New to yorkie talk Hello everyone I'm new here and a very proud owner of my very first yorkie. I could really use advice on which foods to feed him and anything else u would like to share with me. Thank u. Tabetha |
welcome to yt tabetha! congrats on your new bundle of love. what food is your yorkie eating now?? |
Thank u for the reply so quick. The breeder I got him from had him on purina one puppy food but idk if that's what I should leave him on or not. I want the best for him because I know they can have sensitive stomaches |
yeah honestly i would slowly transition him to a higher quality food. mine eat bil jac it was the only food i could get them to eat everyday and i still have to mix in veggies or soft food to mix it up as they get very bored. |
For the first few days keep him on the purina let him adjust to his new home, then slowly add the puppy kibble you like. My boys started on purina I hated it. They now eat blue buffalo freedom puppy. (Grain free) |
Our local pet store has blue buffalo. He really likes anything w chicken in it but I want it to be good quality. Thank u so much. |
Welcome to YT:) You will find everyone here passionate about YTer's and most willing to share their experiences. Recently I started my Bailey on BB and he really loves it. I love the fact that it doesn't have any corn filler and is a really good quality food. Have fun with your furrball:) What is his name?? Cheers! |
Hi Tabetha and welcome to YT! Would love to see some pics of your cute little guy. :) |
yeah i know bil jac does have corn meal as the third ingredient but after trying 300 foods...(not really that many) and they only ate one bite outta the bag. maybe i should try the blue buffalo again.... yes we love to see some pics.....!! |
I agree. I would start off about a week or two after your new pup settles. This will give you plenty of time to research. Beware it may be a trial and error situation. Honestly anything would probably be better than Purina. Then start using new food as treats. Then take the 1st step everyv2 tob3 days by taking old and putting in new. I would say about a tablespoon each time. It should take at least a week amd a half for the process. If diarrhea happens. Just get some canned all natural pumpkin and feed a half a spoonful of that. Dont give up and thanks for wanting the best for your new baby. Congrats! |
His name is Willie G |
Thanks so much everyone. U all r so nice |
Welcome to yt |
I love that name...willie g sounds like a rapper. |
Welcome to YT hun. Congrats on the new baby |
Welcome! You have come to the right place to help you with just about anything with you new pup!!!! |
Welcome!!! I also have my Yorkie and other pup on the Blue Buffalo Freedom (Grain Free). Start with the puppy for a year then they have ones made for small breed that my dogs love. Just make sure that when you first switch over you want to mix the old food and the new 50/50 to help with the transition so it doesn't upset their stomach. |

I hope that the transition will be better than I had with Bailey... he just took out the old food, kibble of course, and ate the new:) Smarty pants! He knows what's good for him.:aimeeyork All the best of luck! |
Thank u. Everyone here has recommended that food. I don't want to feed him anything that will hurt him. Thx so much. U all are so nice. |
Welcome to YT. It is best to let your puppy really settle in well before starting to change the food. They tend to be picky eaters anyway so you don't want to have him get off his feed and then not be able to get him eating again. Try to find the best quality food you can. Read ingredient lists. There can be a huge difference between brands. Just because they have cute pictures of your breed or any breed does not mean a thing about quality. Use your common sense. IF the ingredients look like nothing you would feed your dog yourself then you are probably right not to buy it. There is a lot of misinformation out there about pet foods right now. Try to find a non bias site to find good information to educate yourself about the brands and the industry it's self. |
