Do floppy ears mean anything bad? 1 Attachment(s) I'm sorry to be posting so much, but I am just very excited with the thought of soon having my own baby here with me! I have found a breeder that is merely a hobby breeder and I really like her. Her dogs produce the cutest puppies (in my opinion), and I am in love with them! However, they have the floppy ears. Like mostly all of them. My mom said it has to do with not having their ears shaved, but I want to make sure it doesn't mean any deep issues. I realize it is considered a "flaw" as floppy ears are not standard, but I actually think the floppy ear is extremely cute and as this is merely a pet, not a show dog, it doesn't bother me one bit. I just want to be sure that it doesn't mean any underlying issues!! Thank you |
Floppy ears doesn't relate to any health issues. Or at least I haven't heard otherwise. :) Have you seen their parents? What your mom said is partially true. Shaving the top of the ears help with lessening the weight so it helps their ears get perky. Also, being puppies, a lot of the calcium in their body is probably focusing on going towards their teeth rather than their ears. I think floppy ears are just adorable! |
1 Attachment(s) I don't think it's anything Bad to have floppy ears.. Some Yorkies ears just don't stand for whatever reason. I love the standing ears , I think they look adorable . But my Oscar's ears never went up and that is fine because he is gorgeous ..:D See .... .Attachment 392215 |

The floppy ears don't bother me, I agree with you, they can be cute, but the breeder who doesn't do the necessary grooming so that the ears will stand does bother me. She probably doesn't do any genetic testing and at the very least doesn't study the line so that she knows if the offspring will be healthy. Good breeders breed to standard and even "hobby breeders" should do this. In my opinion, there's a difference between a hobby breeder and a back yard breeder. From the picture, it looks like the snout will be rather long, and the coat looks cottony to me rather than silk. Cotton coats can look really cute, but there is a reason for silky coats they are so easy to groom and you can grow a long coat if you like without it tangling. I have one who has a silky coat and one who has a mixed cotton coat and the difference in grooming time is amazing. I personally believe in supporting hobby breeders who are doing right by the breed and you should find the best breeder you can, their dogs need good homes too. |
When I rescued Gizmo at 9 wks, his ears were all the way down like that. I have been adding a little yo baby yogurt, and also adding cottage cheese, kind of alternating between the 2 , mixed with his kibble and jis ears are coming up. The right ear is up completely most of the time, and the left one is about alf way up. Adding yogurt or cottage cheese will give him extra calcium to help them stand up. |
morgan's right ear is up all the time and his left ear goes up and down |

I can't tell whether to go with this breeder or not but if this is pup you want you could ask the breeder to tape up the ears. I think most breeders do it .. When I got Oscar at 11 weeks his ears were down but I told his breeder that was fine . I kinda liked his cute little floppy ears.. |
Be careful with a hobby breeder. They probably don't do genetic testing or know the lines of there breeding dogs which means if a dog in there lines had a genetic disease or illness your puppy could end up with that and cost you a whole lot of money and an lot of heartache. |
This looks like a pretty young pup. I think most pups ears are like this at first. Roxy's ears were flopped down like this until like she was 4-6 mo old. First one ear popped up on it's own. A week or two later the other ear popped up. I didn't tape them or anything cuz i hadn't learned about that yet. They came up all on their own. I say don't worry about it. Your pup is too young to be that concerned. You may be surprised. You can tape or not, it's up to you. Enjoy your little cutie! |

Thank you so much. I do love him.. |
Zach had stand up ears when we got him but after a few months they flopped down. |
Abbi's ears haven't come up either. I don't care - I think floppy ears are adorable. |
I personally was really picking when I was looking for "Peanut". I had my vision of what I wanted my Yorkie to look like.. in that vision was ears that stood up! I just love the look of the round eyes, short little muzzle, button nose and ears up! |
