Yorkie tricks Bailey has always been quick to learn. I believe this to be a Yorkie trait... of course:) So far we have taught him to: sit, lay down, stay, come, roll over, spin, dance, play dead and jump. For each of these tricks I have also used a hand motion, so that I don't even have to speak in order for him to do a particular trick. How about your Yorkie... what tricks have you taught him/her to perform? |
The tricks that Huey knows are the ones he has trained ME to perform. I throw the toy and he brings it partway and will then only advance a few inches at a time to see exactly how far from me he can drop it and still get a treat. The other trick he knows is to get something that he isn't supposed to have like a coin or a plastic wrapper or hair tie and then flaunts it in front of me so I will give him a treat to give it up. He then goes to find another forbidden object and repeats the process. Cunning little brat... |
Zoey also "stays and waits" when I open a door to go outside. Then "comes" when I invite her out. Really comes in handy when your in a hurry and you don't want them running out the door. Be sure you use hand signal, hand flat and up and point for stay...... I also needed to distract her from calling me to her with her potty bell , lol, so I bought a baby toy that straps to a cars seat, and strapped it to the bottom of a bar stool in my kitchen. I LOVE it.... There are 3 toys on it that spin and one that has a button in the middle you have to push and it plays music ....Didn't take long for her to learn that! And it's soooo funny!, I am writing this on pad , will go to computer and send a few pics, if I can find this thread again. |
ok ... they are all blurry cause she is really loves spinning them....then she turns around and looks at me as if to say..."Good enough??...Treat , treat??" Its amazing how smart they are....I started at Pet Smart classes when she was 10 weeks the basics and that really helped teach ME what to teach her. |
opp no attachment try again |
connection problems , 2 Attachment(s) sorry...try one more time, don't know what I'm doing wrong, I've sent attachments before and they took |
That is adorable! What a great idea! !!! I may have to do that:D |
more 4 Attachment(s) When loose leash walking in the yard she learns "drop it" and "leave it" with leaves she wants to eat and or EVERYTHING else she wants to taste( stones , nuts , twigs, bugs) with a tug , a command and a treat at first , now it's just the commands..she is just glad to be outdoors... Will "go get it" when I throw anything and bring it back.....outdoors she really likse an empty water bottle smashed so she can bite it, with a few rocks in it for weight to rattle and so it will toss better... It's different than indoor toys.... Try attaching an elastic band around a chair top or banister with a "grabby "toy on the end....let it hang just above their head ....Zoey goes crazy .....first thing she plays with in the morning and last thing at night... Any other ideas out there? She is always up for new stimulation... Arent they fun?!! |
Huey's smart:) Quote:

Gina has been through puppy class, and learned sit,and sit stay, down, bow, drop it , leave it. We are now in the advanced class, new ones ore park it and off, sit stay with a longer duration, heel stick targeting, today we started on wait, and park it using the heel stick as a pointer so she knows where we want her to go. Fetch was the very first trick she did, and she did that on her own, I threw a ball, she fetched it and brought it back to my hand all on her own. She's very smart and loves the training and attention, any time she starts to get bored/destructive, I just bring out the clicker and treats, and she goes though whatever routine I have her do. Cheers Quad:aimeeyork |
Callie can pick up a trick in less then 15 minutes. Right now she know sit, stay, down, beg, roll over, jump through the hoop, spin, leave it, shake with both front paws, and high five with both front paws, go to bed, and then she knows a lots of commands to keep her out of trouble like leave it, no, don't go off the carpet and others. I think Yorkies are very smart! This is what Callie did for a talent show http://youtu.be/UpBHn3VT4aE |
I love trick training! Yorkies are sooo smart, and it's so much fun to teach them stuff and see that lightbulb moment go off. Jackson is one of the smartest dogs I've ever had, sometimes that can not be a good thing! LOL... but he's a lot of fun to work with. Here's an older montage of his tricks... I need to make a new one And a newer trick, backwards circles around my legs: |
vidio clips ! Soo cute you guys! Love em! very smart babies.... Do you attach them the same way as pictures? |
Priscilla really doesn't know any tricks :/ She catches on to things kind of slowly sometimes. |

