Interesting article about Royal Canin For anyone considering feeding their dogs Royal Canin, here's some reasons not to Beware of the New Anallergenic Dog Foods with Feather Meal |
OMG . What an AWESOME and convenient way to spin and market to the public that their dogs should eat a copius waste product called FEATHERS. I'm disgusted. And how 'bout this quote by the President of Royal Canin: “A Great Dane has a very different digestive tract from a Yorkie.” Um, on WHAT planet, Mr. Levy???? Does the Dane happen to have an extra organ or 2 there? 3 stomachs? The Dane has the same GI as the yorkie, but yes sir, it's indeed larger.. Wow. |
I am very distressed about this. I want to make sure this is a real interview and not some sort of scam. Many of us have used Royal Canin for years with good success. If it is true information it will cause a true uproar of protest. Currently I am feeding Fromm duck formula for Ginny Joy she can't do chicken or grain. Fromm reduced activity for my senior Rubin, Wellness for Abba he likes it and will eat it, and Royal Canin for the others ! |

I didn't know Snickers made dog food...the things you learn here...I also read this a.m. that Mrs. Mars is one of the top 5 richest women in the world...that's a whole lot of m&m's...I mean dogfood.... |
I always look at agendas.......this article is written by Dr.Becker....do ya think she has an agenda or perhaps she promotes something like.....organic food, or raw food or holistic food, etc?? I have fed RC with out problems for years....I trust them. MY concern with feathers is contaminated feathers getting into the formulas....However, I trust their quality control and quality management. I will continue to feed RC until there are scientific, EVIDENCED BASED issues / results, rather than competitors opinions, that become a problem that dictate to me that is no longer a product I trust. |
geez, what does it take for people to stop feeding bad food??? Making excuses to justify feeding it is even worse. I'm sorry, but this is so frustrating! |
You know the more I read about these pet food kibbles, the more I just want to say, hey everyone or most all, home feed, get a vet nutritionist on board to give you advice and just do the home feeding. My God with as little food as Yorkies eat how hard can it be? Most of us have freezers, and you can cook up one week or even two wk supply. Hey if you think that freezing food harms the nutrients etc, it is dead easy to make up 3days or so of food and keep it in the fridge. This multi billion dollar industry is only there, because they literally feed into the consumers desire for what is fast and easy to feed, the consumers belief which has been marketed to, that kibble is the best way to feed your dog. Some of us are old enough to remember a time when there was very little kibble around, only canned dog food, and most folks fed their dogs from table scraps or some combo of canned and table scraps. I don't know if those dogs were as healthy as the ones we have today. There are no statistics that would show that either way. |
So in the ingredient list, it'll be listed as 'Feather Meal'? or what, 'by-product meal' & not list the 'Feather' @ all?:thumbdown How cwazzie is that! |
Gemy.... right on!!! |
Dog Food Made From Feathers: A Win-Win for Royal Canin - Forbes not a scam here is the full article, Dr. Becker wouldn't publish comments on a scam |

I had no idea my mars bar had feathers in it either hahaha |

Agree, substituting proteins that are natural to a dog's diet with treated feathers to me is not at all encouraging and the fact there is no meat in the food, why don't you feed your dog plastic bags and shoe laces |

Absolutely Gemy, my friend is vegan, but after what she has seen with a few of us in our little Yorkie group who feed our dogs a raw diet, she's decided to start cooking for her Gracie instead of kibble |
I see it from another side having a dog who is at the end of the available proteins on the planet. This food was recommended for her. I contemplated it, but don't think she will do well on it because it is not hydrolyzed. I am opting for another solution which has kept her well and she's already outlived her prognosis by 7 years now. I didn't read the article because I saw who wrote it. Home cooking is great but few do it correctly. |

The original Article is not by Dr. Becker, it's from Forbes magazine, and that is just silly snobbery, she is a wonderful vet, doing wonderful things for all animals, she just has views you don't agree with. Some others may be interested. |
Well I am not a trained nutrionist, and I switched to raw food about 6 or more years ago. Because kibble was ruining my pups digestion. Liquid diarrehea on three or four different high quality kibble. With a big dog, that is a whole hell of a lot to clean up. And quite frankly I was very concerned. Year two I found a vet nutriontist but first year, I just researched on line. I feed a 40 40 20 diet. From the first week on, clear poops, no diarrehea. But week three was the watershed mark. No more diarrehea almost ever in 6+ years unless he gets into the garbage, and or, takes down the turkey on the counter:eek: He has white teeth, good breath, shiney coat, and quite frankly I don't need to worry about kibble recall. Due to our cross border travelling, I do let in some kibble, because I can't take raw dog food over the border, so until I get situated there is something they can eat. But now there is freeze dried raw, in pet food stores throughout most of the USA. I can google the city I am going to, and find out where I can buy it there. Now for show breeders who have bearded dogs, which I am sure they already know, but you can make little meatballs and hand feed them at meal times, so that meat doesn't get into the beard. But likely you will need to miniwash the beard/face, even if you wrap. I use a bacterial spray onto the beards after dinner even if hand feed. Then I brush out the big dogs beards. Takes about 5minutes per day if done daily. Usually by day three, I need to put them into the dog wash, for a more thorough wash of their head trimmings. And condition really really well the facial furnishing. I wash all my show dogs weekly and blow dry. Some would say this is too frequent, even my trainer says so. But hey every day, they are out and about, through rain, mud, grass, sand, lake water etc. I might go to 10days, but not much longer than that. |

Whoah, feather meal is disgusting! I've used it around the perimeter of my garden as a deer and elk repellent! It works well for that, but smells like the worst fart you ever smelled!!:eek::D |

Agendas.....motivating factors.....different points of view.....just hate to see people panic without cause, based not on ANY RESULTS FROM FEEDING THIS FOOD, but just from her opinion.....which MAY be accurate or MAY be false conjecture. No snobbery....just trust scientific, evidence based results, rather than opinion. The proof is in the pudding, so to speak! |

Here we go again....I am feeding RC and Blue; both kibble & can. |

Ahh yes, worms and feathers. Not digging the worm idea. Bugs are permitted in our food though. Paying scientists for ten years to develop this feather diet was likely far more expensive than just putting good quality jeat in the food. i don't think anybody including RC is telling owners of healthy pets to feed this. It fills a huge need for a very small number of dogs - dogs that cannot eat animal protein and do not do well on things like soy. It is for extreme allergies and intolerances - something that is understandably very hard to consider bc dgs are seen as meat eaters. Ellie does well on her soy pellets. uf she didn't we would absolutely consider this food if it was a bit lower in fat. And homecooking is a nice thought, but some can't even tolerate that. I could spend months looking for ingredients that cause Ellie no severe symptoms. Probem is...she would have severe symtoms in the process including life threateningones. |
