Okay! I'd rather be safe than sorry so if my vet decides its something she needs ill separate them

My dog almost died after getting the lepto vaccine at 12 weeks. Well, I thought he was going to. It was very scary. Lost control of his back legs, puked, his head couldn't hold up for a minute, we rushed back to the vet. Won't ever do it again and I find it completely unnecessary. Lots of small dogs have reactions from it.

I follow Dr. Dodd's protocol as best as I can.

So after the booster at one year old of DHPP and then rabies on a different day, I won't get any more vaccines for the rest of his life except rabies every 3 years as per the law.

He's gotten bordatella 3x in his life for different reasons and I won't ever again. Every time he's gotten some sort of cold, or something from it. And he's gotten kennel cough while supposedly 'protected' from the vaccine.

I never give the lepto shot either. It is to hard on the liver. Do you know if titer tests are acceptable for the rabies shot? You might want to check that out for your area and do the titer test.

I have heard that the kennel cough vaccine is only good for 6 months.

KathyKelben 06-24-2013 07:16 AM

titres are a great idea if your vet will do them and then give a cert. saying your dog is protected.

Every thing I have read said titers are not 100% and really are not any good but for puppies and trying to figure out the best time to give them there shots so I doubt they will say your dogs protected and not make you get the shot.

chachi 06-24-2013 10:50 AM

Puppies need ajj their shots you can titer afteer the one yr annual shots. I get the lepto and my dogs have never had a reaction to it

So I just called the vet on my way home from work to schedule Mileys appointment for Thursday. Of course they tried to give the rabies shot and they seemed kind of like "wow" when I said no I will be postponing that. I asked what shots she will be getting and she said "distemper" but isn't she supposed to be getting DHPP?

cindersellie 06-24-2013 02:11 PM

At 16 weeks, Cinders got DHPP, then at 17 weeks she got her rabies shot since everything was ok with the DHPP.

Lovetodream88 06-24-2013 02:40 PM

People probably think I over vaccinate Callie but in my opinion I don't I am trying to protect her from everything I can. Some will say that the vaccines only protect against some strands well that still is better then none. I get Lepto because I know it is around here because we had a goat die of it. I get Lyme because she was getting bit by a lot of ticks and most of them where tiny plus Lyme hurts and I would like to spare her that pain. I get Bordatella because I like to take her lot of places other dogs go and Kennel cough can last a month and lead to worse infections. I get DAP every three years too. In my opinion its much better to be protected then not and your dog get sick. Two of the dogs I grew up with that we had sense puppies only got there puppy shots and that's it they where never treated for fleas and ticks nothing and both got cancer and one has died the other is probably close. It all depends on the kind of risks you want to take. Callie has never had a bad reaction just gets kinda sore and sleepy/grumpy afterwards. My vet feels Callie is big enough to get a few show at a time but because Callie is so sensitive we space them out. I talked to vet at length about Lepto.

chestermama 06-24-2013 04:12 PM

rabies and routine shots separate, they are too small for both at once, dhpp is the one you want

Britster 06-24-2013 04:24 PM

Over-vaccination is not just some internet mumbo jumbo talk. Some of the worlds leading researchers of vaccines have provided us with information that should definitely be thoroughly discussed as a pet owner.

Quote:

The present study examines the DOI for core viral vaccines in dogs that had not been revaccinated for as long as 9 years. These animals had serum antibody to canine distemper virus (CDV), canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2) and canine adenovirus type-1 (CAV-1) at levels considered protective and when challenged with these viruses, the dogs resisted infection and/or disease. Thus, even a single dose of modified live virus (MLV) canine core vaccines (against CDV, cav-2 and cpv-2) or MLV feline core vaccines (against feline parvovirus [FPV], feline calicivirus [FCV] and feline herpesvirus [FHV]), when administered at 16 weeks or older, could provide long-term immunity in a very high percentage of animals, while also increasing herd immunity.
Age and long-term protective immunity in dogs ... [J Comp Pathol. 2010] - PubMed - NCBI

Even more exciting is the task force has acknowledged that in the case of the non-rabies core vaccines, immunity lasts at least 5 years for distemper and parvo, and at least 7 years for adenovirus.

But your dog is not ANY more protected getting vaccines every year than if they got them every 3 years for example. Because it's the SAME exact vaccine. There is no difference between "1 year" or "3 year" or whatever like a lot of vets try to say. So getting your dogs vaccinated every year is not protecting them in any way and all you are doing is adding unnecessary chemicals into their body year after year.

