When to replace a pee pad Hi :-) This may be an question with an obvious answer but I'm just not sure so asking anyway ... How many pee's do you let your pup pee on a pad .. I'm trying to find the balance between cost effectiveness and cleanliness ... right now its about 3 ... 4 at the most and the pad gets changed ... we have 4 pads down right now till and will begin transitioning to 3 and then 1 or 2 pads ... I have a friend who replaces every time a pad gets a pee patch on it... if I did that I'd be burning through 5 or 6 pads a day ... thanks for any replies cheers :-) |
I wondered this too! I'm training Rory on pee pads and I let her go 4-5 times as well before I change it, but wondered if I should do it more frequently. I like your idea of putting more out. She did really good for a few days and now she's having accidents again. I think I'll try that for a while and see if I can get her back on track. |
The problem with leaving it with too many spots is some dogs won't go on a pad that's too soiled. Washable pads are really great. |
I try to change mine right before they stop using it. |
What I do is let him use it around 3 times and change it. What I also to make sure he does not forget where to go, as I've found Gizmo forgets quite easily at 11 wks lol, is I rub just a little urine from the dirty pad on to the new one,and he immediately knows because of the scent :-) hope this helps xoxo |

Since I have two yorkies using the pads I change them more frequently, usually two times a day. They also go outside throughout the day. I always know when I've let it go too long -- I find a little puddle right next to the pee pad. :) |

Washable pee pads are expensive up front but in the long run would work out more economical ... still would need to change them just as often or do they have a different absorption method ?? The other thing for me is I have made a mistake so to speak in letting her pee when ever she wants to .. as in I didn't crate her to get her used to holding on ... which means she pee's more frequently, hence filling the pads up quicker .... some times I think she goes in there to squeeze a pee out just to get a treat :-P :-) |

Haha, I'm not positive that's why she's doing it, but it sure seems like it! They're so smart, it might be why, who knows? She's such a little pistol! |

Careful with transitioning to fewer pads. They usually hang on to their preferred potty spot. If your pads are in different places & you eliminate one, your puppy might go there anyway out of habit...even with no pad. If they're all in one spot, you won't have a problem. |

Sometimes she'll pee on roughly the same spot of the pad a time or two, so the rest is completely clean. If she doesn't have a clean area to squat, I definitely change it. And sometimes her pee just smells more than other times, so it gets changed more or less frequently because of that. |

LOL Gizmo also, as soon as we make a big happy party, giving him his treat, goes back to the pad and tries his hardest to go again hehe. Sometimes he will get a poo out after a pee, and get his party and treat again, but mostly he just can't pull it off haha. He definitely knows exactly what he's doing :-) the are so dang smart xoxo, I just love it :-) |
