Jasper is getting neutered and having his dental done today. DH is on the way to the vet with him now. I have had plenty of dogs and cats spayed or neutered in my adult life. But none have ever been as small as Jasper. I'm so scared. :cry: i ask for thoughts and prayers of my little Jasper today. Thanks everyone.

Prayers for Jasper...I am sure he will be just fine. Try to keep yourself busy so that you don't worry too much. It will all be over with before you know it and your little guy will be back in your arms! :)

I know how worried and lonely you are right now. I, too, will be happy to hear when your precious little boy is back with his mom who loves him so much.

Thank you all so much! It helps that I know all of you truly do understand. I was hoping he weighed 4 lbs. But nope only 3.5. Maybe the neutering will help him gain a pound or two.

We're right there with you sweating it out too, knowing exactly how you feel once the deed is started. I've had dentals, spaying, neutering on dogs for years but last year when I walked out of the vet after turning Tibbe over to them, I bawled. Every year and every time I do that. Your baby Jasper is in good hands and the staff well-versed in what they do but I'll be praying right along with everybody else until we hear he's awake and okay. Prayers for Jasper. Try not to stress about it, I know it is easier said than done. He is in good hands and neuters are a very simple fast surgery. I will be sending good vibes to the both of you.

There is no way to avoid worrying when they go under, so just know we are there with you as you wait for the call from the vet saying he's out and ok. It is such a relief to get that call.

It's hard not to worry about your little ones when they are away from you. Sending you wishes for an easy and fast recovery for Jasper.

I spoke with the vet and Jasper did great. Because he only weighs 3.5, he wants to keep him overnite. I told him I want him to come home. So,we agreed that I will call back at 3:00 to see how he is doing. Noone will be there overnight. I will stay up all night if necessary.

He also took out some teeth. I don't know how many.

I am with you...not a chance in hell will my pups stay in a place where there is no one at night. If my vet feels my pups need hospitalization she knows that she is to refer them to another facility that has 24 hour care.

I absolutely side with you on this one. I brought all my pups home at the end of the business day after their surgeries and then returned with them as soon as the vet opened the next morning. No way I was going to leave my little ones alone over night. Plus, I think they just rest better in familiar surroundings after surgery.

I don't understand why they would think its better to give him meds to sleep all night with no staff there instead of being at home where he WILL be watched all night. I've read other threads with this issue. But the vet works for me. If he feels Jasper needs to be in a hospital, then we will take him to one in Memphis. Otherwise, he is coming home today.

I do think he'd feel better at home. Just like us humans do.

Glad to hear he came through ok. I also would not leave him overnight alone.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, the vet said that Jasper did great. The vet had wanted him to stay the night because of his size. When I called at 3:00, Jasper was up and walking around. So...I didn't have to punch anybody out to get my baby! Or call Lynzy to do it for me!! :eek::rolleyes:

They removed 7 teeth and said that most of his pain will come from that more than the neuter. And, yes I have his teeth. DH thinks I'm nuts. :p When we got home he peed forever it seemed like. It seems like any pet I've had will hold it until they get home. But anyway... after that he ate really well. I only gave him half of his usual portion because I want to make sure his tummy will be alright. I figure I will feed him again in an hour if he is awake. He is sleeping right now.

They used a laser for his surgery and he has sutures that will need to be removed in about 10 days. No E cone either. He is to take Amoxicillan twice per day. Metacam once per day for pain. They said that he already had his dose for today. But, he had a lot done. What if he is in pain tonight? Does this sound right?

Oh and all of his bloodwork was within the normal ranges on everything. I apologize for rambling. Just so happy and relieved to have my boy home. I cried with worry this morning. Now I could cry from relief. :)

Funny about the teeth, I'm a saver too. A few months ago BF found a Rx bottle in the pantry and asked me what it was for. EEkk it was baby teeth I had forgotten. Now he really thinks I'm a crazy dog lady, haha.

Glad to hear that Jasper pulled through his surgery okay! It's also nice to know that he won't have to wear one of those Elizabethan collars. About the Metacam, it is given only once daily--I'm sure that Jasper will be okay through the night. Give us an update in the morning!

Thank you for relieving my mind in regard to the pain medicine. It is hard not to worry sometimes. He seems to be doing good. He tried to take off after Piper, the cat, earlier. Good sign. :)

I laughed at the Lynzy comment. You can always use me as a back up. :D

Watch him closely...if he licks his incision it will get infected. Some never bother their incisions and don't need an E-collar, but most do...so just be careful!

So glad he is home with you and that all went well! :)

As for meds, I personally don't think Metacam is enough. I just spoke with a friend whose pup was spayed and the vet put her on Rimadyl. I asked her to ask her vet if she would only take Motrin for a hysterectomy. Sheesh.

My vet always prescribes Tramadol and Metacam....or Bupranex and Metacam after spays and neuters. Maybe the pups don't show pain but that does not mean there is no pain.

I give pain meds for 3 - 4 days after these surgeries. I don't want to think a pup could be in pain. :(

Jasper is whinny and trembling. He hasn't had pain meds in 9 hours. Will it hurt to give him a 1/2 dose?

I'm glad Jasper made it through safe and sound! How often does the prescription say to administer his pain meds?
