squeamish guests... The end cupboard in my kitchen, which is right above ZoE's glass canisters of kibble & treats, is where her bowls & dishes are. I have a set of 6 ceramic bowls and 6 correll sidekicks. These are specifically ZoE's. But, on occasion, if we're eating something I'd share with her, I'll grab whatevers handy & put food in it for her...meaning the same dishes we eat off. I've never thought it was a big deal. They get washed after she's done, just like all the dishes do. I don't run a separate load for her dishes in the dishwasher, I just wash everything together (after it's been rinsed, of course). I never thought how guests would view it. But I had a friend over the other evening who was amazed that I loaded ZoE's dishes right in the dishwasher with my own. My friend then asked in horror if ZoE eats of the dinnerware we'd just eaten off (we'd picked up a mostaccioli dinner from a local restaurant to split). I said that no she's never eaten off a dinner plate, cos it would be too be for her anyway, but that yes, she's probably eaten off the small bread plates we used. <--- that is the look I got!!! Am I the only one that does this? Is it really that  worthy? Does anyone else let their dog(s) eat off dinnerware on occasion? What about loading the dishwasher...all together or separate runs? Come on...confess :D |
Max & Teddy have their own set of salad/bread plates because we bought a new set of dinnerware for the humans, so we probably have not eaten off the same ones. However, they do go in the dishwasher together. I don't have a problem with it, but I understand that non-crazy dog people would. |
Cali does have a set of little bowls however she has been known to eat off the bone china if we are sharing with her:D It all goes into the dishwasher together! Of course, folks who come to my house know it is Cali's house, too, so they never give it a thought :) |
I met some people like that. I thought 'Why even have a dog if you're that afraid of germs!' They lived on a farm though and worried about micro organisms in the stream water... plus that was years ago. I hope dishwashers do a better job nowadays. Truthfully, I'd be more worried about catching something from other humans, lol. I wash everyones dishes together... |
We have 2 other dogs besides Jasper and they have eaten out of cereal bowls or eaten off of bread and dinner plates on occassion. While we hand wash them first, they are then put in the disheasher with our other dishes. There certainly isn't a problem in this household. We are all family. :D |
Yeah our dogs have eaten off our plates. I've never really thought about it being gross, but I could see how others could..I guess haha :p |
Yes! lol I don't care what they eat off of as long as it goes through the dishwasher, and besides Joel doesn't have germs! DUH!! |
Haha, your friend sounds like my parents :D I personally don't have a problem with it and wash the doggy bowls when washing the dishes |

And my dad goes even more   if I'm over at theirs, and cut Harry's lunch up on their bone china....!!! :D Sally + Harry x |
yes, my dogs have eaten out of our dishes as well as their own.. doesn't bother me at all, they are washed in soap and hot water after all :) |
I wouldn't have any problem with it. When I was a toddler, my parents used to pour left-over coffee with milk into our cocker spaniel's water bowl (yes, I know it's bad, but Inky lived to a ripe old age), and I used to get on my hands and knees and drink the coffee right out of the dog's bowl. After they caught me doing this a couple of times, they started giving me my own small cup of coffee with milk and sugar just to keep me from drinking out of the dog's bowl. I actually remember doing it, LOL! |
LOL this is why I don't have any non dog loving friends. But seriously no one has ever asked me and I would not hesitate to let Lola eat or drink off one of my plates and then put it in the dishwasher with everything else. One of my friends said her mother would be horrified if she knew that she bathed her dog in the kitchen sink, I thought that was odd as well. |
Sometimes LOL:) |
My mother in law probably would have gone to pieces over something like that. I don't even think about it! Soap, hot water, and a steam sanitizer on the dishwasher make it a non-issue for me. If a guest is worried that my dishes aren't clean enough for them, they are welcome to bring their own - and take them home to wash themselves! |
Good grief, tell you friend that your dog does not have cooties. We eat off of Corelle dishes and sometimes I feed the puppies on a Corelle bread plate. I wash them all the same and put them in the cabinet. |
Ziva, Abby and the big dog have their own dishes- but I see my DH and DS let them lick the milk out of their cereal bowl:rolleyes:. They do all go into the dishwasher together- between the detergent and hot water I'm not to concerned about either one of us passing germs around. I do let Ziva lick off my yogurt spoon without a second thought... |
I gueses the squeamish wouldn't want to go to a drive-through ice cream place with Lollie and me. I usually get a vanilla/chocolate twist. Lollie gets the vanilla and I get the chocolate. :D |
People are weird. lol. Did you tell her that other people, strangers, that she doesn't even know, have come to your house and also eaten off your plates? lol. |
The Dish washer sanitizes stuff so I have no problem with it and I have OCD lol |
I let them eat off our plates all the time..of course they are rinsed and go into the dishwasher. I often bath Remy in the kitchen sink. I used to not because I worried about germs. I started thinking of how germing it was to rinse off a chicken etc.... I just clean up really well afterwards. |
I'd rather have my dogs tongues on my plates and silverware than most of my family..... |

My doggies' mouths are cleaner than most of my family members' mouths! :D Atleast I know where Nena and Rufus' tong have been... |
I serve my dogs their food in our bowls and saucers. I don't think it's that big of deal. They get washed and sanitized in the dishwasher. I do have some friends/acquaintances that would have issues with this, but I would rather eat after my dogs than those friends. |
My dogs have their own dishes, but I always wash them in my sink etc... Once when I was visiting my aunts I made the mistake of washing out their water bowl in her sink and she had a fit! Of course she didn't say anything to me, but complained to my mother. I don't understand it... that's what sinks/dishwashers are for to clean. |
When it was just Chibi he ate out of Asian rice bowls, they were pretty, I''d wash them with everything else. Now I have two dogs they upgraded to real dog bowls but still wash with everything else. Heck if I was out of bowls I'd probably let them eat off our dinner plates. I rather share germs with my dogs then some people I know! ;) |
I'm so glad that I'm not the only one :) |
I agree, people can be to freakin' weird and obsessed with hygiene. I think most of our dogs are cleaner than many people, and besides there isn't much they contribute to the germ pool that's gonna harm us anyway. Hey, I've gotten the occasional unwanted French kiss from dogs and am still here alive & kickin! :D |

Jess sometimes eats out of my crème brulee ramekins, they are the perfect size. Since I NEVER make crème brulee I figured oh well she might as well enjoy them...:) |
My relatives have real issues with me and my dogs....even if all dishes are washed in the dishwasher, on the "sterilize" setting, they are absolutely repulsed that I use the same saucers on occasion, to give mine little bites of some kind of treat...like a dollop of cottage cheese, etc. It makes them ill to think I wash dog bowls in with the dishes we eat off! And the other day, I happened to mention that my next washing machine was going to have to be the largest tub I could find, because I am tearing my washing machine up washing my washable pee pads in the washing machine....now, NOT with my familys clothes, towels, etc....separate wash, same machine was enough to absolutely gross my cousin completely out! I pre wash the pads in a wash tub of bleash water outside, wring the pads out bring them in and wash them in the washing machine! Wont even get into keeping my dogs containers of cottage cheese in our fridge! They dont eat out of the container....I scoop out the cottage cheese with a clean spoon, I do write DOGS on the container just to keep my son from eating all the cottage cheese! So, I understand right where you are coming from!!! |
