I can use some advice please... Ok so Coco is the most wonderful little girl ever. She just has one problem. I can't leave her alone in a room for too long because she chews up the corners of the carpet. She does great in the kitchen but I would love to give her more freedom since she's potty trained. Like yesterday my b/f and I went out to lunch and I let her have the house. We were only going to be gone for a couple of hours but when we came back, she had chewed up a few corners of the carpet in different rooms. What can i do? |
I don't know what to tell ya Nobie. You saw my carpet in the hallway at the bottom of the stairs ... all chewed up by Codie and Katie! They just love to chew on the carpet, who knows why! But please don't be mad at my little Coco bear -- she's just so darn cute and loveable! :p Coco, Auntie Jen said that you can chew on anything you like! :p |
I would continue to keep her confined and give her chew toys to chew on. My dogs went through this too and chewed up my area rugs but they also outgrew it. You just have to keep her confine untill she outgrows the destructive period. |
I'm having a similar problem. He dosen't chew up everything but will soil the carpet on purpose to let us know he's mad at us. Do you have toys laying around for her? |
I feel sheepish giving you advice, because you always have such great advice of your own to give! However, Bitter Apple has worked well for us on carpet and cable wires and such. I only have to spray it on the item one time and my Yorkies seem to have memory that it was sprayed on that particular object and stay away from it forever (so far...LOL) |
Did you try deoderant or the bitter apple stuff?? I heard it works... Good luck! |
If no one else is home, then why does such a small doggie need that much freedom? I don't suppose bitter apple spray works at all? |
I know she hates bitter apple, but the problem is I don't know where to spray it. The little crapper will find a new place to chew. So do I need to spray alllll my corners?.lol..She is so not destructive either, this is the only thing that she does that is so out of character. She is quiet and playful and just sooo well behaved. She has sooooo many buddha bones, chew toys, stuffed animals, jungle gyms. I lay them alllll out for her. I guess I can try to spray every corner. She is almost 10 months old, but she's already got her adult teeth, so she really shouldn't be chewing on stuff like that anymore right? Karen, your question is very valid. I know she doesn't need that much space. I would even just love to have her in my room. She's a good girl. Now that it's winter I feel guilty leaving her in a carpet less kitchen. It's warm but I keep thinking she'll be more comfy with some cozy carpeting and my bed to lay in while I'm out or at work. I guess I just feel guilty for leaving her so i feel like if I give her some extra space, she'll run around and play more until I get home. |
Bitter apple is the key girl. Bella was doing the same thing to the carpet enterance into our kitchen and we couldnt get her to stop so we sprayed bitter apple a few times and she's never tried it again. |
Yeah, Over here, we can get some spray which doesnt taste nice so they dont chew. It doesnt smell and it doesnt stain carpets of couches, etc. |
dont feel bad, you gotta see my carpet, look like a racoon came in and ate it. i have a big tub of plaster covering it. looks pretty stupid in my livingroom |
Bitter apple is how i broke Gus of that. The first few time I caught him I would spray some on my finger and put it in his mouth. But he would go back to the spots he had already damaged and do even more damage. So I spraied the damaged parts heavy and he never did it again. After putting in new carpet I thought he would damage it but he lost interest and we never had the problem again. |
Oh, I know she's a good girl. I think they just get bored and find something all of a sudden that didn't occur to them before like the corners of the carpet. You might have one that never chewed anything, but then one day something is chewed up and it seems so out of character. I don't think they really are out of the chewing stage until they are past two. I wish I could remember, but you do forget those things after so many years! :D It probably won't be all that much longer before you can leave her with the run of the house. |
for two days now, lexi has the run of the house.. what else can she possibly do, eat more carpet, who cares now..its just carpet..im done getting aggrevated over it.. life is too short... |

Everything in this house is either chewed or marked. Even the rockers have been chewed off the wooden rocking chairs.I just give up...no sense replacing everything since they will just do it again , and we really do need new carpeting !  |
