Kennel Cough HELP!!! Hi I'm new and my baby has kennel cough confirmed by a culture and sensitivity... She isn't getting any better with antibiotic and has been on it a while... Do any of you know an antibiotic that works to get rid of kennel cough? |
I'm sorry, I can't help. But Welcome. I just know you will get lots of great advice! Hope your baby feels better!! |
Thank you! |
It takes a while for kennel cough to completely go away. In fact, it can take a few months. Don't worry. The antibiotics are helping. It just takes some time for their little bodies to get rid of anything respiratory related. If it makes you feel better, you could give your vet a call to have her retested to see if her counts are lower. At least then, you'll know you're on the right track. I had a rescue with kennel cough that developed to pneumonia. It might be good to schedule a follow up appoinment if you're really concerned. If one of my babies has an infection that they can't kick, I request an antibiotic injection that lasts for 2 weeks. I'd have to look up the name of the medication. But if you ask your vet, I'm sure he'll know. Good luck!! |
you may need two or three bouts with the antiboitics. it took that many to rid mine of it the first time. good luck. |
She has been on cough tablets and has been on antibiotic for 2 rounds... She is starting to spit up a little when she coughs... Is this normal for kennel cough? My vets out of town till tomorrow but the spitting up scares me. |
Teresiana.. could you look up the injection meds.. I just feel she's been on antibiotic for a longgg time... actually I correct myself she's been on antibiotic for 3 rounds.. I just want it to go away... Thank Teresiana! |
Momo had KC when he was a pup & it lasted a long agonizing 3 months. He was on several different kind of antibiotics bc the kc just wouldn't go away & his cough kept getting worse. Finally what worked was upping the dose to 5ml from 1ml (if I remember correctly but 5ml I'm positive of). The vet reassured me that 5ml will be ok & it won't hurt him, I also double checked w/a cardiologist specialist we saw @ the time. I'm not recommending you up the dose, but please check w/your vet & talk about other options, like a different antibiotic or possibly upping the dosage if he doesn't show any improvements after 2-3 months. |
The antibiotic isn't used to "treat" kennel cough. It's a preventative measure against pnuemonia. Using a warm mist vaporizer will help or take puppy into a steam filled bathroom several times a day. Honey also soothes a raw throat. Some get over KC quickly and some it takes a bit more time. |
Mimimomo- What antibiotic finally ended up working for Momo? Thanks! |

I also put him in the bathroom when I took a shower so the steam will help w/his congestion & also had a humidifier going 24-7 for him. |

okay guys.. I talked to my vet and he is going to start gentamicin nebulization for her since this is considered a serious Kennel Cough Case and instead of the normal 3-5 days he will be doing it for 5-7 days... Has anyone ever heard of this or has this done to their baby? |

I took my two to see the vet this morning for what I suspected of kennel cough. And it was.. Luckily, she said it seemed like a very mild case. Magnus got Clavamox to be taken twice a day for 2 weeks. (Magnus is close to 16 lbs) Zoey got an injection. Convenia 80 mg/ml which is supposed to last 2 weeks. We'll be having a follow up in 10 days. They were both vomiting white foam and coughing like they needed to clear their throat ALL night. Neither had nasal discharge or anything weird. Other than those two symptoms, they are "normal". Eats, drinks, plays. The vet suggested humidifier or bringing them with me when I take a hot shower. She didn't want to give them cough suppressants b/c she wants them to cough out all the foam. But if it got worse, to call her and then she'll give the suppressants... Poor babies didn't get much sleep last night... I hope tonight would be better. Is there anything you can do to make them more comfortable? At the very least at night so they can at least get some good night sleep??? |
Hopefully the new medicine will clear it up. When I got Cali 8 years ago she had kennel cough and gave to to my older pom. It took over 3 months to clear them both up. The antibiotics were just a precaution to help prevent it from developing into pneumonia. |
Whenever she cant sleep I just hold her.. I dont know of anything else :( |
I seem to notice my two cough/vomit less when they're in a bit more humid environment. I live in Northern VA and it's sort of humid here right now. Since the AC is running in the house, it's not as humid as it's outside. I have the humidifier set up in their room and I'm hoping that'll help them be more comfortable... Have you tried that? I feel so bad every time they cough then vomit... They think they did something bad so they do the whole guilty look. I hope they get better soon. |
I hope your baby gets better soon |
