Vaccinations Miley is going to get her 16 week shots on Thursday. I wanted to know what vaccines are COMPLETELY necessary for her to have and which ones are NOT. I know vets push all kinds of vaccines down your throat and I just want to get what she NEEDS not what they THINK she needs. |

At 16 weeks, we did rabies. I think we finished puppy shots around the same time. We do rabies, and DHPP (no lepto). The shots can be separated but honestly dogs are more likely to react to the BOOSTER shot not puppy shots. I would definitely hang out at the vet for a good half hour after the DHPP shot to make sure the pup doesn't react. Rabies, I just leave because it's pretty infrequent that dogs react to rabies. As for lepto, I would definitely stay at the office for this one as well if you do it. I would not do lepto at the same time as DHPP. These are my personal views, and you should discuss your concerns w/ your veterinarian who should be more than delighted to explain things to you. |
I asked my vet about that too. He said with these babies he didn't give the lepto vaccine. We spaced Sphie's shots out as much as possible and she didn't get the rabies shot till she was 6 mo. |

If you choose to do lepto, it is given as a combo shot as DHLPP. Then you have to do a lepto booster, I believe every year and there are some vets who say for it to be really effective you have to do every 6 months. |

Sorry, the puppy shots are listed differently. DH2P is distemper CPV is parvo The booster is DH2PP Maybe Ellie May can be more specific than I can about this. |

I don't like to do shots -- no one does -- but at this age, they are important for Miley. Good luck! |

Cinders acts like it's nothing to get a shot. She gives the vet techs kisses as their giving the shot! I remember doing the rabies shot separate from all other shots. I took the day off incase she had a reaction, and she was the 1st appointment at the vets that day. I am beyond grateful that I found this vet! They understand yorkie needs. I really don't know how I got so lucky. They know what I need to do for Cinders before I ask. :) Out of the 4 vets near me, they are in the smallest building, and it's an old house that's been remodeled into the vet practice. I never thought such an awesome staff was inside when I first went there. |
Each dog responds differently to the shots. My Bella didn't make a peep, but when she got home, she was drowsy and out of it for a few hours, but perked up later. Bella had her rabies vaccination along with her puppy shots, but that was before I read on Yorkietalk that it was best to space them out. She did fine, but Bella is a TANK. I recommend that you definitely get the DHPP vaccination, and that you separately vaccinate for rabies at least 3 weeks later. Let us know what your vet recommends. |
this is another one of those really controvercial topics. I agree with the rabies not being given until at least 6 months. These little guys won't be left to run wild in the forest, so the chances of getting rabies is rare.... it is the law here so I have to have it, otherwise, I wouldn't. I do not get shots for anything unless my dogs are likely to be in direct contact with the virus... but that is just me .... vets will vaccinate for everything all the time... it is a huge moneymaker, and for us dog owners a huge puzzle... what is best for the dog??? a lot of controversy for sure. |

Many vets do over vaccinate. I prefer Dr. Dodd's vaccination schedule: Dr. Jean Dodds' Pet Health Resource Blog | Dr. Dodds' 2012 Canine Vaccination Protocol Put off the rabies shot as long as you can and never let the vet give the rabies shot at the same time as the core vaccines. |
