So many Yorkies being bred in Puppy Mills
 

It breaks my heart to see so many Yorkies being rescued when they bust a Puppy Mill. I am wondering what members of Yorkie Talk think about this....and have members of Yorkie talk committed to not buying their Yorkies from Pet Stores and Backyard Breeders. There are so many unwanted dogs in this world....and now it appears there are very many unwanted Yorkies. If we don't care about them....Who will? We have to stop breeding so many! Please share your thoughts.

There are way too many homeless dogs in shelters dying everyday.:( Just say NO to back yard breeders & Boycott pet shops that sells puppies. DO NOT buy a puppy from the internet! It's brokers/ re-sellers /puppy millers hiding behind the internet!

Thank you. I just don't know alot about YorkieTalk....and I don't want to belong to a group that supports Breeders. Yorkies are a very popular dog and sell for lots of money.....and it is so horrible that this now seems to be the dog of choice for Puppy Mills. If you check out Dog Auctions on YouTube....you will also see it s a growing industry. Just breaks my heart to see all those Yorkies in dirty little cages. If we are true Dog Lovers and care about them like we seem to...we have to help put an end to Puppy Mills.:(

Yorkietalk is a forum for all, there are rules set forth in the "stickies" at the top of this forum. I think generally, YTers comprise a vast group of people. I know that amongst us we have Reputable breeders, unethical breeders, we have activists and pascifists! We comprise every aspect of the Yorkie World.

In fairness to the ethical breeders out there I would tell you that the majority of us, not ALL, but the majority of us support ethical breeders who are breeding to improve the breed and we, as a whole do not swing so far right that we think no one should breed.

There are some great breeders here and some totally unscrupulous breeders who know damn well they are breeding to make money off the backs of their poorly bred dogs. They are breeding mutts and unproven pups and selling them for outrageous prices. While I wish YT didn't comprise of "those" we unfortunately have to accept that admin has a right to make this a forum available to all who adhere to the rules.

If you are asking if we are all against breeders period???? ABSOLUTELY not, quite contrare.

If you look around a bit here on YT you will see many, many, many threads that reflect the various schools of thought and the passion for we all feel for the the pups.

So in a nutshell, if you want to hang around here you definitely will have to grow a thick skin and be open to various opinions and schools of thought and be a member in good standing!!

Dog auctions have been going on for many decades (sadly) but have decreased and actually have disappeared in many states due to laws and internet sales. easy access.via petfinder,petstores etc....etc...etc...Much work still needs to be done; however, in stopping this horrid business of auctioning dogs.

Yes you are right much work needs to be done with puppymills, auctions, unethical breeding...byb's petstores, brokers, craigslist, ebay etc...we all have to keep up the fight and do our part.

Hi and welcome to Yorkietalk! While many are aware of puppy mills, many still aren't that aware and believe that all commercial breeders are puppy mills. To me, a puppy mill is a place where the dogs are kept in inhumane conditions, whether it's a filthy backyard breeder who doesn't get proper vet care, or a large commercial concern that keeps the dogs crammed in rusty crates piled up on top of each other with urine and feces dropping to the bottom crates. One thing many don't know is that dogs sold to pet stores have to have kennels licensed and therefore they have to have inspections. So at least these dogs have minimum care standards. However, dogs sold directly over the internet haven't needed to be licensed and while this is changing, it may take a few years before these dogs are protected. That why I always recommend people visit the breeder in person. Have a relationship with you breeder and get to know her, good breeders are happy to meet you and place their dogs in the best homes possible.

Well I checked out the list of dogs most often found in Puppy Mills and Yorkshire Terriers are 5th. And they are the first small dog. I have seen the bust of 4 horrible puppy Mills in the last couple months...Quebec, Kentucky, Southern Ontario.....and there were many Yorkies. Plus almost 90 small Dogs....lotsa Yorkies....dumped outside a shelter in Vancouver. They seem to suffer even a bit more than some of the other little guys because they are so matted. These Yorkies all need homes. Yorkies are very popular....and we know why! But this popularity is causing them great grief. As Yorkie Lovers....we have to do more. We can't bury our heads and ignore it!

