Storms...storms...storms.... I've got 3 pups scared of storms right now...I think Vinnie is scared cuz the girls are scared...don't know why they are so scared they didn't use to be this scared...ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhh |
I feel your pain! It storms all the time here in the summer in South Florida. Cooper used to wear his Thundershirt for comfort but it doesn't seem to help anymore. He just wants to be held :( Max, on the other hand doesn't even know its raining. I have yet to try any of those herbal remedies. Have you? |
Haven't tried them yet, but seriously shaking here, Mini is a wreck, put the thundershirt I have on her and to no avail, I put it on Mia and still trembling. At Daddy's house its a big house, and we all go in the bedroom, radio on, fan on and I guess they don't hear it....Vinnie has given up playing scared and is fine but these girls are literally hanging on to me for dear life... I feel awful for them, I honestly never saw them like this...Its raining sooooo hard and the lightning is fierce...my sump pump is going off like every 3 minutes...please don't let the power go out again cuz I don't have a sump pump back up yet $$$$ :mad: |
Callie goes from one summer being scared the next summer nothing then back to the summer after scared. It has helped having Sammy around the last few times it has stormed because he could care less and if I didn't shut the doggy door he would be outside :eek: |
My neighbors dog just shakes and pants big time when it rains hard or storms. I just give her about 3 drops of liquid Xanax (with just a touch of honey in it) and in about 15 minutes she is calm and playing with her ball or snoozing. You could talk your vet about it. Xanax acts quicker than some others - but the liquid can be pricey - the pills are much less and if you wrap a little cheese around them they can just gobble them down. My neighbors dog gets so upset she won't even eat the cheese so I use the liquid for her. |

We are living through this too. The last two days we have had storms. But we did need the rain. |

oh so sorry for the pups! My guys are the same, the biggest seam to be the most scared. If the storms are really bad I put a leash on because I am afraid if the door blows open or a window breaks they would be gone. (sorry--- lived too many years with really bad storms and a dh who doesnt want to put shudders up unless it is a cat 3 lol -- and I just always think of the worst case) |
Our shepherd goes through this. We recently bought her a thunder shirt and it has made a world of difference for her. She slept in hers all night. I just hope the effects don't wear off over time. Before that the vet had us give her children's liquid benedryl. It helped keep her calm. But the thundershirt works much better. |
I think the Thundershirt is doing the opposite for Cooper now. He knows that when I bring it out that a rainstorm is coming. I think he equates the Thundershirt with the storm and automatically gets scared when he sees it. We get tons of thunder here without rain. I'm trying to desensitize Cooper by taking him on a walk or going outside to play ball during the thunder. It works a little. |

Oh that stinks! My boys have no fear of storms, they bark like little mad men at the thunder! I think they think they own the sky! |
Joey's breeder says that she takes her pups out in the storm if we have one when the dogs are young. Joey will grow at loud thunder, but most of the time it doesn't phase him. It does scare me and I have to try my best not to show the dogs that I'm scared, no coddling. You should distract as much as possible, but no babying. When you baby your dog, you are telling him he's right to be afraid. Turn the TV up or turn music on, get a white noise machine, or play this over and over until they get use to the sounds. |
If distraction and getting them busy eating treats, playing games, training, etc., and desensitization over time don't work, try the Thundershirt. I was doing a lot of loud and noisy work around the house yesterday with things falling and breaking (!) even and lots of doors being open and closed, vacuums, other cleaning implements going and Tibbe got a bit unsettled. I stuck his Thundershirt on him and he went to sleep. I wonder if that thing is impregnated with drugs or something, the way it puts him out. You might try it one yours. |
