We're trying again....
 

We just lost Lola on Sunday (http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...date-lola.html) (that whole ordeal was a nightmare) but hubby hates to see me sad and has found another yorkie. We're supposed to go get her this Sunday. Since we only had Lola one night before turning her over to the vet, I think I'm ready for this. And this time, we can't take the baby to the vet as soon as we get her since that'll be on a Sunday, but first thing on Monday morning we'll be getting her checked out. I just can't handle the heartbreak of losing another little one.

I just wanted to share my excitement with fellow yorkie-lovers.

No, we won't be doing business with them again. They were sympathetic and answered every time we called, but I just don't feel right going through them again.

The lady we got her from is on a fixed income and already spent the money we gave her but she is supposed to give us a refund on Sept 3rd. And thanks!

I just read your previous threads about Lola. I'm so sorry. That must have been a very difficult experience for you. I'm happy you found a new pup. :) I think you made a good decision not to go with the same breeder. I know you brought home Lola at 9 weeks. But just so you know, it really is much easier for these little ones to transition to a new home at at least 12 weeks old. They learn a lot from their mommies in that extra month. It also gives them time to grow stronger physically. Bringing home a 12 week old puppy might be able to save you from another heartbreaking experience. I just wanted to put that out there because I'd hate for you to have to go through another week like last week. Good luck with your new baby!! Looking forward to seeing pictures!

Since your other baby had Parvo, you need to be very CAREFUL with bringing another puppy into the area. EVERYTHING must washed down with bleach. This Virus lives for a long time in surfaces.

ALSO, please I beg of you don't bring a new baby home until it's at least 12 weeks old.

:thumbup: I agree wholehearted. I'm so sorry for the loss of Lola- That poor sweet baby. I know you only had her for a short time, but I do believe she will still be in your heart and soul. I wish you the best of luck with your new addition.

Make sure your getting the pup from a reputable breeder or it could just mean more heart break. A reputable breeder will not let the puppies go to there new homes before 12 weeks, they get health checks and any available genetic testing done on both breeding dogs, they have breed for awhile to know there lines to make sure there is no illnesses in the lines, they have a spay and neuter contract, the dogs are registered with the AKC, they don't use the words teacup and micro, and you can see where the pups and parents are living.

Thanks for your concern, everyone. With Lola, she actually was supposed to be 13 weeks. That's what her papers said. But the lady that we got her from took her to the vet and on those papers it said she was 9 weeks. We're still trying to figure that all out. Lola was tiny so there's no way she was 13 weeks, but when we agreed to buy her, we thought she was.

This new baby will be 12 weeks when I get her on Sunday, so *fingers crossed* everything should go smoothly this time.

And we have bleached everything Lola came into contact with (it wasn't much, as she was only here for a little bit) but if the new baby has her parvo shot, she won't get it, will she?? Or is there still a chance she will get it? This is my first real experience with parvo, so I'm not great with it. :-/

Very good that you cleaned everything that your pup came into
contact with. Maybe even to buy new things wouldn't be a bad idea.

I don't have any experience with Parvo. Hopefully someone else will be able to give you some advice about that. Or you could give your vet a call just in case. Congrats on your new puppy! So glad to hear she's 12 weeks old. I wish you the best of luck. Keep us updated! :)

They are not immune until about two weeks after there last set of puppy shots. Which is around 16 weeks old I think.

I'm sorry about your loss of Lola. I have no experience with Parvovirus, but I've heard from member Yorkiemom that Virkon S is the only thing that works effectively to kill the Parvovirus. I wish you health and happiness with your new baby.

After the sad story we've read about little Lola, I'm so glad you're going to get another yorkie! My fingers and toes are crossed that everything goes smoothly with your new lil one. I hope the next threads we see from you are about sweet puppy problems and how in love you are!

Please talk to your vet and tell them you have found another puppy. See if they have any recommendations to keep the puppy safe from parvo. I would personally get rid of anything that came into contact with Lola, and make sure your car is disinfected too. I wish you lots of love and happiness with your baby.

Hope all goes well Sunday when you pick your new baby up. I think it is the right thing to do getting another right away. The new pup won't take the pain away of losing Lola but it will certainly help you.

I would probably call my vet as well.. They usually have cleaning products there, esp used for cleaning parvo! Maybe he can " lend" you some :D

I'm new here and I feel for your loss. But, you had a puppy with parvo. If you bring that new puppy in your house before it is fully immune, it will have a huge chance of getting parvo. Reading up on the internet, it says a puppy is not fully immune until the last set of shots, somewhere around 16 to 18 weeks. Can you ask the breeder to hold her for you till she has the 3rd round? It would be horrible if this pup gets parvo too. I know you said she didn't touch much, but parvo is also carried on your feet and anything else you touched, it is also very hard to kill the virus. Ask your vet, ask the breeder, get all the info before you bring your sweet puppy home.

This is how it worked the night we got her: The lady that we got her from said she was shy, and we believed her. She was held in the car (we've bleached our clothes, too) and then we brought her into our home. She laid on my chest until she started acting like she was going to throw up. We got a puppy pad out and she threw up on that. Later, she kept moving around on me, so I put her on the puppy pad again and she pooped and peed. We got that up right away, and at the time we just washed our hands (we didn't know she had parvo yet). Then we went to bed. It was in the middle of the night that I realized it wasn't just an upset tummy from getting shots, it was most likely parvo. She was sleeping in a little carrier that I put up on the dresser by my bed (because I wanted her to be able to see me). We've thrown that carrier away, plus the sheet that I had inside of it to make it softer. My daughter held her as I got dressed to take Lola to the vet, and she held her again in the car.

And of course, Lola never got to come back home with us. Really, that's all that she came into contact with. We've thrown everything away, or bleached it (like our clothes, I didn't want to throw those away.) We have other dogs here and they're fine, I really don't think there's any parvo left in this house. She was so sick, didn't move on her own, and only got placed where we put her (which was mainly on my chest because I knew she felt bad)

Sounds like you were on top of things with her and where she was. I would double bleach though. And ask the vet. I'm sure you are very excited to get a puppy! Blessing to you and your new puppy.

To be safe did you bleach the bottom of your shoes?

Parvo wouldn't effect your other dogs because they are vaccinated. What about water and food did you give her any of that? I would toss that stuff too.

I think I might also steam clean the floors.

We actually did. I was proud of my daughter for thinking of it. I don't think I would have.

No, she wouldn't drink or eat anything while she was here. The best we could do was put milk on our finger and try to get some into her mouth. :( But she didn't share any dishes with any of the other dogs and I always bleach my dishes when I wash them, so they were bleached, just because. lol They were bleached before we even knew it was parvo.

That's something we hadn't thought of but I'll have my hubby do it Saturday. We have a steam cleaner, so it won't even take very long to get it done.

You did take care of your bedding correct? Also to be safe I would clean any rugs.. Esp if you have a Welcome mat outside!!

Veterinary Advice About Canine Parvovirus.

Yep, with the bedding I didn't have a choice. I pulled Lola out of her carrier and I was going to cuddle her on the bed, and that's when I saw all the bloody diarrhea on her. :( It got all over my husband's side of the bed, so I had to wash them right away.
