Spaying to tomorrow
 

I drop Ellie off in the morning for her spaying and I'm so nervous!! How will she be when she gets home, will she be able to walk and pee?? Is there anything special I should do? She usually sleeps in her xpen at night should I not leave her alone? Sorry for all the questions but I'm a wreck :(

Hi and I know how nervous we all get with spaying and neutering. I will keep Ellie in my prayers all goes well tomorrow. I hope others will come online and will answer your questions. I do believe she will be able to walk around and go to the bathroom after she has rested for a while. Please let us know how she is doing or if you have any other questions we are all here for you.

Hi. Lucy was spayed several months ago. It doesn't take very long to do. She hated being at the vets all day though. When I picked her up, she lept into my arms and started climbing up my neck. I held her close for a long time until she calmed down.

Vet provided some doggie tramadol (pain med) which I gave everyday and also an antibiotic for infection. The scar looked big but you can't see a think now. I don't remember when the stitches came out, maybe a week or so later.

When we returned home after the surgery, she didn't want to eat but drank a whole lot (no fluids from the evening before.) She was tired. She didn't need a cone and didn't pick at her stitches.

She also let me take her out to pee. I carried her out and put her down where she normally goes and then I carried her back inside.

In a couple of days she was running/behaving about normal but I watched her very closely and would carry her as much as possible.

It all looks terrible when it's first done, but trust me everything goes back to normal very quickly. Dogs recover much faster than humans, I think.

Will be praying for that little one. Just expect a sleepy girl who whines a bit and needs her pain Rx. as directed and no licking, scratching her incision and no jumping. Move the doggie steps/ramp and lift her if she wants up on furniture or anything but I just put Tibbe in his crate when I brought him home. He seemed comfy there and I moved it beside the couch where I could look down into it while he was sleeping.

Just watch for anything irregular and call the vet if any problems. I checked the gums, pulse and respiration ever so often that first night because I'm a nut about it post-op and you can syringe a little water every so often into the side of the mouth pocket if she won't drink. Also, I even put a little pasty food in that same mouth pocket when mine wouldn't eat and wanted to give a little nutrition. By the next day, they are usually eating and drinking a bit and some are seemingly back to normal - others still a little off-kilter for another half day or so. Main thing is keeping them from overdoing the jumping and activities until the vet clears her. Dogs are stoic animals, programmed genetically to hide pain and routinely do not show it so just because she may be acting like a regular dog doesn't mean she's not still fresh from surgery and could be in pain so be aware of that. Usually a dog will only show acute pain or unexpected, sudden pain but once they are beyond that, they do their best to hide it and behave normally.

Thank you, hearing other people's experiences helps. I'm such a worry wart and will be a wreck while she's there, I'll just be glad when its over! Keep her in your thoughts and prayers please. :)

I just got Miley yesterday so I'm not helpful with answering questions but I wanted to say I will keep you and Ellie in my prayers. She's such a little doll and i'm sure everything will be fine :)

If you get the blood work before the spay there really is not much of a reason to worry (I know we all still do). Callie was very very tired and did not want to do anything but sleep the night after her spay then the next coupe of days she was low key. They can walk and pee still. We had one dog growing up that the night after her spay she was so well ummm "high" that if her cone touched anything even just barely she would stop moving and just stand there until someone moved her. You should keep her from licking her stitches though and from jumping or anything that could rip her stitches.

Someone posted that they used onesies after the spay- are those good as they are? or did they cut the bottom off and just have those on the girls like a tee shirt? I'd like to not use a cone if possible.

Sending prayers for Ellie, I remember how nervous I was when Pixie was spayed. It will be over bf you know it and she will be back in your arms soon.

We a member here who sells the soft cone I got one for Callie when she was having LP surgery and have it on hand encase she ever has an emergency or needs it. Callie normally stops licking when I tell her to and has never been interested in her surgical sights like her spay or her knee. When you are with them and can watch them unless they are licking no matter what they don't have to have a onsie or a cone on. Here is Mom to Hot Rod's site for her cones kissecollar.com.

Thanks everyone I really appreciate the support. Ellie didn't have blood work the vet never asked for it??? I'm so nervous I know they told me no food after 10:00 pm but she can drink water right?

Praying for Ellie for a safe surgery and speedy recovery.

I always hold water after midnight. When you drop her off, I would ask if they could do the pre-op blood tests right away. They should be able to.

I would ask them about blood work when you go to drop her off tomorrow. If they wont do the blood work reschedule the spay. I would never ever suggest any surgery with out the blood work being done. My Uncles dog went to be spayed and had they not done the blood work they never would have known she had liver issues and it could have killed her to go under at that time. She had to go on liver medicine and have a special doctor spay her and flush her liver after. Blood work is very very important.

They should be able to do in-house blood work. From what I read, you can put a onesie on backwards. Ellie's tail can go through where the snaps are. That should make it so much more comfortable for her. I hope it goes as painlessly as possible. I know how difficult this is for you, but your baby will feel so much better in just a few days after this procedure. I'll be thinking of both of you tomorrow. Please let us know how she does.

I know it's late but NO WATER, NOTHING. If your puppy did have water, make sure you report it to the Vet when you take her in!!! The Vet will determine whether the procedure can go forward.

Your pup can't have anything in her stomache that could aspirate while she's under anesthesia.

Just picked her up and she's doing great :). She's a little glassy eyed and tired but she's being such a trooper. So glad it's over for her and thank you all for the prayers :)

I'm just now seeing your post and am so happy that your pup came through the surgery well. If you are using a onesie, your baby shouldn't be interested in licking the stitches, I wouldn't think. We used one on our dog that passed away last December, after her surgery, and it worked wonderfully for her until she passed away.

My Princess Sophie goes in tomorrow morning and like you I am a nervous wreck. I'm hoping for success.

Thank you and my thoughts and prayers with be with your little one also :). I don't have a onesie, wish I did. She's doing ok now just wants to be close to us and we stop her from licking. She hasn't peed yet so that concerns me some...I want my little whipper snapper back :(

Well, Ellie is eating good and moving around ok but her incision looks a little puffy and red I think she after it last night so she definitely needs a cone (which I'm sure she'll love!) BUT she has not peed since she got home yesterday! Calling the vet this morning....very worried
