My puppy was afraid of thunderstorms at first (I live in S. Florida so we have one every afternoon during the summer). Everytime there's a thunderstorm I turn off everything, radio, tv, fans, so he can hear it loud and clear, and I start playing fetch with him, giving him treats, running around and acting like nothing is happening. I did this a couple of times, and not it doesnt even phase him, he doesnt even look up unless it's really loud, but then he'd go on like he heard nothing. I know it's tough if you dont start to do it when theyre puppies or if you adopt, it's hard to overcome. And if one dog is scared the other ones will think theres a reason to be scared. I was at Petsmart the other day while it was thundering and this giant Great Dane was shaking! The owner said he was afraid of thunder. It's funny how even big guys get scared. Honestly I'm terrified of thunderstorms, I hate them, but I try to act like Im not around bentley. And what do yo know? I'm starting to not be afraid of them myself lol Like the others said try desentization and pay more attention to the one that gets scared first? :-/ |
Pixie became so terrified of storms, rain, plane, motorcycles going by that I had to put her on a daily medicine called clomicalm. Xanax and the thundershirt stopped working for her. I hated to do it but it was horrible to see her so scared all the time. It has made a big difference but she still has episodes of shaking. |

We're having a storm and there was this E-NORmous clap of thunder and the electricity and everything went off suddenly. I sort of eeked out of shock it was so close and loud and Tibbe walled his eyes, ears back and he ran to me. I think my screaming out just as the huge clap came really scared him. The rain is pouring and it's lightening, thundering but the electricity came back on within a 1/2 minute. Tibbe barked out the window and then looked at me with his ears back and looking a bit scared when everything started back up again and the thunder clapped again. I'm feeling bum with my hip as I was up and on it a lot today - overdid it - and then went to the eye doctor, then the grocery story and I'm hurting. Don't feel like playing and distracting him. I'm wiped out so I got his Thundershirt out and on him - boom - he's sound asleep. I swear this bit of grey fabric is soaked in some kind of sleeping drug. Tibbe gets it on and he's out like a light. Never ever have I seen anything work like this. |

We woke up this morning to a tornado warning. For the first time in my life I ran through the house waking up people and grabbing pups and kitties to head to the basement. Poor little Puff was shaking and panting like we were at the vet! We did later hear that there may have been a tornado about 2 miles from our house. What a way to start the day! |
Poor babies. I hope the storm is over... |

I wish Riley was scared of a storm lol. This little big guy will run to the window and barks at the thunder! I don't think he is scared of anything! |

When I first go Brandi she was terrified on storms. She was so scared that she even jumped in the shower with me once. She hates water that's how I knew she was really scared. Then I read such wonderful advice on here. The advice was that I should was to not cuddle her so much doing the thunderstorms. Just go about your business as if nothing is going on. Well I did that and she now just goes to sleep. |
