Growling with tug-a-war? Anyone have a growler when playing tug. Joel is a loud growler, and when he plays tug with Milo he gets really loud and it sounds so violent lol. But he never gets aggressive. Do you think it's fine as long as he's being playful? Even when you drop the toy he puts it back in your hand so he is definitely playing. |

I think it's fine as long as he is playing :) Nena and Rufus do exactly the same when playing with their toys and when we play tug-o-war together ;) |

I'm curious to see some answers to this one. I've read from the beginning (well, my beginning lol) around here that you shouldn't let them play tug. I know I read that because it stayed with me. Maybe it was just someone's opinion but being my first day or two with a Yorkie, it stuck in my head..? Anyone? I thought that the reasoning for this is that they are terriers and this might bring out more of that terrier/fight attitude, but again..I am curious if I am even remembering right. I actually do let my 2 play tug but only because the one that growls (play growls) is Shelby and not Mandie. Sometimes though...I think I can see it escalating and I make them "cool it." |

That is a good question Terri. N&R don't play tug-o-war with each other, just with us but I would like to know if it's good or not. |

Blazer and Buddy play tug of war all of the time. Blazer is a growler when they do. |

Mine use to play tug of war and Pixie is a growler. Now they never use to get aggressive but since Pixie has turned 3 she and Daisy will fight over toys:( So I don't let play tug of war anymore. |

Tatiana is a growler when she plays. It is a playful growl because she never bites. It is like she is talking through her growl. She will walk beside me growling and looking at me because she wants me to sit down and play with her! As soon as I sit she wants to rough house and then she really starts the growling sound. I think this the way she communicates as she rarely barks. |

Toby's first vet told me never to play tug with him but wasn't too specific on the "whys" of it all. He no longer is our vet so I can't ask him why...but we mostly don't play it. |

Huey and I play tug all the time and he growls loudly the whole time. It is a different growl than his vicious "I'm about to take your am off" growl, for which he gets in trouble. (Verbal chastising and time out only, of course) |

Lexi growls when she plays tug of war. She growls when she plays with most things including my fingers. Usually when she bites my fingers (softly) and growls I give her a long kiss on the nose as I move my fingers around. I know she's thinking, 'Hey, I'm trying to look tough here and you're supposed to be scared'. I just can't resist her sweet pretending to be mean act. |

My Megan used to growl when we played tug-o-war, or she played with her favorite toy, a toilet paper tube with the ends pushed in. Megan never bit or was mean, she just acted like the little ratter that she was. Gina, my new puppy, is a growler/talker, and she growls while playing, she hasn't graduated to tug-o-war yet. Gina has a few toys, but her favorite is the toilet paper tube as well, she pounces, and attacks it, throws it and carries it around, all the while growling. She is a funny little girl, and as long as she's nice with the playing, she can growl as much as she wants. I can't wait to play tug-o-war with her. Cheers Quad:animal36 |

I have always played tug of war with all my babies....some growl, some dont...the growlers have never growled with any other activity....like aggression with food, or a toy they had and didnt want to give up, or even another pup, unless they were playing tug of war......I see nothing wrong with it, and it has never deteriorated into anything more than that..... |

That's good to know that it's ok. Like I said, I do let Mandie and Shelby play tug. They love it. I just supervise. I wonder why that vet told an earlier poster not to let them. I can't remember if anyone of authority said it when I read it almost a year ago, but it was said not to let them. Curious why some think/believe that it is not ok? |

Chachi growls when he plays tug of war and in the 8 yrs I have had him it has never evolved into agression. It is just how dogs play |

Sounds like a lot of the pups do:) I guess Joel is just a growler, he's NEVER done the aggressive growl. He uses it as a way to tell me something even to go potty. So it makes me feel better, I should get a video of him and Milo playing tug. He sounds like he's being strangled lol |
