Biewer Yorkie -- I love the little Biewer - who wouldn't?? Correct me if I'm wrong. From what I have read - it appears to me that the little Biewer is a color mutation that showed up in a Yorkie's litter(s) and was recognized and appreciated to be a beautiful little dog. Then, fortunately, this wonderfully colored little dog was selectively bred to maintain and produce more of the same. The Biewer does not meet the Yorkie color standards, but with careful breeding and care, the Biewer has developed color standards of its own. We purists are just going to have to step aside and realize that we have another little guy who is fast making his mark on the world. Haven't seen a Yorkie lover yet who didn't look at the little Biewer without saying, "Isn't he beautiful!" My hope is that the delightful little Biewer will soon be recognized as a little breed unto himself and be able to hold his own in any dog show in the world. And - who do we have to thank for this colorful little guy? - the Yorkie, of course! Is the Biewer a Yorkie???? Yes he is, but also he's different! I like to think of the Biewer as a darling, colorful, little dog that the Yorkie invented. Carol Jean |
Well said. I happen to have loved them ever since seeing one for the first time. They are stunning, colorful, and I like things that aren't always the "norm" :) |
Cute post Carol Jean..you are right on track! Let me just ad this reminder..They orginated from Germany because Germany does not Register this color. The AKC will register the colors, but it's not acceptable or showable. |
I agree, they are adorable. Don't think anyone argues that. Purists step aside? Not sure what that means. This explains the controversy. The Biewer is not currently recognized by any of the major international kennel clubs. |
"Purists" are people who never like to see any changes or deviations occur. They adhere steadfastly to their breed's standards and have little patience for change. ---And, of course, more often than not - this is a good thing. I am well aware of all the controversy regarding the little Biewer - but feel that much of this will be history before long. I believe this little dog will be recognized on his own one day - and how he got into this world will be become only a matter of interest - not a topic for controversy. Again - I believe the Yorkie invented a delightful, colorful, different, little dog. Biewers I do like the Biewers myself. I only have one and since she was so much more "active" then my "perfect" girls (LOL)I sent her to the co-owner so she could have other active Yorkies to play with in a big yard. It does not mean I am not very fond of them..infact I think they are gorgeous additions to the breed. |
I love them too! They are like little ever ready bunnies, they just keep going and going... This is my personal opinion,but I think that if ever the AKC does accept them, it's going to be as a seperate breed all it's own, because of the fact that they don't even allow their own AKC Parti's to be shown under Yorkshire terrier. That's ok with me, I love them for what they are, not what they will be... |
This may be a stupid question. But here goes. About 22 years ago my mother-in-law got my stepsons and my sister-in-law yorkies at the same time. The boys was the regular standard color that the majority of us have. But Mary's was what I thought was called a party colored. Are they the same as the Biewers? As soon as I find a picture of him I will take a picture of it with my digital camera and post it here. I was just curious. If anyone knows please feel free to enlighten me. Thanks. |
Well in looks they are similar, it's the ancestory that makes them different. They both have the white gene, it's just that the Biewers have been developed a little further for specific markings. Parti's on the othere hand haven't because Yorkshire Terrier breeders do not like the "off" color so they don't pursue it. I'm sure that many years ago, breeders would probably cull the white ones out as to not let it be known that they have it in their line. Let's all agree, call them Biewers if they have German ancestry behind them, Parti's if they don't... |
Great post Carol Jean! I had a Yorkie when I was a little girl and from then on would always find myself buying things with Yorkies on it. Unfortunately, we were a military family and when we got orders to move to England, my mom decided it would be best to find our little guy a new home rather than to take him and make him go through the 6-month quarantine as we knew it would be too hard on him (we have seen dogs lose all of their hair from stress). From that time on I vowed that I would have at least one once I got older......then as I got older I decided that I would like to one day breed them. Well, as I was looking into breeders to get my first Yorkie, I came across the Biewers and just fell in love. Long story short, my husband and I got Lilly and couldn't be happier. They are so beautiful and full of life....just amazing little dogs! :) |

I have found more times than not, That either you just love them or that they(people) have no interest and think the Biewers are ugly. I also have many breeders asking me questions and are waiting to see what the Biewers are going to do in America, and to see if they are going to bring health issues. I personally love mine... :D Planning to educate people that are willing to learn and promote the Breed as intended. I am in for the long haul....lol. :p |
Sue, In response to your post, I think that you are doing a great job trying to educate others about this breed. I try to keep an eye out for your posts, especially when discussing the Biewers, and try to soak up all of the information that you throw out there. Keep up the great work! :D |
