what would you do? Genius Barney has learned to escape the playpen during the day while DH and I are at work. I stood behind the door one day and watched him. He does it as soon as we leave the living room. He climbs out using the little plastic bars on the side. He's been doing this for about a week now. SO FAR, we have not found any accidents in the house. He only has access to hard wood and tile. As soon as we get in, we let all of them out and he goes a lot. So it appears he's holding it in during the day. I'm not sure what to do with him. We are gone for about 7.5-8 hours depending upon the day. The other dogs stay in the pen just fine, but they are both older and seem to enjoy the nap. Do you think that letting him out is too much freedom for an 8, almost 9 month old? To me, he's still a puppy. Also, I think it's a little unfair to let him have free roam when Anna is in the play pen. Should I just give up and not even put him in the pen? He isn't even staying there for 5 minutes. Grrrr. One more purchase gone down the drain. |
As long as he can't hurt himself, I'd probably leave him out. Could he get hurt while climbing out of the pen? I'm sure more experienced members have better advice. |

Have you thought about maybe setting up a cam to see what he does after he gets out? How about you put a big bed sheet over the pen? |

I think he's plenty old enough to be left out of the pen as long as he only has access to permittable areas :) |

Thanks for the opinions. A lot of times things will be brought up on here that I have never even thought of. |
How funny. My male climbs out of pens too... I started containing them both in a large bathroom that we have upstairs and I have had no issue with my escape artist :) |
I have a top paw 24x24" 8 panel playpen that her crate attaches to, Gina can't climb that, although soon she will be able to get on top of her crate. We are getting a bigger crate to leave attached to the playpen though. Cheers Quad:aimeeyork |
Gizmo is scared to death of the vacuum cleaner and the other day, he almost made it over the side of the playpen. Scared me too death and I figure its only a matter of time even though he is only 3 months old and a mere 2lb 4ozs, but I was worried enough to get a better playpen :-) This is the one I bought ![]() |
When I first got my girl at twelve weeks she did the same thing. I was so afraid she would get hurt. I finally let her be free. Lucky you have hardwood floors. I have carpet. I didn't want to crate her because she came from a puppy mill. I felt she's been lo locked up enough. Well, with many accidents, and lots of carpet scrubbing she's been a free bird since then. I heard I could have turned the playpen upside down, but never thought of it. Oh well that's life! Good luck k! |
Laddy is my escape artist. He could scale a 3ft tall xpen at 5 months. We also put them in the bathroom if going to be gone longer than a couple of hours. |
This is what I would do, let them all hang out in the living area & leave some pee pads in a designated area so they can go if they need to. There was a yorkie on YT that got his leg caught on a ex-pen while trying to climb out...accidents do happen. Nobody was home & he was dangling there for some time, luckily he wasn't too badly hurt. |

I appreciate everybody's thoughts. I honestly had never considered his legs getting caught. I will probably look into the pen with a top if we find pee. Our bathroom is not very big and I worry that he would cry all day because it is isolated from the rest of the house. |
1 Attachment(s) we used the richell pen. It goes up to 5 feet long and has a top. Worked great for Jess |
I really like that pen |
Jackson is an escape artist also. So when I take him and Bella out to play in the pen, I have to keep an eye on him or go get him. I have considered using a tarp with bungees, cause I'm thinking he would try to climb in between the tarp and pen. They are such little stinkers, or little farts and big stinkers. |

Again, I just think 8 months or 9 months old is plenty old enough not to have to be penned. If you trust him to use his pee pad or wait to go out and he's not in an area he could mess up (carpet or something you worry about like that)...I'd just leave him out. |

My mom's Yorkie-poo is an escape artist too. She has figured out how to use her paw to rattle her kennel latches and open the doors. So now my mom has to put the door side towards the wall which has stopped it. You must love how smart they are! |

We have been lucky so far. Barney is not a destructive chewer. Our first yorkie, Charlie did not grow out of that until he was around 2. We buy Barney circle bully rings. They seem to satisfy that need to chew. |

can you post the video so we can have a wee giggle, I'd just leave him out. My boys have access to my entire apartment except the bedroom when I'm at work, they pretty much wrestle and sleep |
I would be afraid of leaving Gizmo alone, as we have open stairs going to our second story. That's why unless I can watch him at all times , he's in his pen, which is not much, except at night. He's still just a baby though at 3 months old :-) |
my home is just too big to let jess roam when we are not home. I also have four kids who leave things everywhere. So the Richell pen worked great for the first 6 months. She now stays in the mud room in a playpen when we are gone. Plenty of room to move around two beds (one open, one in a crate) food water and pee pad. She is much happier now (she was in the richell for 8 weeks when she broke her leg so she is kind of over it so we just use it as a pee area. I think Im going to sell it if anyone in the VA beach area is looking for one. |