I just remembered another trick that I taught Bailey, or perhaps he taught me:) Whenever I am on the phone he brings a ball to me and when it is too far for my foot to reach, I say 'closer' and he either pushes it with his nose or flips it closer to me (which doesn't always work well, but he keeps on trying until it does). As well, I have taught him to 'go backwards':) |

Zoey is 5 months and weighs 2.04 lbs! A true joy! I told my hubby every time I hold her it's like Christmas. One day I was cleaning up her pen area and he smiles and says "Still feel like Christmas?" I smiled back and said yeeeeeesssss 😉 |

Tibbe loves his training and does come, sit, stand, lie down, play dead, roll-back-stay(roll over on back and lie there), stay/wait, growl and bark and quiet on command plus whine on command, high fives each foot, shake paws each foot, wave with left paw, rollover once or multiple times in a row, jump over a stick or through hoop once or many times in a row, crate-up on command, lie down/relax(lies down with head between paws), stay in your yard(he's not left his front yard in 5 years off leash); paws up(stand up and place paw where I touch); watch me; bite or kiss my finger on command; leave it; take it and last but not least - sit up and beg! Cutest of all. He kind of leans to the left side when he does this for some reason and he was so wobbly, it took months to build up the muscles to allow him to sit up and stay and hold it. FINALLY he got there. Then he added the crossed-paw up-and-down begging that he does at times when sitting up. It's adorable and I'm tempted to leave him the house and 401k in the will every time I see him sit up and beg with his crossed-paws going up and down. We were working on play bow but he acted as if that bothered his shoulder so we stopped that. Tibbe loves training more than eating or going outside or anything. He is always working to get me to train him whether it's time or not! He's a bully about it sometimes and so growly to get me involved he'll start rolling over and sitting up and begging all on his own to show me how cute he can be and don't I want to start training so I can see all that cuteness. And I do so we train and he does all his tricks and gets his treats and praise and he loves all the adoration and things I tell him about how smart he is. He is a big ham and loves all the attention his tricks bring him and he loves letting me know he understands what I want him to do. That's really big for him to let me know he's knows what I want. And then my job is to let him know how very, very smart and clever he is and make over him. I'll get barked at if I don't do my part and come up with the treats and enough praise so I have to work hard to measure up! I've said many times - Tibbe would sell his little soul to get attention and praise and to be the center of attention. |
Love all the tricks!!! I was doing fairly well with Bevo until we added 3 more all within 6 months of each other. The boys can sit, stay, lie down, fetch, and be quiet. Jaxon learned to roll over very quickly and will roll continuously anytime he wants something! Bryleigh who is a little over 2 years, has finally learned to sit. She just doesn't "get" training. We laugh because she is such a tiny baby (2.4 pounds) that her brain just isn't big enough to absorb commands! |
In addition to the basic commands, Liberty has perfected the following tricks: twirl (turn 360 degrees on hind legs), "find" the cell phone (really helpful), give kisses (jose to nose), slap me four (instead of five), ....., and my favorite [drum roll here]: ********Patty cake to the song all the way up to the phrase ending in "for baby and me"*********!!! Most of the time he will alternate paws when I do, but not consistently yet. |

I love reading about all of y'all's dogs and their tricks. They are all so smart (and cute). I've been looking for new ones to teach Kiko. She knows sit, stand, down, over, play dead, bow, sit up, stand up (on 2 legs), high five, give me your paw, give me the other one, speak, spin, get your toy, bring it, give it to me, drop it, leave it, wait/go, off, and does a good sit stay with minor distractions and is getting pretty good at coming when called. She also understands some words and phrases and gestures like want to go for a walk or just walk she even recognizes W, wanna carrot or just carrot, ready for bed?, go to bed, and if I point and tell her to go she will walk in the direction I point. She also knows hurry up means go potty. |
Awwwww.....great new ideas for me to work on! They love learning and all the love and attention. ( and treats) Now does anyone have a "trick" for piddling when "meet and greeting"? :) That's what I'm working on now...kinda tricky to say noooo when she is happy to see you! |

Wow these are some smart Yorkies! Elena has mastered sit, down, stay, come, shake, spin, stand up, and jump but she really does not like to roll over! I have to put my hand on her back or she will stand up when I do the motion and say roll over.. My other Yorkie Strawberry used to be able to catch a treat in her mouth and do lots of tricks but she is 16 so she can't hear or see very well anymore. |
