Were any YTer's husbands against having a Yorkie? 1 Attachment(s) Were any of yalls hubbys/wives/gfs/bfs against having a Yorkie(or any small dog) when it was first brought up? My husband used to tell me " A Yorkie is not setting foot(paw?)in this house". Then I persuaded him to visit a breeder 8 weeks ago and we're picking up little Miss Pinktini(pictured below) next Weds. Hehehe. How did you get your spouse/partner to change his/her mind(keep it PG of course lol lol)? |
first off, that baby is absolutely ADORABLE!!! My hubby wasnt a "dog" person. But, he let me get my 1st yorkie (Bevo) after I told him I wanted another "human" baby! He thought the way I treated Bevo was ridiculous and often was very jealous of him....Then, Mack Brown came along. Mack completely melted his heart and he became one of us dog weirdos. The hardest men will become so soft after loving a yorkie. It just cant be helped!! Your hubby will melt too!! Good luck with your new baby!!!!! |
Yes! Vehemently opposed. We actually fought over this decision. We lost our 14 year old German Shepherd to Canine Degenerative Myelopathy on Easter morning. She was our world and he had leaky eyes for days afterwards - even took her picture to work for his desktop. Strange timing, but the friends that gave us our GSD had a litter of Yorkies born the morning after Chatty died. I was offered one. DH said no. NO! Absolutely not. They're not even real dogs. Why would I want a rat with hair? Long story short - the next time we were at the house, my friend handed me a puppy and said, hey, I just gave her a bath, can you hold her in this towel until she warms up? I said sure. The puppy looked up at me, licked my chin, and settled down on my chest to nap - and slept there for the next two hours. DH finally caved and said I could have her if I let him take our boat in for maintenance. Deal! Funny thing is - he's hooked. He loves her. If she isn't in bed at bedtime, he goes and gets her. He cooks her meals. He buys her toys. He plays with her. He gives her belly rubs and tells her she's "Daddy's girl". The boat still needs maintenance. :p |
My SO wanted a bigger dog at first...something he could play ball with and take running. He really likes bull terriers....BUT.....the boys have totally grown on him and he loves his little Ricky....and these guys have made him like other little dog breeds as well. He really wants an affenpinscher. I think he thought having a little dog was too "girly" or "feminine" ....but when we first got Ricky, some guy came up to him at the pet store and wanted to take a picture to show his girlfriend. Prince and I just stood around the corner and watched the two guys talking about their little dogs!! LOL!! Personally, I don't think my SO would mind if I brought 10 more home!!. He's really good with them too, which I didn't expect. I thought I'd have to do all of care taking for them, but, he will feed them, walk them, and he helps me bathe and groom them. He even brushes Ricky every day. His only complaint is my excessive spending and worrying about my boy's health and their food. He says I go overboard...which is a matter of perspective I guess...but since it's my money he really doesn't have too much say in how it's spent...and I admit that I am a slight doggie hypochondriac. I can't help it...I just want to make sure the boys are living the best life they possibly can. |
Congrats , your new baby is so adorable.. No , my husband was not against getting a Yorkie. |
your baby is DARLING, congrats It's not so much my husband did not want a yorkie, he just did not want another dog. So when I got my Kirby the one before Lola, he was like no, no more dogs. Well he is crazy for his offshore boat which I hate and once before he told me when I was telling him I don't want to buy another boat, that he WILL always have a boat. So after thinking about it for a week, I told him, well Kirby is MY boat, and I will always have a dog if I want one, just like you will always have your boat. That ended that and now I will never have an argument with him over this again. I will say he loves Lola but I do all the work with her, just like he does with his boat:D |
DH did not want a small dog in general and a yorkie in particular. His belief was that they were yappy, wussy dogs. Then he met Rhett and it was love at first sight. Scarlett and Cali were easy after that . |
You're baby is adorable. My husband didn't mind me getting a yorkie at all. In fact, he's the reason I ended up with 3. When I called him at work to tell me Pixie's breeder called and said she wanted to make me an offer I couldn't refuse to get Dixie (RIP) he said why aren't you on your way to get her. When an elderly lady I met had a stroke I brought her elderly male yorkie, Nikki home. So for 2 1/2 years I had 4 yorkies. Sadly my husband passed last year but bless his heart he never said a word about my yorkie obsession. In fact, he called Pixie his perfect Pixie. |
Lol lol @ the stories and thanks I think she's pretty darn cute too! I'm already plotting world domination with her by my side or at the very least domination of the PTA :devils2:...@ Kendra so I see great minds think alike. I used the "human baby" scenario too and it was smooth sailing from there once hubby realized he could end up with a daughter instead of another son(he does not want to be one of those "sit on the porch with a shotgun on date night" kind of dads). |
