Hello!
I'm new to this website and a new yorkie mom!
I just adopted a new baby yorkie! Her name is Olive and she's only about 5 weeks old.
I know I saw some threads about a yorkie pup being away from her mother is bad.
That's why I'm taking care of her!
She's a healthy and happy puppy! I've been kinda worried about her eating habits. She's having a hard time eating some things. I mixed up a bit of baby food (that had no onion or garlic powder!) with puppy formula and a little mix of soft puppy food. After I added the baby food she ate it all!

Are there some things I should be worry about?
I've had a yorkie before, but she was old enough to be away from her mom. (Sadly someone stole my Sophie bear and my pug Jake the same day.)

Oh wow, do you mind me asking why she ended up away from her mommy so early ? It's ok if you don't want to answer :-) I actually ended up rescuing a 9 week old 2 weeks ago.

I would say make sure to keep some nutrical on hand and Caro syrup. When I rescued Gizmo he was going into a hypoglycemic coma because his blogs sugar was so low when I got him. He's doing great now but it was a very scary and worrisome first 36 hours for me.

All I know so far, and was the main thing that alerted me to the sugar problem, was lethargy, not wanting to wake up, but most prevalent that I seen immediately upon looking at him, was I checked his gums and they were stark white. I just knew he needed a vet right away, and by the time I got there to the vets he was on his way to a coma. At that young age, that we'd be my main concern and also making sure he gets enough nutrients by food. Not sure, but when I was feeding young kittens, they have cat replacement milk to give them the extra nutrients they need till 8 weeks old, not sure if they sell this for puppies but I would imagine they would. Also I would have a vet check the little one, just to be sure every thing is ok. Good luck with your new little fur baby xoxo

The breeder was a first time breeder, and didn't know as much as I didn't know. Though the breeder calls me often just to see how she's doing.

Olive is doing perfectly well though. She plays a lot, now she's eating, and drinking water, and she take a lot of naps.

My older pug, Samson is always watching her and when she cries, he lets us know. Though I don't let him play with her since she's so tiny compared to him.

I'll make sure her sugar doesn't drop, I've been watching her to make sure she doesn't go down. :)

Welcome to YT little Olive!! Do you mind if I ask what happened to her mommy? She's so young! There are some threads on here with a recipe for a formula that might help you with her eating. I've never had a 5 week old puppy, so I'm not really sure what advice to give you about food. Is she supposed to still be nursing at this age? Nevertheless, I'm glad she's healthy & thanks for taking care of her!

Hi and welcome - she's adorable and there is nothing like having a baby yorkie - this site has tons of info on how to care for a young puppy....

We both didn't know much about when a yorkie should be away from her mother.
The breeder still calls me to check up on her. She just called me a while ago.

I've been checking her non stop just incase if her sugar drops.
How often should I be feeding her?
She doesn't nurse from her mother anymore. Her teeth are starting to come out, but she still has gums and is picky about what she eats. Right now she just woke up and is playing around with Samson the pug and her toys. (she's in a play pin fence. She's adorable and cries for me to carry her around everywhere.
I won't let her and Samson play together yet since she's so tiny and he's much bigger than her.

Thank you for the recipe! I was able to find the goat's milk, I just need to find the mousse now.

If it makes you feel any better, I was in a similar situation with Magnus. He was only 4 weeks old when he came to me. He was a big boy from the start though. I think I fed him 5-6 times a day with puppy formula and then slowly switched over to kibbles.

He also only had gum no teeth and I made the mistake of thinking how cute it was that he'd nibble on my fingers. I didn't know better. I had a hard time with trying to stop him from mouthing. Thank goodness he grew out of that...

I also learned to know where ER was located and had their number on speed dial. -_- Both my pups got REALLY sick once in their first year. Their vet bills combied were probably close to 7K. But what gets me is that the vets couldn't tell me what was wrong. The best explanation I got was "one of those bump on the road". LOL

I'm sorry about someone snatching your babies. I've read that pet thefts have been on the rise... Oh! and congrats!

Awww...Olive is a lucky little lady to have you. I'm not really sure how often to feed her. You can probably search the forum or do a google search. I'll post a link if I find some info about that. The mousse is a Royal Canin puppy mousse. I think that the main difference is that it's whipped, so the consistency is a little smoother than typical canned food. If you can't find it, I'm pretty sure a good quality canned puppy food will work. You'll just have to smoosh it up a bit more.

Since she is still small and needs constant supervision you should buy/make a sling for her, it will make carrying her easier and free up your hands. She is absolutely adorable and it looks like she is in good hands with you. Don't be afraid to ask any question that comes to mind and good luck!:)

Oh my you have some work ahead of you. I helped my SIL with hers who was 7 weeks and it was quite a job. Make sure she stays warm and eats often. Also make sure she is getting plenty of water. Welcome to YT. Praying all works well for you both.

Oh another thing I did with gizmo is I put a heating pad on low, then put a thick soft blanket over it to keep him warm. When they are really tiny, it's hard for them to keep their body heat because their systems are so little. When I got Gizmo he was only 1 lb 4 Ozs. He hit 2 lbs today at the vet and I about jumped for joy because he was so malnourished. He's now eating the yorkie puppy royal canine and apparently is doing very well. I have been able to discontinue the nutrical and Caro syrup, although I do give a little nutrical every few days if he has a really fun play session :-)

I think giving the royal canine mousse and the formula is a great idea, I know Gizmo has done amazing on royal canine, although he still insists on eating it mixed with a little warm water, I think he likes the gravy it makes hehe. I do make him eat it dry during the night too. Also if your baby doesn't want to eat out of a bowl, hand feeding with a baby spoon works wonders lol. It's amazing how much better they eat off a spoon. I also leave food and water 24/7 , because sometimes he's a snacker :-) good luck with your little one xoxo

Olive is doing perfectly fine, she's just a ball full of energy and happiness. She growls and barks at her toys and her big sister Miss. Kitty, and older brother Samson the pug.

I'll be taking her to the vet next week Saturday and hope the vet checks that everything is A-ok! :)

She's been biting on my fingers and I felt that she has her back teeth growing! I'm so happy!
She also loves to take her long naps and loves to sleep on her back. She's just so adorable.

Thank you for the recipes! I tried one, and she didn't take to it so much. My mother was making chicken liver for Samson, and I gave her just a bit with a little carrots and potatoes, I smashed it up really good and put the juice and she licked the tiny bowl clean and was wanting more. Of course I didn't give her any more, and I read that liver is okay for them, just not in big portions or so often.

Is chicken liver okay for yorkies to eat?
