When to replace a pee pad Hi :-) This may be an question with an obvious answer but I'm just not sure so asking anyway ... How many pee's do you let your pup pee on a pad .. I'm trying to find the balance between cost effectiveness and cleanliness ... right now its about 3 ... 4 at the most and the pad gets changed ... we have 4 pads down right now till and will begin transitioning to 3 and then 1 or 2 pads ... I have a friend who replaces every time a pad gets a pee patch on it... if I did that I'd be burning through 5 or 6 pads a day ... thanks for any replies cheers :-) |
I wondered this too! I'm training Rory on pee pads and I let her go 4-5 times as well before I change it, but wondered if I should do it more frequently. I like your idea of putting more out. She did really good for a few days and now she's having accidents again. I think I'll try that for a while and see if I can get her back on track. |
The problem with leaving it with too many spots is some dogs won't go on a pad that's too soiled. Washable pads are really great. |
I try to change mine right before they stop using it. |
What I do is let him use it around 3 times and change it. What I also to make sure he does not forget where to go, as I've found Gizmo forgets quite easily at 11 wks lol, is I rub just a little urine from the dirty pad on to the new one,and he immediately knows because of the scent :-) hope this helps xoxo |

Since I have two yorkies using the pads I change them more frequently, usually two times a day. They also go outside throughout the day. I always know when I've let it go too long -- I find a little puddle right next to the pee pad. :) |

Washable pee pads are expensive up front but in the long run would work out more economical ... still would need to change them just as often or do they have a different absorption method ?? The other thing for me is I have made a mistake so to speak in letting her pee when ever she wants to .. as in I didn't crate her to get her used to holding on ... which means she pee's more frequently, hence filling the pads up quicker .... some times I think she goes in there to squeeze a pee out just to get a treat :-P :-) |

Haha, I'm not positive that's why she's doing it, but it sure seems like it! They're so smart, it might be why, who knows? She's such a little pistol! |

Careful with transitioning to fewer pads. They usually hang on to their preferred potty spot. If your pads are in different places & you eliminate one, your puppy might go there anyway out of habit...even with no pad. If they're all in one spot, you won't have a problem. |

Sometimes she'll pee on roughly the same spot of the pad a time or two, so the rest is completely clean. If she doesn't have a clean area to squat, I definitely change it. And sometimes her pee just smells more than other times, so it gets changed more or less frequently because of that. |

LOL Gizmo also, as soon as we make a big happy party, giving him his treat, goes back to the pad and tries his hardest to go again hehe. Sometimes he will get a poo out after a pee, and get his party and treat again, but mostly he just can't pull it off haha. He definitely knows exactly what he's doing :-) the are so dang smart xoxo, I just love it :-) |
I change the potty pads in Lola's playpen all the time. Because she is shut in there sometimes and has to be near it, I keep it perfectly clean always. With the four I leave out on the floor ( yes 4, Teddy misses!) I change them once per day. It's a lot of potty pads, but so much easier for me than cleaning up pee. |
I have 2 pads out. I change them about 1-2 times a day b/c Magnus potty outside for the most part. I change them first thing in the morning if the pad's more than 50% soiled. Also, I buy in bulks. I believe I bought 400 pads for about $79.00 back in April. I think I still have more than 200 left. |
I buy them on amazon for $18 for 150 count. My husband thought I was crazy when we received 6 gigantic boxes left at our door lol, so many you could barely see the front door haha. I guess I must be a little OCD , because I change them a good 4 to 5 times a day. Or maybe it's Gizmo that is OCD, and hes peeing and pooping to get those extra trets lol. |

Hey that was my explanation too hahaha. It's better to have to many than run out, that is my motto, and I'm sticking to it :-) |
There's a huge difference in the absorbency & size of potty pads. I pay about $32 for 150 on Amazon & they're the best I've found. Also, size of dog, number of dogs, how often they go outdoors-it all makes a big difference. It sure helps that my sister takes Dolly & Teena out first thing every morning. That alone saves me a potty pad every day. |
With Gizmo, he can't go out yet because he still needs 2 more sets of shots, as he's only had the first set since I rescued him, so he's inside all the time right now. We also live in a 2 story condo right at the beach, and it's actually 3 stories high because the first floor is parking. We also do not have a yard here, only common areas where animals are not allowed out in by the HOA. Once he has all of his shots, we have an amazing little dog park right at the beach that is leash on only. So once he gets his shots all over with, he'll have lots of fun going to the dog park, and walks at the beach. Also sometimes, Gizmo gets in moods where once he goes on it, that's it lol, e will refuse to go on it again till he gets a new one :-) they absorb great, I just like to keep them nice for him since he's only 11 weeks old and I'm potty training. They can have anywhere from 1 potty to 3 potties on a pad, depending on him and what he's wanting :-) |
Oh and they are also the extra large size I buy, I believe they are 23 x 36" |
I have to change mine every time they use them... They ball them up once they have been used, so they don't use them more than twice (at most). I am thinking of switching to washables once I run out of disposables... It would be more cose effective! |
I was also thinking of switching to the washables, my only worry with that, is that he might associate those with other fabrics in my house. Plus all the extra laundry lol. I'm not sure my husband would like that part, as I am a partial paraplegic, do my dear husband does the laundry. |

It varies for us. I take mine out fairly often so the pad doesn't get used as much during the day. But if I see 4 or 5 spots, I will generally change it. My pads are much larger however, I want to say something like 30 x 40? I get the pads from Sams club for people. |
We got 100 pee pads from Meijer for $20 and from Kroger for $16, not sure if its as good as the expensive ones from pet store. My pup uses it during the day in his pen when we are gone. So I change 1 to 2 pads a day. |

They are McKesson brand and they are 23" x 36 , modelb#734-UPLT2336. Hope this helps :-) I also ordered them with my prime account on amazon, so free shipping :-) |
you guys (I mean gals) are all awesome ... so many great replies. I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks about this stuff .... my XGF used to buy the large "human" pads from SAM's as well and they worked well for Zadie (we had a Coco as well a mixture of something) .. when this batch runs out I'll take ride out to SAM's and get them .. I think I'll be able to get away with one big one in the bathroom eventually .. I have 4 in a big square right now ... I'd love to have her trained to go outside but being on the 4th floor its not the same as opening the door and letting her go ... maybe when she's older and she can hang on for a good amount of time ... Does any one else's fur babies pee almost 100% on the pads but more times than not the poop ends up to the side or sometimes next to the toilet .... she at least has the concept of pooping in the bathroom and not in the rest of the house :-) |
