What can I do about this??? Please help with suggestions. Ok, my Harley is such a good boy in everyway, he was potty trained very early and has such a sweet desposition. But....... when ever someone comes over he gets so excited, he wants to jump up on them and lick lick lick, and he does this almost the whole time they are here. It is usually just me and him and I let him lick me all the time (love those yorkie kisses) but you can tell that other people don't want that and I don't blame them. I tell him NO NO and sometimes get the paper, which I never hit, but it does scare him, just the sound but that doesn't work either. I even tried the water bottle thingy and he doesn't settle down long enough for me to spray him. I love him to death, he is so good in every other way but when company comes it is like a carnaval. Any suggestions would be great. I don't want people to hate to come over because they are thinking of him jumping on them all the time. PLEASE HELP. I love him so much and I want others to love him too. Thanks! :( |
Besitos It's funny that you say that people don't like to get licked. I have to admit, I too used to be like that. Until I got my little Baby, I didn't like it either. Now I got to PetSmart and let all the doggies lick me. Guess I'm in love!! :luvu: So you have to tell your friends to get some Yorkies! :animal36 That should solve the problem! :D PS. I do NOT let Baby lick my face after she has eaten her poop. I wait awhile! |
I definitely don't have any advice for you on this b/c Gidget still acts like that too! :p If I don't want her jumping up on anyone I have to hold her! Good luck in finding something that works! |
LOL that is too funny Nicole, people that don't have the love like we do for animals find it irratating, he just loves people and is a lovebug. Its not like he is biting or growling at them. I have even told one of my sons, because he said he hated Harley licking his face all the time, I told him "then go home, cause this is Harleys house" I felt terrible that I said that but it is true right? I just don't want people to think he is a bug-a-boo, he minds me with everything else. His tail is going the whole time people are here, jumping up on the couch while they are trying to talk to me and jumping in thier laps and licking thier faces. I feel like sometimes I should put him in his crate and I don't want to do that. I would never hit him either especially when he just wants kisses. |
I can totally relate!! My Nikko is the same way. He is so pushy, he doesn't realize not everyone likes to be given a bath by him!! :) He is really a sweet boy (maybe its just a boy yorkie thing) and he pretty much wants to lick everyone to death. I feel bad yelling at him about it because he is only being sweet but as you said, not everyone appreciates that. If you find a way of stopping this behavior, let me know because I am totally confused about it myself. |
Also he is just 6 months old, do you think he will grow out of this? |
You might try shaking a can with change in it. My dogs dont lick but they jump up and down and act all crazy like. We either spray them with the water bottle or shake a can with change in it. |
Now thats a great ideal, never thought about the can one, I am going to try that. Thanks so much for that suggestion. |
We do the same thing when they bark excessively and it works. |

Now that's funny!!!! Maybe you can find a toy for him to play with. I don't know, everyone loves Princess's kisses. :) |
I am wondering if you might try spraying one of the deterrents, none come to mind except coat saver or bitter apple on your hands and when he starts his licking quickly put your hand between his licker and the person and do a corrective command..I have done that for other things BUT, ya gotta remember to wash your hands well before you touch food. It really tastes yucky! Tells you how dumb I was when I used it the first time...LOL |
I have handled it differantly,I found a real cute sign with a yorkie on it at a fair this summer, its says "this is a licking good house,if you go in YOU get licked",now I dont care if people like it or not, they were warned |
I know you love your Yorkie giving you kissies, but it sounds to me if you want him to stop kissing other people then you need to be consistant every way around. You can't expect him to know its okay to give you kissies but not everyone else, thats confusing. So you either need to shut down on ALL the kisses or tell people to get used to it :) I would vote for the latter. |
I guess you are right about the kisses, my last yorkie kissed me but he never bothered anybody else. He was different. This one wants kisses from everybody. So if I have to make that decision, then people can stay away cause I can't do without those kisses. |

It's such a Yorkie thing! I love it! That running in the air, wiggling all over, trying to get some tongue anywhere near the new arrival. cracks me up. Not sure how you can handle it with people that don't like it. My oldest son (living at home) complained when we first got Shelby. I told him he would have to get used to it. Now he comes home from work and lays on the floor and just lets her have her way with him :D Once she is "done" she will stop, then he can wash up and have some peace. People that don't like it don't visit here that often and when they do Shelby sort of ignores them. Their loss. |
Lol, I have a feeling that this forum is probably the only Yorkie forum where others, like me, have ended a relationship with a man because he didnt like my Yorkie :D Glad to know Im not alone! |

A couple of options. As previously said, teach him that kissing is not okay. That is most easily accomplished by NEVER petting him or loving on him UNLESS he has all of his feet on the floor (or is sitting whichever you choose). OR Another choice. Teach him to kiss on command. Only allow kissing when you give the command. OR Babygate him away from your visitors. OR Put him on a leash when you have visitors so that you can keep him from jumping up. OR warn your visitors before they come in OR don't allow them in. Let us know what you decide! |
I think your right about not expecting him to want to kiss others when I let him kiss me but it just isn't kissing, when they come in he jumps up and down constantly on them. And there is no way I will stop kissing him, I myself love his kisses, not everybody has that same feeling though. But tonight I had company and he did his usual thing jumping up and down and then when they sat down he jump in thier laps wanting to kiss or just wanting them to pet him. So I told them before they came in what to expect and then I would give him a stern NO NO and he did finally stop somewhat. I think that in time he will learn. We don't get much company and he just eats it up anytime someone pays attention to him. I will just have to work on it I guess. I want to thank everyone for thier comments because it has helped me. And I see that he isn't the only one that does it so maybe it is just a yorkie thingy hehe. Thanks again. |

I can't believe someone wouldn't want your pup's kisses! How sad! LOL, know what you mean though...not sure of any answers but good luck. |
What can I do about this??? Please help with suggestions I wouldn't complain about your dog jumping up and licking and kissing people when they come to your house. I thinks its great that he is like that. I wish my Bayley was a little more friendly like your Harley. My dog is like the guard dog from hell. I will say that he does lick and kiss my all over, and that is all that matters. The best kisses in the world. |
1 Attachment(s) OK, I found the perfect soloution, I agree I should be happy that he kisses instead of bites, I just wish he would settle down after a bit but HEY if that is the way he is then so be it, I love it and if anybody else doesn't, then read this sign....... Going to put it up at the front door. What do you think? :animal36 |
I remember seeing a sign that said.. "my Yorkie can't control his licker" That's the one you need. lol |
Oh I wish I could find one like that, that would be perfect hehe. |
|
So I told them before they came in what to expect... You're thinking he understands English? ...but it just isn't kissing, when they come in he jumps up and down constantly on them. Well, how about putting him on a leash so that he can't do that if your company finds it annoying? Distract him with a bone to chew on. The signs are cute! |
I told the people before they came in what to expect LOL. Not Harley. |
I don't have any advice yet, but i just want to point out...some people have stated annoyance at people that don't like to be licked! Keep in mind...some people are allergic to saliva! I am! I am soooo paranoid and crossing my fingers that I don't have an allergic reaction to snickers when i get him home. We have spent a lot of time at the breeders house, but you never know. I am still afraid of letting him lick me! |
