Get your *EXPLETIVE *hands off my baby!!!! 3 Attachment(s) So I've had Rasta 2 days and he is awesome! the only problem I have are the ppl who think he's fair game to pet:mad:. We went to the vet for a health check and register him on post and it seemed like everyone had grabby hands! You would think visitors and workers at a veterinary office would especially know not to touch an animal without the owners permission:rolleyes:. Is this normal for yorkie owners??? I thought it was bad with our English Bulldog but this was our first day out and was ridiculous! Luckily I had him in his ventilated travel purse so no one was able to touch or poke at him. I had my son with me and when one rudely brazen woman reached for the purses ZIPPER he said "You have to ask before touching other people's things, right mommy?". Out of the mouths of babes....now why can't adults have the same considerations??? Btw that's my hubby in the picture but he SWEARS he doesn't like little dogs....I think he's in denial. |
Omg he's so adorabe, I would have a hard time keeping my hands off of him too! Seriously though, I don't know why people don't ASK first. I always ask first. It's just impolite to touch someone's pet without asking permission...not to mention dangerous. I can be kind of a snob when it comes to that. I'll just come straight out & say NO...Don't touch my baby!!! I really don't care what they think or me because I'll probably never see them again. And if I do, they'll know better than to touch my puppy the next time. |
Rasta is adorable! Your husband is too funny. No man can resist the charms of a Yorkie. :D People lose their minds, forget their manners, around a super cute puppy. Even with my big boys, I've had problems with people approaching the dogs inappropriately. You have to get good at heading people off and directing them nicely. I have to tell people to keep their hands below my boys' heads. |
I am, actually I can't explain how I am feeling about this. When I am out I will interact with many dogs ( always have, even though I have not until now had a wee darlin' of my own.) I am not aware of being an intruder, or of anyone being upset that I want to meet and converse with their canine family. I don't worry about strangers talking to, petting or wanting to play with Alfie. If I feel uncomfortable with a dog or human then I don't interact. What is socialising and what is the benefit if it is not sociable for your pup and for you? I will stretch my hand to any Staffie, sit face to face with a Great Dane, or chuckims a poodle. I want to be social with dogs and almost all dogs want to be social with me. To behave otherwise to me is alien so I am probably the type of person who is making you feel annoyed. Like I said I don't know how to feel about this topic, but it has just dawned on me that this may be pissing some people off. I think I am too old to change. And I think generally most dogs love the attention. I know I love it when I know they are so paying attention to me. Such connections. |
@Misty I don't have a problem with my puppy socializing I want him to. But he hasn't had his complete rounds of puppy shots he's only 12 weeks. My problem was that he was in a purse carrier so I thought i would already have given a "vibe" not to touch. His carrier didnt just have him in it, it also had my drivers license, credit cards, insurance cards, etc. Ppl at the vet (where there are sick animals) should know better than to automatically assume a dog is friendly/healthy or that the owner feels comfortable with them being touched. Right now I dont feel comfy with other's touching him because his vacs are not complete and he is so small so it would be very taxing on his immune system to fight off germs some of these well meaning animal lovers may and do have from being around sick animals or pets who are immune but still carry the germs/virus. The only reason we were at the vet was to do his healthy pup exam. |

1 Attachment(s) I can see why everyone wants to pet Rasta, he's adorable! :) I do understand how you feel about complete strangers not asking for permission though. Yazmin and I are going to be spending a day at the Pet Expo and I don't want strangers petting her all day long. I had custom patches made by a Seller on eBay for stroller and carrying bag. Hopefully, this will help detour strangers from petting her in a kind way. ;) |

@Carla thanks :D I'm going to have to look into getting some of those patches...luckily he won't be going anywhere until his next set of shots lol |

