Impending Yorkie arrivial - leaving at home?
 
On July 30th our puppy Piper was born. She'll be 7-8lbs fully grown and has her tail intact. She came from a reputable breeder that I saw recommended here.

Quick question:

In the first few weeks there will be two days a week where nobody is home for about 3-4 hours. We plan on crate training Piper, but wanted to know what we should do for these periods. Any advice would be appreciated.

I guess I should add a second question.

We live in a one-bedroom condo and the living/dining/kitchen area is one large room. Should we put a puppy playpen in the room with her crate inside at the beginning?

Congratulations. I think the playpen and crate will work nicely.

I used an xpen with Teegy, it's got loads of room for all their business needs

I think best to keep her in a small area, easier to find her little presents later haha.

Just curious how did you get the breeder to leave the tail intact ? Any chance you can share the name of the breeder ? (or PM me if you prefer)
I'm slowly starting the process of getting a buddy for Charlie, and I'm trying to find a breeder that leaves their tails intact.
I'm in BC, but my brother lives in Cambridge..

CONGRATS!!!!!! I think the x-pen and small open crate would be the best idea for when she is left alone.

I think if you wait long enough, I'm sure tail docking will be a thing of the past everywhere.There are now many many vets who refuse to do it here and 95% of our breeders refuse to have it done to their pups now too.


As for the OP, a playpen works wonderfully :) It's easier to clean and your pup will have much more space to sleep, eat, potty and play.It's like their own little condo :D

Quite simple. I asked. She said she hated doing it anyway and is lobbying the AKC to eliminate this requirement. She breeds mostly show dogs, but bred two litters with some full tails to ensure we got what we needed.

For 3 or 4 hours I would say yes ! You can always set up a camera if you want to keep an eye on her :)

I think you're probably right, but until the CKC or AKC changes the standard, I don't think the reputable breeders will change their practices. They breed according to standard based on what I've learned so far ! I don't mind the little nub at all, but a tail is what they were born with, and for that reason alone I'd like my next buddy to have his or her tail :)

We asked the breeder to leave the tail intact. She is doing this more and more, and does not like docking at all.

Rigair Yorkshire Terriers CKC Reg. We breed only top quality yorkshire terriers
