I am hysterical, praying for my puppy I am a wreck, I have cried nonstop for almost 2 hours. Martinis dad took her to the vet today to get her rabies, she got her 2nd 9 way this past Thursday. We noticed a knot at the injection site and the vet said it was more then likely from the vaccine and should be ok and he will look at it Tuesday.(today). My fiancé just called me and told me they are keeping martini overnight and she has to be a minor surgery this afternoon to remove an abscess that's an allergic reaction from the vaccination. I am so upset,my baby is only 4 months old:( she has also lost almost another half a pound since last week but the 2 vets don't seem to be concerned with that, they took her temperature and drew some blood but they said she is in no way looks malnourished , too thin or unhealthy in any way. They don't think it's her liver because she has no symptoms of anything other then that abscess. She literally just pooped before her appointment and hadn't eaten since and they think that is part of the reason and her not feeling 100% because of the reaction. Even though you would ever Beale to tell she doesn't feel 100%. They also said their puppy scale only goes in .25 incriments so ifshesbetween a half pound and 1.25 it can draw the reading to the lower end even if she weighs 1.49oz. Please pray for my baby I am so scared and I feel like my heart could break. |
Praying for your puppy, Martini. Will there be someone in the office all night monitoring her? If not, I would transfer her to a 24 hour hospital after the procedure. Also, I would wait on the rabies vaccine until she is 6 months old. |
I'm so sorry your going through this! prayers to you and Martini! Maximo gave you good advice. Do what she says if you can. ((hugs)) |
There is a tech there, and I am waiting for rabies. They said they want to give her another 5 way next week to get her fully vaccinated since she can't take the 9way. |
I am so sorry! I am sure it is just the abcess but it would not hurt to have her BATs checked just to make sure the liver is ok. I hear there are not always signs. I mean, if they are checking and doing all this other stuff, can't hurt to run that bloodwork for BATs, ya know. Hugs!! Hang in there!! You are getting Martini taken care of and you are great parents. It's so hard when our littles are under the weather; I totally understand the agony you are in. We are here for your support, ok! Please keep us posted. |
Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry you and your baby are going through this. Prayers coming your way. |
praying that everything goes well for your baby |
I am so sorry, I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers ! |
I would wait 4 weeks between any vaccines... just safer that way, especially for smaller, younger dogs/pups. See Dr Dodds' protocol in the YT library. What's the rush anyway? |
Sending prayers for your puppy. I am so sorry that you are going through this. This is a sad awful situation. I am praying for a miracle for your baby... Please God bless this little puppy and perform a miracle...In Jesus name....Amen! |

Lots of prayers and hugs for you and Martini!! |
OM Gosh, you have to so scared! :( Martini is in my prayers and thoughts. I hope it is just a reaction from the shot and not something worse. These little ones can't take the shots like bigger ones. Do not get the rabies until she is 6 months and wait at least 2-4 weeks between other shots! What is a 9 way shot? We don't get those here in Iowa. Even the Lepto gets left out of the shot until they are 1 year. I hope her weight picks up and she comes back, eating like a little piggy! :) Hugs for you and Martini! |
So sorry to hear this. Like everyone says "hang in" and stick with your vet if you have confidence in the - if not get another opinion I have a 4 year old that is considered very small. She gets only one shot a month apart, ONLY. Do read Dr Dodds article. Frankly, starting this year I only titer and am working on a vet waiver for rabies. I'm sure others here on YT can give you there experience and thoughts. You have come to a group with a wealth of experience and willingness to share :D Will be thinking about you and Martini with prayers! |
I'd like to echo what others are saying because I left that out of my original reply and didn't mean to. Don't get any more vaccinations right now until this issue is well resolved. And don't do combined/multi vaccines at one time ok? space them out a couple of weeks..these little breeds just can't handle all the vaccines like bigger dogs (and even some of those have reactions, too). |
Oh no I am so sorry to read about Martini and the problems she is having. Sending out prayers that she will be OK. |
Sending up prayers for your baby... |
The more I read the more I want to wait for the rabies and this additional 5 way. What kills me is that was her last vaccine ( other the the rabies) she did fine with the first 9 way 3 weeks ago other then a little soreness and has been perfect which is why it was such a shock that this would happen. All previous shots have been 2/3 weeks apart. Has anyone heard of this happening? The vet seemed 100% confident she would be fine . I just can't see how it's ok for a tiny thing to be under sedation |
Maybe there wasn't enough time between the two shots - I don't know what a 9 way is either but my vets spaces my pups vaccines out because they are tiny - more so when they were under 1 year old. Like the others have said, wait on the rabies vaccine. I am hoping your little Martini will be okay and will pray for a speedy and complete recovery. |
You know, I have read where some pups even do fine on vaccines for a year or two and then suddenly have reactions. So, being fine the last time and then a reaction this time isn't uncommon. Go with your gut, wait til Martini is all good and strong again and go from there. That is what I'd do, too. |

Wow what does 9 way contain...that seems like a lot of vaccines in 1 shot. So sorry Martini is going through this, hope & pray that she'll make a full recovery very soon! |

I'm sorry your going through this and I'm so sorry Martini is ill, please keep us posted, prayer being said. |
THANK YOU everyone for your prayers and kind words. The Vet and my fiancé just called me (he's with her I'm at work and a nanny and can't leave right now) The vet got her in and done sooner then she originally had thought and she is OUT and doing GREAT!!!! I can't explain the relief in my heart. She said there wasn't any kind if bacterial infection that it was like an incapsulated pocket that her body for,Ed because it recognized a foreign object and did not want to let it in. She does have afew stitches though and abut of an open sore:( ALSO GOOD NEWS she weight almost 2lbs !!! The vet said she weighed her in the surgical center (we go to a animal hospital) on that more efficient scale because she kept picking her up and saying even though she's tiny there's no way she was weighing1.25lbs and she was right(theyre also no longer using that other puppy scale now that they see it messed up) AND because she was able to get her done early and they are there until 8pm we can pick her up TONIGHT between 6-8pm. She will be on a antibiotic liquid to be safe. Thank you god, and thank you everyone!!! |
Dr. Ron Schultz, Vaccination Titter Testing I know this is a trying time for you and hope the best for your puppy. Vaccinations for all animals are serious but for the animals under 10 pounds it is extremely serious. Yorkies and other breeds are having abscesses, anxiety, seizures, digestion problems and a host of issues interfering with the health and happiness of the dog. Before vaccinating any animal I would suggest reading Dr. Ron Schultz's article and titter testing your pets first. What Everyone Needs to Know About Canine Vaccines by Ronald D. Schultz, PhD http://truth4pets.org/2012/06/what-everyone-needs-to-know/ Also, Titter Testing our pets before administering the vaccination is always a good idea. It is worth the expense and time. This information may be helpful. REASONS FOR VACCINE TITER TESTING *I hope this information helps with future vaccinations and wish I would have read it before my precious Yorkie had her rabies vaccination. All the best to you. |
Woohoo!! Happy to read this update!! Yayness for Martini!! :) ETA: Posted before reading the posted info above and wanted to thank you for that info for all of us! |

Sorry I didn't catch this thread until now.....but now I can say congrats! Sounds like the worst is over & I hope she makes a speedy recovery! Take care. |
Thank you guys:) I can't wait to get my hands on that little nugget! Unlimited carrots and treats tonight!( jk..a little lol ) |
I am just now seeing this. WOW! I am so sorry that this happened and so thrilled that your baby is ok. You might want to keep the food to chic n rice until tomarrow. So the sedation will have a chance to get completely out of her system. Hope you all have a good, peaceful and uneventful night. |
