Have you found any helpful solutions yet? I know this thread has contained a lot of good humor, but I wanted to check in to see how things are actually going. Any better? |

dog Sounds like Sabu is doing the taboo. Anyway, it might be time for a little diaper on the female until Sabu can calm himself down. He is way too anxious and needs to knock off the behavior. I think I would consult a specialist in dog behavior and see what they say for such sexy dog behavior. He needs to chill out. |
This evening, I just started replying. If DH works from home, I'll not be able to continue my response. I'll have to wait till Thursday. Starlette |
What a great read before bedtime! Now all ill dream about is yorkies humping! ;) I hope you have found a solution to the "problem". The only dog humper I have is my 2 pound female who likes to hump our 6 pound male Morkies back... Now that's a hoot to watch! :D |
Starlette's Response Good evening everyone. First and foremost, I would certainly have to say my thread has caused lots of laughter. I'm glad it did! I categorized what you all have suggest with a possible comment from me. Second, my own comments and observations. I thought this would be helpful to the next person who is having the same issue, then that person can be directed to my thread. Would save alot of time and typing :) As for the recommended suggestions, I have been offered the following: - Canned air - Clapping your hands and saying "NO!" ANSWER: When Sabu goes to lick or mount then he stops, does give him a treat for listening. Giving Sabu a treat: I'll be giving him a treat by boiling chicken which I've done this afternoon. - No Bark Spray, Bark control (is a can of compressed air that makes a noise and releases a calming pheremone spray), and "Stop That" with a firm response ("No", "Stop it", or "Enough of that"). ANSWER: I'll do ASAP when I go Petco. Available at pet stores, Walmart, Amazon.com and many places. - Don't look at it as sex play, just as rude behavior. ANSWER: Yes, I'll have to change my mindset as stated. - Can of pennies. ANSWER: My word, do you know how many cans I'd have to have readily available? - By herding Julie into a corner and separating her that tells me he is trying to dominate her. ANSWER: For the most part Sabu doesn't "herd" her to a corner. Though he's continuously herds, he also gets on top of her. At the beginning, I thought he was herding Julie "away" from me as a matter of protecting me. I'm now believing that is now not the case. - Redirect him to a toy of something else that will keep his attention away from her. ANSWER: That is why I boiled chicken today as a attention getter and positive reward for negative actions. - I would put him in a time out in his cage. No three strikes rule, don't tolerance is the best solutions. If he wont stop the first time you correct him than separate them. ANSWER: Yes, I understand "time out". As already, I'm keeping them separated during the day until dinner time. - He need to join a PDA group / Perverted Doggies Anonymous. ANSWER: Should you know of such an organization in Denver, PLEASE send me more information! - Signal an OCD issue. Your vet might consider medication if it gets to this level. What is excessive? No firm line, but behavior to the exclusion of healthier behaviors, and maybe even UTI's, or reddened, irritated skin. ANSWER: Maybe Sabu has come to this point. Behaviors are some playtime, alot of herding, licking and humping. As I pointed out, he's been doing this behavior since Julie's grooming dated 6/14/2013 which is just about a month. - Bellyband for awhile will UNLEARN this behavior? When it gets bad I put pajama's on her and voila...calm.... ANSWER: What are bellybands??? I like the idea of some restraining device. - Sex ed. That with PDA group / Perverted Doggies Anonymous. ANSWER: It may very well get to this point! Never know. - Clapping and saying no. It may startle Sabu, but it really does not deter him from his actions. - While we associate the licking and the mounting as purely sexual acts, it doesn't translate that way in dog talk. It can be dominance or just how your pup likes to play. It may seem silly or odd to us, but to them it's normal. I remember someone telling me butt sniffing is a pup's FB. ANSWER: I can except this a viable statement. However, when this is done excessively, I'm having a hard time with this. As someone has stated, UTI. I can see a UTI happening with all this licking. Plus, I have to believe that her "area" feels raw at this point. QUESTION: What is FB? - Remove the offender from the room if he doesn't listen. ANSWER: I am doing that now as stated before. - it might be time for a little diaper on Julie until Sabu can calm himself down. ANSWER: Mom and I talked about this yesterday. She was even thinking of using a onsie. - Doing his actions in play. ANSWER: At first I'd agree. However, "naughty behavior" is getting out of control. Outside of "play", Sabu is licking her "area", humping, and the new one: Grabbing Julie by the tail and swishing her back and forth like a mop. There are times when she runs away and tucks her tail between her legs. - I would consult a specialist in dog behavior and see what they say for such sexy dog behavior. He needs to chill out. ANSWER: After I have exhausted many of the given suggestions, I'll set up an appointment with trainer that I went to to train Julie. __________________ What I've noticed so far: - First, this type of behavior didn't start till Julie was groomed for the first time 6/14/2013 is has been approximately one month exactly. - Second, I need to mention that Sabu was neutered befor he was adopted, which will be eight years this September. - Julie was spayed 7/22/2013 - Yesterday, I physically had to push Sabu away. Till I go out and purchase the suggested items, that is what I'm doing for now. By the way, I've NEVER treated Sabu like this. I don't like it. - Also as mentioned, I have separated them during the day, and switch them when Julie either needs to outside to get busy, or just to go outside. Sabu's treatment of her is not allowing her to be a puppy. Rather a playmate and more as someone to carry out his "naught behavior" which I'm beginning now to now believe. - I can tell when it's playtime. - Lastly, I did see Sabu's "lipstick" yesterday evening when I fed both of them. I was very surprised. Need I say more? Again thank you all for your responses. Starlette |
FB = Facebook Belly bands = piece of material that goes around a boy dog's belly to cover his peeper and stop him from marking. And I agree with you, I don't find humping an acceptable behavior at all. I know some fin it funny and allow their dogs to do it. Well it's not allowed in my house. I nipped that in the bud years ago when Kaji tried to hump my roomate's dog. When a no, and clapping to distract wasn't working anymore, physically removing the offender did. (Sometime it was Kaji humping, sometime it was my roomie's dog) while I understand it's all part of doggy talk, I don't like it or allow it. |

Starlette it is obvious, by your detailed post how serious a situation this is for you. I really hope that one of these solutions really works. Please keep us posted, and vent as needed it is obvious that this is quite the problem and very frustrating for you. I want to add that maybe putting PJ's on both will calm the situation as well...I always call them straight jackets! Your tenacity in finding a solution is admirable. |
How do you get PJ's for the summer? Reward for not humping: I don't seem to understand how this will work in Sabu's mind. I need some clarification. Several of you stated once he stops humping Julie when I've brought to his attention and then reward him. For me, I'm not sure how this is to work. Doing it this way sounds like I'm promoting humping in a way: Hump, hump, stop and then get rewarded for the act and stopping. Currently, I feel this is rewarding rather than a correction of behavior. Help me understand this type of correcting him. By the way, I'll also check into the belly bands (I never heard of that term) when I go to Petco here soon. Thank you. Starlette |