I agree with you, it's a real curse to be a popular dog, so many breeders breed just for the money and don't even like the breed. Also, Yorkies aren't really an outdoor dog like some, and really do crave human companionship. Like you mention, if their grooming needs aren't meant, it can really be torturous for them, I've seen some really bad pictures of dogs who can't even walk because their hair is so matted.

Here in lies the devil in the details.....you say you are against "BREEDERS". What a horrible shame that is....fine, be against puppy mill breeders, flea markets, pet stores, and BYB's .....but you have to realize there are hundreds and hundreeds of breeders, responsible, ethical, accountable, hard working, committed breeders that have spent years and years, studying pedigrees and lines so that all the people that want a purebred Yorkie that LOOKS like a Yorkie is supposed to look like, with the traits and characteristics and personalities of our beloved breed, can have the pleasure of owning one. YT supports these breeders, so if you really mean you do not want to "belong to a group that supports BREEDERS", you need to keep looking! We have rescues and people that support and volunteer and devote their lives to their rescues and the pups that end up there ....we have BREEDERS, that have devoted their lives to breeding these pups with all the love and care and knowledge and wonderful intentions and results that could possibly be expected and appreciated. and yes, we have BYB's , which we DO NOT SUPPORT OR ENCOURAGE, but they are in our midst, and we do everything we can do to educate and redirect them and their misconceptions about throwing two dogs together for "the wonderufl feeling of welcoming a wonderful little litter in the world", for a quick buck, so the kids can see a natural birth, and all the "slip ups", "oops" and accidental breedings when people that do not know any better, put two intact dogs, one in heat, together and are then stupefied when they end up with a pregnant female.....you are doing a MAJOR injustice to all the commited, educated, responsible breeders when you say you are against "all breeders"..... Be against puppy mills and byb's, but dont paint all breeders with the same brush.....

Well if people like us aren't going to wake up and help all the little Yorkies in Puppy Mills.....Who is? By making this breed of little dog so popular we have inadvertently brought many if them to Hell on earth. Yep....I know you have the right to enjoy them....I know you love your hobby....I know you have the right to be a responsible Breeder and earn your living that way. But 'unwanted' dogs is at a Crisis point.....and if we don't wake up and stop breeding til we can take care of the dogs we have.....Who will?

Puppy mills are NOT MY fault, and you will not put that blame on ME!!!!....nor any responsible ethical breeder's fault. ALL MY BABIES ARE WANTED AND WELL CARED FOR, not only by myself, but by the new owners that I screen so diligently.!! I am no more responsible for unwanted dogs than YOU are for all the unwanted abused children over populating this earth. My breeding business is no more a "hobby" than people having children would be considered a hobby. If someone told you your children were a nice diversion, and you had the right to procreate but you were contributing to overpopulation of the world, and you needed to consider all the poor unwanted, unloved, abused children out there rather than have your own, what would you say? I can tell you, you would say EXACTLY what I am telling you....you can NOT force your views against breeders, ALL BREEDERS, on other people, so stop trying that ploy...you would tell me t go take a flying leap off a short dock....so what YOU need to do, is concentrate NOT on breeders, but on the source of the problem of all the unwanted, abused dogs in the world, and join the fight against puppy mills and byb's,, become politically active in methods devised to get rid of puppy mills, as many of us already are....not ethical, responsible breeders that are doing NOTHING BUT GOOD for this breed. I am curious....are you a card carrying member of PETA??? And please do NOT include ME in "people like us" group....I am nothing like you.

I will not buy from pet stores that sell puppies or bad breeders. I also try to speak out against both as often as possible.

There is nothing wrong with good breeders who better the breed. Some people can not take on a rescue because they don\'t have the money, the time, the experience or just simply don\'t want to and the best place for them to get a yorkie is from a good breeder.
