Picking up Brighton!!!!!!!
 
We are picking up Brighton tomorrow at 4:00. We have a two hour drive home that in rush hour could turn into three. If we have to make a potty stop along the way do we need to put down a piddle pad? We are not planning on pad training but we will use a pad if it will protect her!

That is so exciting. I would take a pad so you don't have to put him on the ground. Can't wait to see pictures.

I brought a potty pad and put it on the floor of the car for him to use. I would not put any pup outside until 2 weeks after his/ her shots

Smart idea...I too was worried about this for picking up Miley. I love when other threads help me too ;)

I agree with Teri. You don't want your pup anywhere other dogs are till he's had all his shots. Too risky! I also had a pad on the floor but never used it and we had a couple hour drive. I would, just as a reminder, suggest you take the Nutrical. Bringing home baby can be very stressful for them. Trust me on this, I know from experience. Good luck and be sure to take lots of picts!!!!! So excited for you!!

Thank you....yes I have nutrical in the bag and the breeder is going to give her a couple drops of nutri-drops before we leave. She went for shots today...her first time in the car and she got sick twice :( we bought a snoozer car seat so we are hoping this will help with the car sickness.

Can I ask where you bought the carseat? I can only ever seem to find it online. I'm hoping there's a local store here that I can purchase it from.

I have to admit...As an educator part of my make up is to educate myself on everything...PARVO is freaking me out a little bit. I know about the dangers and the precautions that one has to take, but is it really this serious, or is it like any pandemic that occurs, people just seriously overreact? Please dont get me wrong, I am not trying to downplay the seriousness, and I know there are people on this forum that have lost babies to this horrible virus, but like I was telling my wife this morning, I feel like I want to put Brighton in a bubble for the next 6 weeks!!! I am more nervous than when my daughter was born. :confused:

Parvo really is serious, because it's common, and many dogs showing no symptoms are carriers. I think it has about a 90% survival rate with intensive intervention, but who wants to subject their puppies to that, and also risk their death? I took my Bella outside for a few minutes each day as a puppy, but only in my driveway and front yard, where I know no other dogs had been. I also wheeled her around the neighborhood in a covered dog stroller, and when people walking dogs asked if they could get close, I said no, she hasn't had all of her shots yet. Brighton doesn't have to live in a bubble, but please take parvo seriously! Carrying puppy pads in the car with you when you pick her up is an excellent idea! If you are traveling on an interstate, whatever you do, DO NOT stop at a rest area and take Brighton to the area designated for pets to potty--that's asking for parvo. If Brighton really needs to go, she'll go on the pad on the floor of your vehicle. Good luck, and keep us posted on Brighton's journey home!

Thank you! I appreciate your advice. We do have a stroller for her and plan on taking her around like you have mentioned. I am just lost at what to do if she has to potty? Is it safe to find an area off the beaten path and put down a pad for her to potty on? Or is going potty outside just totally out of the question right now?

Yes definitely some piddle pads. Not only for potty but also is very handy if your baby gets car sick. Mine did no the ride home. Water and also clean up items like paper towels and scent free baby wipes.

Enjoy your new baby. Can't wait to see pictures of Brighton.

Oh how exciting!!! :pi remember picking up Jasper back in March. We also drove 2 hours to pick him up. I didn't think we would ever get there. Lol He did great and then got a little car sick literally around the corner from home. Thankfully I had taken a towel. Now my boy is growing like a weed. Ahhh back in the day. :p Good luck and safe travel. Pictures!!! Lol

Exactly!! It is very serious. My son learnt this the hard way. I learned from it as well. You have been given good advice in this post so I won't repeat.

I potty Bella before taking her on excursions--she can hold it for at least an hour--but you can take along potty pads with you if you will be out longer. The better carriers usually have a shelf or compartment on the bottom for carrying items like that. Parvo is picked up when your dog comes into contact with other animals' feces and urine, so if you pick a pristine area, put down a pad, and have Brighton go on that, you should be safe. Also, if your yard or driveway is animal-free, it might be safe to potty train her there, with or without pads. Otherwise, you can train her to go on a pad or artificial grass patch on the lanai (at least it's outdoors) and move to grassier areas after she's had her final puppy shots.

PetSmart has them, but I found Mindy's at Ross and it was a lot cheaper.

Just home with her...traffic was bad, weather was awful! She did great no car sickness! Will post pictures tomorrow! Thank you for all the well wishes!

Brighton is doing awesome....she slept all night in her kennel on my night stand...I woke her up to take her out to potty at 2:30, she went pee pee and then right back into her kennel to sleep until 6:00. She is amazing! I hardly slept cause I just laid there and watched her all night! I promise to post pictures soon...she is resting now and I am going to take a little nap :)
