How can I get them to take a pill? Daisy and Teddy are on hamburger and rice because of runny stools. I guess this medication Metronidazole is bitter because they won't eat their hamburger if I crumble this pill on it. I hate to shove a pill down their throat and watch them try to force it back up. Is there any way to get them to take this pill if it is hidden inside of something? It has to be something that won't upset their system. Any ideas? Thanks. |

I just tried to give Daisy one of these pills and she fought me so hard I thought she was going to bite me. My DH said she did the same thing to him earlier. I'm wondering if I should just skip giving her this pill rather than go through this. |
I usually stick a pill inside a dab of peanut butter and let them lick it off my finger. It's so sticky they don't know a pill is in it. Cottage cheese is good too. |

I'd cook a plain hamburger or meatballs to stick the pills in. |

Yes try the cheese. Anything they think is delicious should work. |
I get Natural Balance Lamb roll and slice off a small piece and hide it in there. It usually works well! My vet once told me it is a very horrid tasting drug. Good luck! |

My poodle took pills her entire life and she was a pro at eating around them, a few times she even spit it out in other rooms. We'd use cheese, liverwurst, lunch meat, regular meat, and wet dog food. Basically whatever we had in the fridge. Stuff like PB and cream cheese didn't work because she'd lick around it. She'd usually get her morning pill in cheese and her night pill in wet food, but some days we'd run out or she just would't eat it. In general it's best to use the smallest bit possible to get the pill down and then another piece to wash it down. |
Thanks for all the great ideas. The cheese worked like a charm. They both inhaled the cheese and didn't detect the pill. It's a spreadable cheddar cheese and probably not great for their stomaches but it worked. I might try the meatball tomorrow and I usually have some of the lamb roll around but I don't right now. They are also getting a big brown pill called Endosorb, that I am crumbling on their food and they seem to like it. They are also getting a chewable probiotic called Prostora that they like. It's just that little white one they won't take. I have not seen either of them poop today so I hope they aren't constipated now. |
hotdogs can work too - although the pill pockets are fantastic. I had a dog that would eat the treat and spit out the pill too (my first yorkie) :D |

I roll them up in a small ball of cream cheese. First I give them one without the pill, then the one with, then another without. They never notice the pills lol. Just don't say the word pill around them, I swear mine understand that word and will spit it out if I say it lol. |
YEP, hiding it in cheese works like a charm. |
Brandi takes the Metronidazole as well and what I found is that she will swallow the pill with some type of food that she doesn't have to bite down on. As soon as the capsule is broken, she will spit it out. Peanut butter (or something like it) works great because she doesn't have to chew it, she can just swallow it. If you keep that in mind, they will take their pills everyday without spitting it out. |
I use pill pockets |

HA, not for My Adult Male Sneakers ! I can "pocket" a Pill in Cheese, he'll take it and seem to swallow it, BUT... he'll slip the pill out of the Cheese, hold it in his cheek for a little bit, knowing I'm looking to see it he swallowed it, THEN... Spit it out when he thinks I'm not looking  |

I ground them down and sprinkled on the food |
Our last yorkie would smell out a pill from anything we tried - turkey, peanut butter, cheese - everything we tried. We finally resorted to grinding the pill to a powder, dissolving it in a small amount of water and injecting it into her mouth with a syring. It bit of an effort, but it worked. |

Mine were too clever in sorting the yummy from the pill. I just put the pill in the side of the jaw and give it a push and follow up with something yummy. |
I usually "hide" it in whatever I have available. I think the best for me was wet food. I'd stick the pill in a small amount of wet food and make a tiny "meatball" out of it. They think it's a treat and pretty much inhale. LOL |
Daisy just heard the pills rattle against the container when I picked it up and took off like a bat out of you-know-where. Lol The cheese is working for now. Thanks for all the great ideas. I may be trying some of them soon. |
With Minnie I always put pills inside of pieces of hot dogs. It was the only way I could get her to take any of her medicine other than Heartguard (which of course she loved since it's just a drop of medicine on a big beef treat). |

Maybe you can pre-ready the pills. Make little cheese-pill balls and leave it in the fridge. That way, Daisy won't think twice about taking it. :D |
