potty pad for a couple days. He is a squatter. He had 17 teeth pulled. I gave him wet food for a couple days the mixed the wet food with part wet dry food. |
Of all the pets I have had spayed or neutered I have found them to be very good judges of what feels right and what doesn't. I have never had one be so physically active that they hurt themselves. Then tend to instinctively know what they are capable of doing. I have had a couple of dogs that were obsessed with their stitches and lick the incision until it became inflamed. Fortunately techniques seem to have improved a great deal over the years and that doesn't seem to be much of a problem either anymore. My advice is don't treat them much different than you always do. They heal very quickly and as long as you are watchful, they will be fine. |
Billi had canned food for 1 week after having 7 teeth pulled and a spay. Funny thing is, she was ready to go back to kibble after 4 days, but the vet wanted her to stay on canned. They're good about listening to their little bodies. They'll rest when they need to and play when they feel up to it, but not for long. Billi was back to normal by day 4, but other than her running/playing with Teeny, it's not hard to get her to slow down. If she got too carried away, either she'd stop herself, or we'd grab her and hold her for a few minutes so she'd calm herself. You're little one will be ok, and hope she recovers quickly! |

Jasmin was back to herself after 2 days, no teeth pulled though. Somehow all her baby teeth fell out on their own. Jasmin whined for 1.5 days from pain. We gave her pain meds from vet and carried her around. We wrapped her up in fleece blanket to keep her warm. We got a cone but only used it when are not home. She was good about not licking her cut. It has been a month now and she is completely heal. |

I would just get a onesie and make sure to keep an eye on her. You don't want her doing any jumping or running around the first couple of days. I am sure she will do great. My female was back to her regular self two days later. |
