Can you help me with hairstyle pic? 1 Attachment(s) So Alfie is finally booked in for his allergy testing and needs to get shaved up one side. Many of you will know that he had lost almost all of his hair on his back end with allergies and so we have been trying and trying to grow him out and he has never been cut at all. He does not have good quality coat on his body but his head and face are fine. There is a groomer right next door to our vet and we thought it might be an idea to get him groomed after his testing as he will still be a little groggy from the anaesthetic, just a cut not a bath and all the trimmings. So firstly would that be a good idea or not? Secondly, I want to get his body shaved to match where his testing will be but absolutely keep his face long and probably the hair on his lower legs. This is the sort of cut I want but with longer face, does anybody have any other pics of this type of cut for me to bring to the groomers? Attachment 391677 |
Alfie now 1 Attachment(s) |
:) Oh Tracey....I don't know, I'm a bit rubbish so can't answer your questions..... All I DO KNOW is how absolutely, amazingly wonderful your little Alfie looks now - you've done him proud, and he's very, very lucky to have you as his mummy :) Hope all goes well! :D Sally + Harry x |
Thanks Sally, I think he is the cutest even if he doesn't have a thick coat, hoping there are some things the testing will help us to eliminate, or if it is dust mites that I can start letting him have food treats as all he gets now is his prescription food and a few green beans. He has a hot spot under his neck right now and we don't know what caused it. Testing is on 2nd October so will update on how it goes. |
I love that haircut, some call it the modified Schnauzer, but many YT members nicknamed it "The Joey" after Nancy1999's Joey. I have all 4 of my pups (Yorkie & Morkies) in this cut and think it looks great and is so easy to maintain. Here is a thread with more photos http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/my-...ut-shaved.html Alfie is adorable and will look even better with this cut. Good luck. |
I would get him groomed a few days before the allergy test. I assume dog allergy testing is the same as people allergy testing. If so he's going to have at least 1 hive. It's too much for one day and I wouldn't want to risk his skin getting more irritated. |

Thanks Nancy and Sandy for the pics, didn't think of leaving his chest hair but I like that look too. I will print these off for the groomer. I will cal the vet derm tomorrow to ask if it would be ok to get him groomed right after testing. Thanks again, I just love this cut. |
Here is a link with some pictures of different styles. Yorkshire Terrier Grooming at Roxie Delux in Birmingham My Maddie has the cotton coat and I keep her very short on her body, but leave the legs, tail and face long. It's really easy to care for. Good luck with the allergy testing! |

Alfie is such a sweetheart! If you trim around his paws & tip his ears, he'll look tidy & spiffy. Just doing that will make a big difference. IDK how the weather is over there, but I reckon it gets very cold? He'll probably wear clothing, but I'd leave his body hair alone. You can just have them scissor it along w/his legs to even it out. Putting a clipper over his very thin hair might make him look shaved. So you'll want to ask for a #4 blade cut or even longer. Also bc his leg hairs are so sparse right now, it won't look like the Joey cut. I'm just being honest & want you to 'see' the outcome of the cut you are envisioning for him. I'm sure he will grow a fuller coat since you've got his allergies in check:thumbup: & he will have lovely full hair on him soon. |

Thanks Jenny, I know he won't get the full Joey effect cos of his thin coat, I was thinking of shaving almost to his ankle and trimming his paws so the will sort of look like little boots? It does get pretty cold here but Alfie is always quite hot (we think because of his allergies) we live right beside a park and take him there every day where he would run until he fell asleep standing up if we let him. Cold definitely doesn't seem to bother him. His new winter coats are on the way, I adore this one and the little munchkin wearing it. We have had a mild summer and think winter will be pretty mild too. Puppy Angel Waterproof Padded Dog Vest in White | Pettecoats In your experience does shaving have any benefits for better regrowth? Thanks again everybody for your help. |

From my personal experience, once I shaved off their hair w/a clipper, it never grew back the same. Their hair grew in thicker, so it might actually be better for Alphie. The hair growth is different for every pup...Mimi's hair takes 4ever to grow, it's silky. While Momo is a puff ball in a month lolll. |
How old is Alfie? Tiki had very thin silky hair for the first year or two, and I was worried that she wouldn't have enough fluff on the legs to look good in a Joey, plus she was really long and thin. I was thrilled that her hair thickened up, and she filled out a little, after about 2 years, and I will never have her hair any other way. It's great. Too bad I haven't taken & posted pictures in a looonnng time.:) |
1 Attachment(s) I love the "Joey" cut. Dooney had this for the summer. |
Hi, just wanted to wish you and Alfie the best of luck at his allergy testing appointment. I know it's not for another while but when it does come around I hope it all goes well :) |

I will take your advice on board and discuss with the groomer, he is booked in for the week before the testing. I think they are supposed to be pretty good, I will have to take his own shampoo for them to use and tell them not to use a dryer, we always let him air dry only takes about 3 minutes cos of his coat. |

Maintenance is a breeze. My Yorkie and 2 of my Morkies who all had thin silky hair as pups, have grown much nicer coats around 2 years old, and after having this cut. (My other Morkie is cottony and this cut works great for her, as I used to have to brush her twice a day) I go extra short on the shaved parts, with an Oster #10 blade, after finding the #7F to leave them a little choppy. Others may vary. |