The thing is, a lot of vets don't want to give up that money they get from yearly vaccines. Let's face it - most dog owners wouldn't want to fork up the dough to get titers and a majority of people ONLY take their dogs to the vet when they need vaccines (so it IS a way to get pets into the vet, which is a good thing). It's a HUGE money maker for them. Of course a lot are going to continue recommending yearly. Now, an owner like me, I'll be at the vet at least once a year anyways for annual check-ups, bloodwork, etc so they'll still get their money from me. But an average owner... does not do this.

Quote:

Consider this… One dose of rabies vaccine costs the vet about 61 cents. The client is typically charged between $15 and $38, plus a $35 office visit. The markup on the vaccine alone is 2,400 percent to 6,200 percent—a markup equivalent to charging $217 for a loaf of bread. According to one estimate, removing the one-year rabies vaccination and consequential office visit for dogs alone would decrease the average small vet’s income from $87,000 to $25,000—and this doesn’t include cats or other vaccinations.

According to James Schwartz, author of Trust Me, I’m Not a Veterinarian, 63 percent of canine and 70 percent of feline vet office visits are for vaccinations. Clearly, radically changing the vaccine schedule for dogs and cats would result in a huge economic loss for any veterinary practice that is built around shots. And chances are the vaccines you are paying so much for are creating even more income for vets, because the adverse reactions and other medical issues caused by the vaccines keep Fluffy coming back often!

Veterinary vaccine sales amounted to more than $3.2 million in 2004 and have risen 7 percent per year since 2000. This figure is projected to exceed $4 billion in 2009. Six companies account for more than 70percent of world veterinary vaccine sales. The market leader is Intervet, with sales of almost $600 million in 2004. That’s a whole lot of 61-cent vaccines. The United States has by far the largest share of the national market with revenues of $935 million, and Japan comes in second with $236 million.
Pet vaccination warning. Severe adverse reaction to immunization

As far as the non-core vaccines that have to be given yearly in order to be "effective",
Lyme disease in the dog is an infection for which over 90% of infected dogs will never get sick and the 5% to 10% that do get sick can be easily treated with a safe inexpensive course of antibiotics. This situation would seem to indicate that vaccination is simply not worth the expense.

There is also talk that kidney disease can occur in some individuals with long-term antigen exposure, in which case vaccination might be just as hazardous as actual infection.

Oh FWIW, Jackson is very active, always outside, in the woods, in the farmfields, playing with other dogs, at dog parks, in pet stores, at the beach, etc, etc, and I still will not be vaccinating every year and am not worried one bit.

CouversMom 06-24-2013 05:03 PM

I have never given Lepto, and after reading this thread... I will no longer be giving bordatella. I think it is important to research vaccinations and know what you are putting into your pets.

Giorgismom 06-29-2013 06:16 AM

It's funny this comes up because Giorgio has a slight case of kennel cough and he was vaccinated. The place where I board him had dogs that were not vaccinated. The owners were addressed because this is against the policy for boarding a pet there. I am going to take the advice I got from the vet from the vet school I take Giorgio to and get the nasal bordatella before I board little man again.

His vet said even though he got the shot, he may get a slight strain which is what's happened. He won't be as sick as a dog who didn't get it. Giorgio gets Benadryl whenever he gets vaccinated even though Porker Butt weighs 9 pounds I take no chances. I was offered the Lepto shot. I opted not to. My area isn't wooded so he doesn't need it.

I seen vaccinations not work on kids as well. I remember about 6 years ago, my boys were vaccinated against chicken pox, it was required and sure enough, they still got it, nowhere near as bad as it would have been if they had-not gotten vaccinated.

Ellie May 06-29-2013 06:50 AM

Rabies is necessary sometime between 4 and 6 months depending on state law, then one year later, then every 1 to 3 years.

DHO is necessary with one round being given at or after 16 weeks. The number of rounds depends on the starting date. Then a booster is needed one year later. Then the schedule is highly variable, but it should not be given yearly.

All other vaccines are non-core, need to be given every 6 to 12 months, are not always protective, and should only be used if the risk of disease and secondary infections clearly outweighs the risk of the vaccine itself.

My dogs do ok respiratory-wise. They do not need to be vaccinated for bordatella. I woud rather my dogs gets kennel cough than vaccinating every year. Same goes for myself and the flu shot.

Lyme is very treatable. As ling as an owner is paying attention to symptoms treatment should take care of it. I don't like what I have read so far about the vaccine.

Lepto is way overused, imo. Yes, one of my dogs gets it, but we are an extremely high risk state and he is a naughty boy sniffing everything out. And my jury is still out on whether or not he should have it.

You get the bad with the good. As good is vaccines are and as good as they look, they are negative consequences to getting them. Each case needs to be very carefully considered.

xoCourtney 06-29-2013 09:01 AM

Okay so how many times do they get puppy shots? Miley is 16 weeks and got those shots and they said come back in 3 weeks for her last round. I thought 16 weeks was the last round?
