3 yr. Rabies Vaccine Hi All. I have what I think is an fairly easy question but I've yet to find an answer. Is it safe to give a 6 lb. Yorkie a the 3 yr. rabies vaccine? Our 2 yr. old "Halle" is due for hers in Nov. & "Spike", our 11 mo. old will be due for his in April. Thanks. |
The 3 year and the 1 year vaccine are identical. Same strength, same dosage, same vial. I was floored when I found that out. I even had one vet tell me that the 1 year boosters were required in our county. Some easy research told me that the 3 year was allowed (we switched vets after that). They still need to have the 1st booster at about 16 months, but then if you ask for the 3 year certificate, they won't need it again for 3 years. |

The Rabies shot is the same, whether it is given annually or every three years. It is generally safe, but if you are worried about a reaction, you can stay at the vet for half an hour to be sure. Our two basset hounds had a very bad reaction to the rabies vaccine. They are both exempt from taking them by order of our vet. So far our other dogs haven't had any reaction but we still worry about them. We usually stay around the vet for about an hour just to make sure. |

They get the first shot at about 4months. The second comes 12 months later(-at about 16 months)from that point it can be every 3 years. |
I find it interesting that you all are saying the 1 year and the 3 year are the exact same med & dosage..no difference. Read this article in Alabama where a vet, Dr. Karen Sheppard, says they are not the same: Pets in Alabama may get 3-year rabies shot | al.com Is it possible, that they have changes since 2009 (when this article was originally written; although it was updated in 2010)? Where is a resource that states the med/dosage for 1 year v. 3 year to compare? |

I had no idea I even had a choice in Alabama until recently. And, just now found out I've had that choice since I've had him (in 2009 in Alabama). Not happy at all. Nope. That vet lost my Mandie's business very soon after getting her because they have no clue about small dogs..it was just clear to me. But Shelby has never had any issues and seems to like their kennel for boarding. After his last vet visit for a hot spot that I basically had to treat on my own for their lack of care and this new info, I'm just out of their door for good. Sheesh. |

My county just changed this year to a three year licensing practice to coincide with the 3 year rabies shot. Unfortunately, ZoE had her three year shot last year, so I still had to buy a one year license this year, and will have to buy a one year license next year, then the following year when she gets her 3 year rabies shot again, I can buy her a 3 year license. |
In most states a vet can write a letter stating that the faccine cannot be given. The dog can then be licensed; however, if the dog bites it is still treated as an unvaccinated dog. |
