I found out my groomer uses a crate dryer... Have you guys heard of this? Instead of hand drying dogs there is a crate that some groomers use which dries the dogs. When I was looking into possibly switching groomers, a few articles popped up about dogs who were injured in one. When my assistant dropped Teddy off for his grooming (she helps me get things done when I am at the salon) she asked if they have one and they said: Yes, but we usually hand dry him. I want to put the word usually in caps because I am upset:-( They said they would never put him in there again, but I am very upset...I don't trust them now. Has anyone had an experience with this? |
Cage dryers should be banned! I would look for a new groomer right away for Teddy. There is a thread here about a Yorkie who was severely injured in one. I would link the thread, but the pictures gave me nightmares. :( Cage dryers are also not good for eyes. |
I agree. Cage dryers are a very scary thing for the dogs to be in too! And the dog that was injured in one was literally being cooked alive! Change groomers immediately! Unless you or your assistant stays with your dog there the entire time, there is no way to truly believe them that they are 100% never ever going to use it again on your dog. Or just groom yourself. It's not that hard. I do all mine myself. Or hire a mobile groomer to come to you so you can watch. |
I don't have any experience, and after a few grooming horrors with my babies at the Rainbow Bridge, I have done all of my own grooming for many years. There was a thread on here a few years ago that I learned about these dryers. I shared the story with every dog owner I knew personally. It completely horrified me. The photo in this thread is difficult to bear, so I'd advise not to open it. This story really awakened me to this. I don't think I'd trust your groomer after this. Perhaps they monitor the dogs when using them, but they really scare me now. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...n-graphic.html |

I am so sad that he has ever had to experience such a horrible thing. I would like to get it banned, I wonder how I can start? My boyfriend agreed that he is never gong back there. Sweet Ted.... |

I agree that they are not optimal and can be dangerous if used incorrectly. I'd choose to avod groomers who use them. ...but depending on temp of air, room to move, etc. your pup may have geen just fine and not traumatized. |
This type of set up....cage dryers....has always struck me as a "laundramat groomer"....you can actually accomplish the same thing at home...just throw the dog in the washing machine and then take 'em out and throw 'em in the dryer!!! I HATE those things! |

I always admire your beautiful Katie. I didn't know that you actually do your own grooming. I am a hair colorist by trade, and years ago I used to cut hair too. If I had some good articles and such, I imagine that I could learn to d it too. I actually usually fix his haircuts anyway, I have just never attempted to do one from start to finish. Do you have any favorite articles, or recommended reading? |

Cage dryers were banned in NY last fall, and I believe they have been banned in a couple of other states. The Humane Society Of New York |

I too would not use myself a crate dryer, nor take any of my dogs to a groomer that does. I have not seen horror stories, and I won't open that link. In fact other than my breeders (for my two breeds) I trust no-one to leave my dogs alone with for grooming. I essentially for day to day grooming groom my own, for show grooming, as sadly I lack the talent for that, I have been blessed with my breeders to mainly do for me. I actually lust after a Stand Dryer, which is a different kettle of fish from a crate dryer. But they are an upright dryer, you can direct the air flow to different parts of the dogs body as you slicker the hair dry. They are quite expensive, and as I have count em, three high velocity dryers, one mini, one CC, one double duty XX, my husband looks askance at me, when I mention the stand dryer. I am hoping to find one on sale, or a "rehome" dryer. With if we get a new show lass, I could probably make a case for it, of course after I get that dog bather stainless steel tub installed :-) But I am also lusting after a very safe high end crate, which seems to retail at about $1000 for the small ones... Thank God for hubby who indulges me lots.... |

Poor Teddy!! I hope they haven't put him in one of those torture cages!! I certainly don't blame you for looking for another groomer. I believe that you won't take him to just anyone either. You'll find the right one for both of you. Hang in there!! |
Thank you so much to everyone for responding. I can't even tell you how much it means. I feel very fortunate to be able to come on here and have people understand how I feel about Teddy. This is a special place. I will make sure he is never in a crate dryer again. |
beyond disturbing, really...beyond. I'm calling in the morning...if they have them there I swear I will flip ship all over them. |

Never heard of such thing but sadly not surprised. I'd like to put them in a caged dryer and see how much they enjoy it. I think that's just as bad as those "doggie washing machines" Japan came up with... I don't believe the fad made it to the States (thank goodness) but I felt so bad for those dogs that had to endure it there... I think I learned about that on YT... I don't get it.. If you care for your pet enough to take him/her to the groomers, why subject them to something like that?! |
My groomer does not use these, thank goodness. Her grooming station has viewing windows throughout, anyone and everyone sitting in the waiting room can see everything she does. She treats Winston the way I treat Winston...she's very loving and kind to all animals...I know in my heart she really cares. She moved from one vet office to another and I followed her. I love my groomer, hope she never retires!!! I may have to follow her...lol |
I don't want to look at anymore pics. Are these the cages that have the dryer hoses attached to them? |
Oh wow. Just seeing this thread. Poor Teddy! I had no idea cage dryers even existed. It's a good thing you learned about this before your little girl came home. Glad you found a new spot!! |
