Clothes--for fashion or function? This may be a silly question, but I was wondering if clothes for Yorkies serve a functional purpose, or are they just a fashion statement? I have always assumed that they are just adorable accessories, (and wondered how you get your precious puppy to wear them without protest!), but now that the weather is getting cooler I am thinking that I want to cover my baby when we go out for a walk! Am I just being over-protective? Do Yorkies get chilled in cooler weather? Does their "natural" coat make them more susceptible to the cold than dogs that have thicker coats and undercoats? My Mia shakes from fear when I take her on a walk (trying to get her used to the big bad world!), so I wouldn't know if she is actually shivering from the cold, or not. Of course, I'd love an excuse to splash out on some cute little outfits for my girl.;) How do you get them used to wearing clothes? |
I have never put my yorkies in clothes.Not because I don´t think they look adorable, but because it doesnt really get freezing cold here (Spain). Here, it would just be for "fashion" and totally not functional.I was given a couple of T´s from a german woman a little while back, but Milo and Bella wanted nothing to do with them. Infact, after putting Milo in his little blue shirt and taking a picture, he managed to get out of it and then pee on it lol. Now, if I lived somewhere with really cold winters with snow and all, then yes, I´d think they needed to be covered outside, and I´d also have a carrier for extra warmness incase we stopped somewhere etc. Yorkies dont have double coats so yes, they do feel the cold easier.As for getting them used to wearing clothes, I have no idea, but as with anything else, I´m guessing you just have to start them off really young and put them in clothes every day for a short period of time so that they get used to wearing them.I´m not sure. |
I asked myself the same question :) it's too hot where I live (Texas) right now for Rasta to wear clothing comfortably, but when the temp starts dropping to the 60's I'll put little sweaters/jackets on him to keep him warm(yorkies dont have an undercoat to keep them warm). Now as for the hairbows and neck ties I put on him...they have no "real" function I just think they're really cute :D |

Rocco never liked clothes at all, until I found a certain cut/fit of thin sweater that he will wear when it's really cold in the winter. He will only wear a certain material, no sleeves,hoods, etc, and it has to fit a certain way otherwise he has nothing to do with it. :D Funny thing is not only does it keep him warm, he completely turns into a couch potato when I put it on. I think it functions similar to a thunder shirt and gives him some security. |

I can get Billi to wear clothes, but since it's been so warm here, I've been skipping them for the most part. Once it gets cooler tho, I'll toss some on her- it's not too cold in our house, I just want to dress her up without making her hot! LOL :D Outdoors, yes she'll have stuff on. Our winters can get really cold, surprisingly. The first few minutes I've got something on her, she seems annoyed, but she forgets about it quickly & goes about her business. I think she's gotten used to the feeling now. If only I could get her to keep her topknot in without scratching it out! :rolleyes: |
It's a little bit of both for my boys!! My little guy gets cold quickly. It got down to the 60's over labor day weekend and he was shivering. In the winter, they definitely get cold and I can't put on enough clothes to keep them warm to go outside for anything more than a quick potty. I am actually thinking of buying a snowsuit I found online for both of the boys, in hopes that we may be able to continue our walks. |

I rarely dress them unless it serves a purpose. During winter, it can get really cold here and we usually walk at nights which makes it worse. Any other season, I do have thin tshirts but I rarely dress them unless I'm in some weird mood. :p |

Welcome to YT! For us, it started as a functional thing since Tuffy used to travel with my husband & I (semi trucking doggie!) so in the cooler climates he'd wear clothes. In snowy climates we'd layer his clothing when needed to. When Bella came along she was just too cute NOT to dress up. :) These days, the dogs & I are in Florida where it's too durn hot for clothes most of the time. We'll be moving to Indiana soon though so that we can see Dad more than a week every 3-4 months. As for how to get them used to clothing, be sure to start with something lightweight but well fitted. Not too loose, not too tight. Be sure your pup can move freely, especially around the shoulder/top of leg area. If you have a boy you may need to shorten certain things so he doesn't dirty it when he pees., |
For Alfie it is functional, pyjamas to stop him scratching with allergies and a sweater and/or coat for walks in our rainy, chilly winters. |
I say both functional and fashion. I love to dress my girls! Teeka and Tatiana have a dresser and closet with lots of clothes. Of course on hot days, they go without! Teeka is on the slim side and needs clothes for warmth with cooler or cold temps. Max is a chunk and usually goes without. Tatiana almost always has a dress, t-shirt, sweatshirt or coat for fashion & function. She seems to get cold easily and will shiver. Tatiana doesn't mind wearing clothes....Teeka will pout and Max doesn't care either way. |

My boys don't have a lot of clothes, but I enjoy dressing them up. I'm surprised that they like it. They act like it is their duty, and they get excited when I bring home new things for them. For Izzy I started off young. She is 10 months old now and she loves clothes. She hates bows or anything in her hair and takes them out but she loves any clothes :D. I think you just need to put it on and distract them at first then they totally forget about it! |

Galen was not a fan of clothes. And I really did not have that much. Just a silly bunny outfit he so was not a fan. But I think know that he is shaved, he does not give me a problem. I think he is realizing that it is keeping his skinny butt warm. :D |
Because Yorkies have a single hair and not a double like most dogs, clothing can be functional. Joey's breeder said that when you need a sweater, so do they. It's very warm here, but with AC's it can get cool for them even in the summertime. In the winter, they definitely need a hoodie or sweater. |

Laddy will come to me everyday waiting for a shirt or sweater. He has skin issues so thinner hair and gets chilled even on warm days. Kyra gives me the stink eye and pouts for 10 minutes every time I dress her so she goes without most of the time. When we go for walks or out she doesn't bat an eye at putting on a pretty harness dress lol. Funny little things they are. |

Max is beautiful & I love that sweater! Lexie never got dressed up before i had her, but she was always so easy. She quickly figure out getting dressed meant Mama's gonna take her somewhere = fun! Like me (and unlike many yorkies), she is ALWAYS HOT!!! Good thing we are in CO, or i'd never be able to dress her up. I have a bunch of cute harnesses for minimal dressing up. |
Trinket didn't like clothes as a very young pup. She would escape from them. Now that she is used to it, she will come put her head in when she sees me with a garment. Then she prances around. She also got used to me putting her hair in a top knot. She now holds still for me. We wear light dresses in the summer time. Gets hot here but cool in the house. In winter, she wears long sleeve pajamas most of the day at home. Our house is pretty cool towards the floor. In winter, going out usually I have to wrap her in a blanket or she will shiver. |

Our Roscoe Liam has allergies and hair loss, so we got him a "Rock Star" T-shirt to deter his scratching. We finally found a good food for him - Nutrice, and are giving him fish oil as recommended by a vet assistant. We are hoping this all works and his hair will soon grow back on his back half. I just made an album, but cannot tell if a photo shows up when I post. |