1 Attachment(s) My man was not so much against it but he would make fun of those people who would dress their tiny pet and parade it in their purse. That is till we got Gus and I had all kinds of jerseys and boy t's for him. It's was funny when we were going anywhere and he would ask if Gus was ready. And he loved when Gus would jump on his lap to cuddle. Especially on cold days. Now that we have Leiloni he is absolutely in awe with her and he will be the first to admit it. He shocked the heck out of me one day when he came home with some tiny hair bows for her. He even knew what kind to get. Here is a snuggle pic of Tim and Gus,,,,, I have yet to capture a shot of him and Leiloni,,, oh but I will. |
@ Patti my regards to the loss of your husband :love-hug3 and also for the loss of your GS @Bobswench :love-hug3 |
I told DH that I was going to take Blazer and DH told me he11no. I brought Blazer home anyway and, after a while, DH fell in love with him! |
@Latuya now that ma'am is a cute photo! Gus looks so comfy snuggled up with his daddy |
@ AngelFae now that sounds like something I would do lmao. " Oh you told me no? How's that workin out for ya?" Lol |
DH didn't want a small dog at all. We went to pick Mandie up as MY anniversary present. I drove home..Mandie sat in DH's lap. They've been inseparable ever since. To hear him tell it, Mandie is HIS dog. :D |
My DH was against having another dog..but when we went to see Dooney, he couldn't resist the cuteness. Now he loves him and treats him like a baby....yorkies are so special. |
My BF wasn't against of having one because it was going to be a small dog but because we lived separately and in studio apartments for students. My love for dogs convinced him to get one and that's when we got Nena :) After a year we decided to live together and moved to a bigger place. I wanted a second dog but he thought Nena was more than enough. 2 years after that he surprised me days before my B-Day by telling me that we can get a 2nd dog :D He too is a dog person and Nena is more attached to him. She sleeps next to him, he picks her up so she can sleep on his lap etc. :) |
Mark really wasn't against me having a yorkie...he just didn't think it was a good idea at the time....we now have three....Jersey was my birthday present from him last year....our first Raelle...he tells everyone she is his baby....um no she is mommies girl! LOL! She cant get a moments peace from him....he is always looking for her, even removes her from my lap so he can get some lovin! Don't get me wrong he loves all of them, but Raelle remember he didn't think getting her was a good idea! |
My hubby absolutely loves our babies. He has never once said no. I guess that is why I have had a total of 11 over the years. |
When we lost our Chloe (Maltipoo) in February, my hubby said, no more dogs. She was my 1st and we had her since she was 8 weeks (she was 13 when she passed). I cried every day, not continuously, but everyday. After about 6 weeks I started looking at puppies online, rescues etc. and after about a week or so of looking Enzo popped up on Kijii - Family needed to rehome moving out of country & husband in that family did NOT like him! I fell in love instantly!!! Long story, but after I showed DH his pic and told him his situation, we contacted the seller and 3 days later drove the 4 hrs to Calgary to get our little man. Enzo went straight to DH and never moved... The rest is history, he's daddy's little man and he sleeps right next to Daddy every nite... I try and coax him over to my side but he stays right next to DH. He saved me from going into a severe depression and has been a great addition to our family <3 |
My husband doesnt hate dogs but didnt want one either (for cleanliness purposes). So we argued until i got my first dog (kobe)...i thought he wont agree to a second one.. well i just got my second one anyway (zoey) and now he loves zoey! ( i dont see him as buying clothes for her though lol) |
My DH first thought he wanted a big dog, so we lived in a tiny apartment with a Rhodesian Ridgeback, (115 lb 6 month old puppy). She was a sweetie but while we were on vacation the person I had watching her, decided to give her away to someone else. After that we both agreed we wanted smaller dog. First was the dachshund, Beanie who actually would alert me about my migraines before I had any symptoms. Then we got Ginger (she is now 11 years old), and her 7 year old pup Gustoff (my husband's grandma named him, but we call him Gus) and Bailey our 1 year old Morkie. We both love the little dogs, because we can travel with them and they bring so much love and happiness. |
My husband was completely against getting a dog. I was mourning the loss of my grandmother and my birthday had just passed, so I started searching for a puppy. I found Couver and brought him home. My husband was in love with him by the very next day :) |
It's amazing how addictive they are. Someone once told me yorkies are like potato chips. You can't jut have one!! That statement totally rings true for me!! They totally have filled a void in our household for both my SO and I since we don't have any human children. Now, I can't imagine my life without them. My mom ever refers to them as her grand dogs!! LOL!! |