@ circi it is EXACTLY like being pregnant lol. I think I just may have to channel my former pregnant "witchiness" when ppl reach for him lol. |
It is soooo frustrating! My girl looks like she wants attention, but what if stranger pets her in an arthritis spot and she gets snappy? And it is my dog..ask first! I don't like when ppl get too close to my young nephews either. I don't know their intentions. What really gets me is people trying to give treats without asking.:thumbdown My girl is deathly sensitive to some things. i ask before petting unless the pup approaches me. I don't mind if one does but I don't think an owner should let a dog come into contact with a stranger without asking. Mutual respect. |
My advice... Get used to it!! Adorable dogs are attention grabbers... People will coo and want to touch.... I can't even begin to count the amount of times my boys have been photographed...(yes not just touched, but had their pic taken) by complete and total strangers!! I don't worry with my oldest, but our blue born Mack is hands off!! I have learned when he is with us in public ( which is rare) to politely tell folks he is off limits... Now Bevo on the other hand, loves and sucks up all attention he can get!! I understand he hasn't been fully vaccinated... So until he has... Stay indoors! Lol! Good luck! |
It is Rey hard for people to resist the puppy. They have magical powers. Even now everyone wants to pet him or pick him up. He is extremely friendly but people should ask. I am an animal lover. I always ask if I can pet them. Some dogs do not like to be touched or are protective. |
I, personally, would never touch anyone's dog without asking first. I even advise my children to do that. I think everybody should want to know whether the pup (even a small, young one) is approachable or, for some reason, is not. When people would come at Lucy as a pup, I'd just swaddle her in my arms so that if anyone got too close they'd be rubbing my boob! Kept everybody at bay. And NO ONE should touch your purse. I had Lucy in a stroller recently and she was happy as a clam until a woman walked up and, without asking, tried to unzip the mesh lining. Lucy jumped at her. No harm but a little scare. IMHO, the lady got what she deserved. |
This is so true with yorkie babies and real babies! Luckily our few outtings I have only had a few people ask if they could pet my little Milo and they were all quick little scratches behind the ear and then they went on their way. With my infants I've had so many people come up and touch their face that I've had to be down right rude and say "what on earth makes you think it's ok to touch my newborn with your dirty hands without even asking?!" Ps: my hubby claims to not be a fan of little dogs but he adores my sisters yorkie and our little Milo <3 |
I never ask, but, I never approach/attempt to pet, either. If the animal approaches me, then I extend a proper greeting, but ONLY if I'm approached FIRST. I've always said... "Dogs know that you love them, weather you own them or not." On the other hand... I rarely take just one of my guys out. Sneakers (5yo M Alpha) always accompanies us, and like at PetSmart, I use a Shopping Basket for my guys. Just don't like them accessing the floor there....yuck ! Anyway, I don't have to tell someone not to pet ! If they even get close to my Females or Pup, Sneak will let them know they're out of line, and may leave them with a lingering reminder requiring a Band-Aid ! I try not to laugh, when I see someone snap their hand back as fast as they can, and only say "That's not a good idea" and move on. IF they are polite enough to ask to touch/pet... I have to pick one of my guys up and stand away from the Cart a little. Sneakers doesn't trust my judgment all that much, when it comes to someone else messing with "HIS" pack, and complains loudly. So, those instances are brief. |
I really don't like it when people do that .. When Oscar was a pup and our first trip to Petco we walked in the door and the cashier was all gaga over him. Before i could even blink she bent down and scooped him up . He went crazy she almost dropped him , I grabbed him just in time.. To this day he will not let anyone approach when he is on the ground. |
We don't get out much, but I haven't had anyone try to touch Huey without asking first "is he friendly?" If I don't like the look of that person, I will say something like "he doesn't like to be touched", but if they look ok, I will say yes and let them pet. I think I, personally, put out a pretty strong "don't touch me" vibe (I have a really big personal bubble and become very uncomfortable when people get inside its radius uninvited), so I think that may be part of why they always seem to ask. I think I must start to sneer :angry:or get deer in the headlights  eyes... |
Lol lol @Marcarter I'm going to have to get the sneer down! I HIGHLY doubt I will be letting anyone hold him even after his completely vaccinated(I hardly let my husband unless HE'S sitting down himself and he thinks I'm crazy for it :D). I may let ppl pet IF I like the look of them. would it be strange if I made them sanitize their hands first??? When my son was younger I always made people do this when they wanted to hold him. |

I seldom take my babies out in public, for this very reason. People just can not resist squealing and wanting to pet and hold the "adorable little dog"! |
Have to say that I would expect people at a vet's office to want to touch any puppy. They are just so cute but I have never had anyone try to open one of my puppy purses or carriers. That takes a lot of nerve! It boarders on criminal behavior. That is your personal property. Of course no puppy that has not had all it's shots should be handled by strangers, except the vet and staff. All puppies are cute and many people love them but I really think the small breed pups need extra protection when out in public. They can be strong and energetic dogs but they are very vulnerable due to their size. |
I understand your concern. My puppy hasn't had all of her puppy shots as of yet. If someone wants to touch her, I just kindly say "She hasn't had all of her shots yet, so I prefer her not to be pet. Just safety precautions for her health". I also ask them if they have animals and are their animals up-to-day with shots... I don't bring her out unless shes in the car anyway. I am a up front person and by the look on my face, people always ask first. By the way, with a name like "Rasta" are you of Caribbean roots? :) |
@LittleMsCupcake Yes I am Caribbean(Jamaican to be specific;))! Alot of people don't know how I got his name or how it originates or is pronounced hehehe I'm glad you noticed :) |
GEE WHIZ !, I didn't realize how much trouble so many of you were having with people (attempted/unauthorized) handling of your guys ! I didn't realize how lucky I am, having an ill-tempered, possessive Dog like Sneakers :D I must admit though, that I do encourage/train my Males on several levels, to be defensive, so, I guess I can accept a little credit for it. |
@ SWHouston I think Rasta is going to be a little possessive like Sneakers...my husband tried to give me a kiss while I was holding him and Rasta tried to paw my husband away :rofl28ib: |
Ian is very socialized with people and other dogs, but the other day one of my neighbors tried to pet him, and he snapped at her. I had never seen him do that before, to that extent. It happened so quickly, but I had him on a short leash. |
So weird to hear about some of you guys' dogs snapping at strangers. Luma has never snapped at me, my bf, any children, strangers...she gets easily excited and will whine if she sees a stranger, like.."PLEEEEASE PET ME!" She asks THEM to pet her. She has an extremely strong "sit stay" so I have her sit and they can pet her while she sits. Rosie has only touched the outside ground once or twice since I've had her. She's 7 months old. I usually carry her in a bag and people literally lose their minds and freak out over her. I don't like it since she's tiny, so I don't let them pet her. For her safety. I'd be afraid a little kid would hit her on the neck and kill her lol. |
I totally know what you mean. It's especially horrible when parents don't teach their kids to ask first. It's a good way for a kid to pet the wrong dog and get bit. I've had to tell a few kids "no" and a few times, they kept approaching anyways, despite me telling them "no touch." I am fairly amazed at how many adults think nothing of it either. I think the cute factor totally takes over and they just want to touch them because they are so small and adorable, compared to the avg dog...especially the puppies!! One of my dogs is friendly to everyone. The other one is scared to death of people outside of my family. He's not vicious or anything, nor will he approach people...but he may nip at someone if they approach him and try to pet him. If they let him approach them, he may sniff and give their hand a lick...but he does not want them to put their hand above his head to pet him. Don't ask me why...I know his former owner and she definitely didn't abuse him...and I for sure have never punished my dog. |
