Wonder why the breed has the problems it does! I can't believe I see with my own two eyes a classifed area saying 'Minature Yorkshire Terriers'. This statement IMHO is what misleads 'Joe Public' in thinking there are 2 versions of a Yorkie. Standard and Minature. I have people ask if I breed Minature Yorkies..Lord!! http://gotpetsonline.com/yorkshire-t...e-terrier.html On another page of the same site it has a different description for 'Yorkshire Terriers'!! http://gotpetsonline.com/yorkshire-t...rrier-dog.html I am just venting..not trying to offend anyone by saying 'Joe Public'. |
And people wonder where all of the new terminology comes from. My boss had a yorkie that passed away to old age last summer. When she found out I raise yorkies, she asked if they were the minature kind. I told her I have standard yorkies and that Gracie is 5 1/2 lbs. Her response, "Well, I had a minature one." I really didn't want to get into a long drawn out conversation with her on the standard and that there was no such thing as a minature yorkie so I just left it at that and walked away. |

I agree with you both, it is frustrating, with bringing Bailey to work with me,, I hear it often ( since he is 10+pounds) People say " Oh, I want one of the teacup ones" Or " Oh he's one of the Big kind" I have tried to EDUCATE some, and others I just say "Yep" My boss and I laugh often, cause I have tried to explain to people so many times, he cracks up now that I dont bother anymore. But like you said,, ads and things on tv, saying stuff like that.. IS WHY! :thumbdown |
TeaPOT Can we add a TeaPOT to that list? What about a BeerMUG?? I can't stand those "cutesy" terms which to me are only used for marketing purposes -- to basically raise the purchase price of the poor pup to an unreasonable amount. People always charge more for the so-called "teacups". It just makes me sick!  What's next in line to be bred down from the standard?? A teacup Mastiff? A teacup German Shepherd? A teacup Pit Bull? Gimme a break! |
I've had someone ask me if Brutus was a miniature yorkie! I told them a yorkie is a yorkie and they're not like poodles! |
I get that all the time too... "do you have any miniature yorkies?" or... "do you have any tiny teacup yorkies?" I just tell them that I have yorkshire terriers , I do not try to get into a debate with them because it would just end up with them pegging ME as a bad person when all I was trying to do is educate them, so I just leave it be now days and just say, "no, I only have yorkshire terriers" |
Geez! Those breeders need to educate themselves and realize that there is only one kind of yorkie, not teacup, miniature, standard...They mislead "Joe Public" into thinking that there are several kinds, and that's why we have so many people out there talking about wanting to buy teacups. I don't understand...Do you think these breeders do not educate themselves or do you think maybe they just ignore the knowledge they have so that they can make more money by classifying yorkies into these cutesy categories. |

People always ask me if Tucker is "miniature" or "teacup". They seem disappointed when I say - he's just a regular Yorkie! I always feel so uncomfortable, because I don't want to make some poor stranger feel dumb by saying there is no such thing, but at the same time if I don't tell them who will?? |
Silkies I think some people confuse them with being Yorkies and then they see actual Yorkies who look small in comparison! |
Peoples are always asking me if Jade and Mitsou are teacup Yorkies and I always answer " From which end do you want to drink your tea ? I don't know why but they turn back . |
Irene, I definitely see what you're saying...If I were a breeder such as yourself, I wouldn't be able to advertise on a site like that either. They make it seem like there are a variety of yorkies when in reality there aren't. |
My sister boyght me Dog World magazine the other day because it had a Yorkie on the cover. I looked at the classifieds in the back and was surprised to see several breeders stating teacup, mini's etc! |
It is frustrating! People ask me all the time, "Is Bouncer a teacup/miniature?" I just flat out tell them he is a Yorkie, he weighs 4 point something pounds, and there is no such thing as teacups or miniatures, some people just try to breed them down to be smaller than the standard which isn't really healthy for them. Mostpeople just go, "oh....i had no idea!" and leave it at that. lol |
