am i too protective? after reading and hearing about heartworms, fleas, ticks etc.. I am afraid to let Jasmin go play outside. She only goes outside for potty and nothing more. If we are outside, I hold her or else she stays on the deck. DH thinks I am too protective and not letting her be a dog. |
How old is she? I am very careful with having my girls out when mosquitos are out. If there are a lot of bugs out I bring them in. So if you are over protective good for you:) Yorkies are small and it doesn't take much to make them sick or harm them. I did not let Pixie outside until she was about a yr old. I NEVER let them outside without me and they are always on a leash. I guess I like being protective bc it means just that......I am protecting them:) |
The question is, does she think she's a dog? Mine doesn't. LOL! |
she thinks she is a human baby. hahaa. |

Mine don't either! Mini rarely goes out, she sits in the window but she has never been a big fan of the outside world...she's also allergic to everything in it...so it works....Mia could care less, they are my house dogs, they romp, play, they are so dang cute. So anyway, they don't go out often...not overprotective unless she's begging to go out??? |

Hehe, Maybe it's a girl thing:p Joel loves being a dog and getting dirty and being outside. He would not tolerate being in a bag or stroller and doesn't even like being carried, lol:D |

I don't let my boys in our yard because we have so many dangerous things (tons of toxic plants, a hawk living in our trees, and more), but we do go for walks every day. They love the outdoors! Don't let fleas, ticks, and HW be the reasons to keep Jasmin indoors. Those things can be prevented. |
I guess she does like to go outside. If we let her go outside, she will run around then she will run to the door because she is hot. She likes to go for car rides. |
Blazer would go crazy if he couldn't go outside! I'm SOOOO glad that the weather is nicer now- we've been outside almost non-stop lately. I'm all for letting kids be kids and dogs be dogs. |
If you are out there with her and you know the area is safe let her play. Heart worms can happen to dogs who are only inside dogs. |
I am also very over protective....I am cautious about the chemicals I use on /in my babies to prevent fleas, worms and heartworms. I use dzfferent things, individualized to each dog. The thing ALL my dogs get, is milk thistle....it helps the liver clear their system from toxins. I feel better giving it to them...and I have done so for years. These babies are exposed to sooo many toxins....some we deliberately give to them for preventatives, some they get into just walking around in public or the yard, things we do not know about. Rather safe than sorry.......... |
IMO yes. I am over protective in my own ways but he is VERY much a dog! I simply cannot imagine keeping him indoors except potty breaks. I think we'd both go absolutely insane. Nothing better than spending the day watching him play in the dog park (small dog side) or go for a long walk, or find new trails and hiking spots. I often will spend 2-3 hrs at our state park on a nice day, and do a 4 mile walk and visit the dog park. Carrying them all the time is doing them no favors. |

I think a dog should be a dog. For all the mentioned worries there are preventive treatments that work wonders, if you apply them regularly and properly. Odin has been out since he was 9weeks (kept him away from dog until 12 weeks and he has all shots) now he is 5 months and he goes on 1 h forest trails every day and once a week we go on a slow (very slow, he just kind of trots next to me) with the bike. Some people think i am crazy yet the vet was ok with it since he is hyperactive. They need to stretch their legs, and use all their muscles to be healthy and live long. I practice the same with all my dogs and all of them lived happy until they were at least 19 years old (even big dogs). I understand the need to protect cause i also have it, yet a dog is a dog even if he is 1kg or 110kg ( we had a romanian sheep dog that weighed that and he was a monster). I don;t say run with them but 45min stroll will do wonders.... |
