Exactly what is a cotton coat? There is some talk about yorkies having a "cotton coat"......exactly what is it? Is it wavy, course or soft? I always thought Max has a cotton coat because his is so wavy, but very soft. Tatiana has the strangest coat....It mattes, especially in the butt area, almost curly with a semi soft. What is really weird, is the hair on her back legs and behind are kind of fuzzy and almost twist together. She is 18 weeks and still should have her puppy coat. Could she have a cotton coat? If she does, should I try and keep her coat short? I really don't want it shaved short...... |
Cotton-wooly coat Cotton coat is not silk. It means when you touch it -warm, soft, fluffy. It has undercoat. When you brush it , you will see a lot of fur on the brush. It can be wavy, can be strait, can be black ( usually) can be blue.:aimeeyork |
1 Attachment(s) Here is a picture of Tatiana's hair.......again she is only 18 weeks. Really would love some opinions of whether she has a "cotton coat".... Thank you, in advance! :) |

I think it can be really hard to tell at that age. Teddy's coat changed so much all the way to age 2. One of the exhibitors described the difference between silk and cotton by comparing them to needlepoint thread. If you have ever handled the thread, you know the difference between the silks and the cotton. Cotton coats tend to mat more and grow faster. There are also "modified" coats that are somewhere in between. |

Awww...Tatiana is adorable!!! Her coat looks just like Jasper's except his hair is straight. I think he is cotton from all that ive read. I brush him twice a day and no matting so far. That may be because his hair is straight, I'm not sure. Oh and he is 15 weeks old. I hope his coat stays this way. We will see. Your baby is really adorable!!! :) |
Totaly agree with Maximo! It is hard to say without touching the coat. Tatiana is very cute. I believe that she will be silk, but wavy.:aimeeyork |

All I know is cotton hair tangles more than silky hair, Joey hardly ever tangles, and Ralphie has more of a mixed coat and tangles easily. |

Tatiana's hair is so full and puffy, grows very fast and is so hard to comb! I already gave her a trim and cut 1/2 in off the hair on her back, tummy and sides. It is unbelievable how much hair she has! I know her hair is not silky like Teeka's hair and it does feel like cotton, especially on her behind. From what everyone is saying and taking into account her age, I am thinking she is going to have a cotton coat. Is there a special conditioner or something to help control the mattes? I have some Pet Head leave in conditioner but it doesn't seem to help Tatiana's hair. It work wonderfully in Teeka's hair, but her hair is silky. |
4 Attachment(s) My female Khloe has a cotton coat. It is very soft, thick and tangles easily. She is more hair than dog! Here are some pictures: |
2 Attachment(s) Tatiana is such a cutie! She does look puffy lol Maybe she will be a cotton coat Here is some pics of joels cotton hair. The first pic is the longest it's ever gotten before I went crazy and cut it lol and the second one is his hair now, i'm attempting to grow it out again! |
I didn't know there were differences in types of coats, my Piyo is only 19 weeks old so I think it's still too soon to tell but he has the fluffy, puffy black coat. I assumed it was just a "puppy coat" and would straighten and silky itself out when he got older...good to know it might not, I would have been worried he was mixed and I had been fooled if I hadn't read this post. |
My Azrael who was 7 years in January has to be kept shaved down. Her coat is so extremely thick that if it grows out even one inch, she pants, scratches and even breaks out. It's just too thick against her skin. The baby, Jilli Ann is 1 year 9 months and has the same coat. I cut her down once and she looked really bad because it was when I was trying so hard to get weight on her poor little bony body, and with the short hair she looked really long and even emaciated. She still hasn't hit the four pound mark, but her coat is long and she isn't happy with the time I have to spend brushing and combing her so I may have to cut it off again. |

Quick question (Sorry to take over the tread :) ) Silk hair yorkies are hypoallergenic because they have hair instead of fur, but does the same count for cotton hair yorkies? |
I think Cooper may have a combination coat. His head is really silky, but his body is very fluffy. He's 5 months old now, and never matted before, but now I find that he has little matts here and there where the new hair growth and old hair meet. |