Well Seeing as my mom isn't on yorkie talk ill speak for her LOL! We started out always having just two dogs. I Had a pickagenese (sp) (she was VERY MEAN!) and a Sheltie. My mom had always wanted a dog that didn't shed, so I convinced her to get a yorkie. We ended up with Star and Shadow. (sisters) They wanted NOTHING to do with my dad seeing as the pickagenese was my dads dog. She was very aggressive to anyone or anything that got near him. even if it was me or my mom. Last fall we lost Sheeba (pickagenese) to a teenage kid ( hit and run, left her in the road, my dad found her) He was DEVISTATED! Ironically the girls melted his heart and they follow him EVERYWHERE! they even sit on the back of the couch and whine and cry until he pay attention to them. Me and my mother decided to get a boy yorkie .. unfourtunatly for my dad we couldn't decide between two males.. so we got both of them.. (thunder & Lightning ) Thunder is my moms baby and Lightning is mine. (the sheltie is mine as well, shes my baby since I was 13, im 25 now) All of them are attached to my dad. He refused to get attached to them for WEEKS! until he started taking naps on the couch and he would wake up to a herd of yorkies on him. Hes gotten to where he has to share everything with them. His drinks, his food, his blankets. its so funny to watch. Retired built navy guy always carrying around a yorkie or having four of them follow him everywhere. |
When I met Neil in 1997 he wasn't a cat lover (wouldn't hurt one but never wanted to live with one) and preferred bigger breeds like Labradors and German Shepherds. Well.....16 years later we FOSTER old cats in their final weeks/months for a local charity and it is Neil who is now saying we will NEVER be without a cat!!!! :D And, over the past few years, he started to realise that after losing my whippet Tina in August 2008, that I really wanted a small breed like a Chihuahua. Last year we were offered two chi's through breed rescue and Neil was prepared to take me to the other side of the UK to pick them up. Unfortunately, after a long chat with the lady who was fostering them, we came to the conclusion that we couldn't have them because they HATED cats :( The fosterer had cats and had had to keep the cats and dogs in separate parts of the house and on the odd occasion the chi's saw the cats they would go into barking hysterics....which would NOT go down well with our neighbours unfortunately. So I decided to save up for a puppy as then she could grow up with our cats :) Then, a few months ago, Neil was at work at the opencast site he is a security guard on and was chatting to one of the guys who drove the giant dumper trucks. This guy was in his 60's and 6ft tall....and took his TINY yorkie to work with him :p She would curl up on the seat next to him in his truck and once Neil met her and had a chat with the guy about the breed he just fell in love :D He came home and said ''Why don't we get a yorkie?'' I was gobsmacked as had never expected Neil to consider the breed (I'd felt he was only 'tolerating' my wish for a Chihuahua) but no, he's adamant he wants a yorkie :D He is even saying he will take her on nightshift with him  I told him ''I don't think so!!!!'' :animal36 Over the past week or so he has even suggested getting TWO puppies so they'll be company for each other on the rare occasion we are out (currently 3pm - 6pm on Saturday afternoon!). I'm actually VERY tempted as I've had two pups from the same litter before (Buster & Heidi - jack russell terriers in 1990) and despite everyone saying they would be double trouble they were actually EASIER than a single puppy  Perhaps it may be worth saving for a couple of months longer so we CAN get two and then Neil can experience the joy of puppies as he's only ever known older dogs :) |
:) 1 Attachment(s) David and I moved into a new place in April and he knew that I REALLY wanted a puppy for my college graduation. I had a yorkie for 14 years growing up and I wanted another little guy. David disagreed and wanted a big dog. I made a deal with him that if he went to the breeder with me and did not fall in love with a yorkie, that we would leave and look at other breeds. Well, well, well... David picked up Bentley and instantly fell for him. 4 days after I graduated, we brought our little baby home :) He is definitely a Momma's boy but loves Daddy just as much! Here is a pic of David and Bentley cuddling after Bentley's surgery. |
Pinktini is ADORABLE!!! I came into my marriage with my boys, and my DH came into our marriage with his 'skin' boys. I'll tell you, my fur-boys.... WAY EASIER than skin kids! LOL DH had to take us as a package! :) |
This thread is so funny to me- I had to lobby & campain pretty hard for almost 2 years before I broke Mr. Faboosh down enough to get a dog. He always said we'd get a dog "eventually" & that I'll get my yorkie "someday" preferrably after I finish school. He blamed it on the time involved and monetary cost. A few short months after getting Billi & Mick (my bf) is the BIGGEST sucker for her! He gets upset that she doesn't cuddle with him when I'm around & loves to play with her and give her kisses. It's pretty cute- she's got him wrapped around her lil paw now. :p |
Irina was 'au fait' with Yorkshire terrorists as her daughter has two. I've always loved them anyway as they're such incredible little characters. Crystal now runs the place! :) |
