She looks all Yorkie to me and weight has nothing to do with whether a dog is Yorkie or Silky. Your pup doesn't even have any of the characteristics of a Silky. |
P-Nut's 11lbs and we always get asked if he's a silky. Like yours, he looks all yorkie, I think people are just confused by his size. |
This is a REAL pet peeve of mine.....ask your groomer point blank, WHAT she is basing her pronouncement on? Go in there with the silky breed standard thoroughly memorized so you can SHOW her, point by point, using your baby how YOUR baby differs from a silky! When groomers and vets make such sweeping statements, based on nothing but size, it makes me crazy! EDUCATE her!! |
She looks like a yorkie to me. She is a cutie |

Had I known the difference at the time, believe me I would have educated her. I just never gave it any thought at all that Coco could be a silky. Her previous owner said she was a yorkie and is AKC registered yorkie. The groomer told me that with a yorkie they could still register with AKC as a silky. I was completely ignorant of this. But, I definitely getting myself educated for the next time it comes up. I'm pretty sure I wont be taking her back to this groomer. The lady is really close to where we live and she's been grooming for a while. So, I figured she should be good. I was not really impressed with her grooming. It wasn't bad but just not as good as I had expected. She didn't use any electric clippers she told me she used scissors on Coco. Not sure why she did that. I did tell her NOT to shave Coco anywhere on her body. I do not like them shaved around their eyes and I didnt want her shaved around her bottom. They wanted to because they said it was sanitary. Well, I told them i don't care for the shaved butt look at all. Besides, i know how to use baby wipes when needed.:) |
Thank You Thank you all so much for the responses. I love Coco whether she is yorkie or silky just the same. But, I'm glad to know she is definitely yorkie. I love this forum it has truly been a blessing in educating me in the "yorkie world". :thumbs up:yorkiesar:mademyday |
Could she maybe of been speaking of her (silky) coat? I think some are confused when a groomer says silky about the coat. |

I agree with the others-she looks like pure yorkie to me. One of the most distinctive features of a silky, to me, besides the shape of the head & muzzle it the length of the body. Your baby looks to have the perfectly square yorkie body in the 1st photo, as well as the more rounded head & litle ears. My 1/2 silky 1/2 yorkie looks like a wiener dog body in a yorkie suit! He has little short legs and a L O N G body (8" tall x 12" long I think I remember from the last time I measured him) - And my groomer thought he was pure yorkie...go figure! |
Yorkie vs Silky 4 Attachment(s) If I'm able to, I will post a FEW online Silky pictures here, so everyone can compare theirs to a Silky. For the uneducated, the two breeds can often be confused with each other. I've had people ask me if Graysee is a Silky, also. |
Perhaps the groomer meant "silky" as in having a silky coat as opposed to a cotton coat? Based on those pictures that baby looks all Yorkie to me! |
Keno looks just like her, he's 16 lbs. AKC registered. |
