New Yorkie Owner Question.. HELP! Hello everyone, I have a question. I just inherited a Yorkie from my parents, and she is 6 months old. My parents never take her outside, because they claim that it's just too cold, and since she's so small, etc etc etc, and they can't handle the cold. She goes on "pee-pee pads" in the house. Is this a bad thing? It has kinda grossed me out to an extent, although since she is only around 3 pounds, it isn't like she goes to the bathroom in large amounts or anything. But that's how they have trained her, and she goes on the pads, ALWAYS. Are there ANY other Yorkie owners out there who do this same thing with their Yorkies? Thanks for any and all imput! |
Yes. There are lots of us who use peepee pads. My family thinks I'm crazy - but it works for me! It can be really cold for our little ones and I prefer to keep my 2 inside during the winter. Don't feel strange for doing it! Some people even use litter boxes. It's really up to you! Welcome to YorkieTalk!! |
We use pee pee pads, diapers and take them out....they are probably totally confused :p It works for us though...just a matter of preference on how you want her trained. I am not crazy myself about having the pee pee pads laying on the floor. I'd love to see pictures of your little one :) WELCOME to YT! |
Boy are you lucky :D a young Yorkie that is already pee pad trained  I don't know the percentage but a high number of Yorkie owners use this method. It is great in the wintertime when it is so cold and because you can never let your little one go outside by herself it helps year round  . They also have small bladders so if you have to be gone they are not going on your carpet. Sounds to me that life is good for you :aimeeyork |
I plan on training my yorkie on pee pee pads. If you want to train him to go outside, maybe try slowly moving the pee pee pad closer and closer to the door. Maybe that will gradualy get him to go outside. |
You can gradually change her training habits and put a coat on that baby when it's cold - my girls LOVE being outside in their yard and if I never let them out they'd be so sad...but if I didn't have a yard - I'd probably have them using a pad - it's no biggie cause yorkies are so small - I used the same method BrianJoy just mentioned ...now both go outside but they started on the pads when young. |
If you're not confused enough now, mine goes outside during the day. At night and in inclement weather, she uses pads in the attached garage. However, I always leave down some pads in the house in case we are gone or can't go to the door when she needs out. :D |
Thank you so much, to everyone, for their quick responses. I have actually been reading many posts on this site, and learning a lot, quickly! I'm glad this isn't a "weird" thing afterall! My mom said that a friend of hers has had her Yorkie for 5 years, and that he goes on pee pads all the time, and only goes outside when it's warm. So, all in all, it's not much different than having cats inside and having a litter box for them! And after reading other threads on here, it can be an advantage when your not at home all-day, everyday. At least she has my 2 cats to keep her company. Does anyone have cats in the house, along with their Yorkie? (I've had my newly-adopted Yorkie for only 3 days) And I keep worrying that she might get into the cat's litter box, etc etc....ICK! |
I'm training mine to use the litterbox! It is going... slowly.... He also uses the peepads! |
I've read of some yorkies who have gotten into the kitty's litter box and snacked, so you will need to be wary. ;) |
your doing ok.. my lexi only goes on wee pads and she is 9 months old. thats the way i trained her, 1 thing, cause im gone most of the day, and would not want her to hold it that long... so wee pads is the way for us.. |
i put pee pads in the litter box instead of litter and thats were my maggie goes but i wouldent let yor baby go were the cats do becouse most dogs will eat cat poo yuck |
My yorkie Lilly also uses Pee pads and I was just like you at first, the thought of it grossed me out (but then again, I am a clean freak haha) but I am really glad we did, she caught on soo fast and is fully trained. We have lots of dogs around and she is soo small it would scare me to have her outside all the time. Since they are so small they don’t go a whole bunch so it’s really not too bad. |
I think that it is great that she is using pads to go on! When I tried to train Gidget with those things, she would just rip them to shreds! Congrats on your new furbaby! :D Can't wait to see some pics! |
