for those of you with 2 or more yorkies I am considering getting another yorkie puppy. I think I might be crazy. We currently have one 4 month old yorkie, Barney, and a 15 year old pomchi, Max. Max cannot tolerate Barney. Unfortunately, Barney adores Max and he is constantly jumping at him and trying to play. Max has many health issues: congestive heart failure, arthritis, spondylosis, a collapsed trachea and epilepsy. Despite all of this, he actually has more good days than bad which is why we have chosen to not put him down. But I am fearful that Barney is too much for him. I was thinking that if we had another puppy, Barney would have a playmate and leave Max alone. I keep them separated most of the time, but every now and then Barney manages to get to him. I am wondering if those of you who have two yorkies let them stay in the same crate together. I was thinking that it would be nice if Barney had a playmate when he has to be crated during my work hours. Do these seem like selfish reasons to get another puppy? |
We have 4 and they are the best of friends they all all within 3 years of each other. I never feel guilty leaving or work because they have each other!! I say go for it! (Mine are not crated) they have free roam of about 40% of the home when we are gone. |
I have 2 sisters, 2 yrs. of age. They adore each other. I got the Gracie first, for abt 7 months, she was an only furbaby. Hard to train, would only eat from my hand, cried at night. I felt like she was lonely. We got a chance to purchase her sister and jumped at the chance. What a difference it made with Gracie. They seemed to recognize each other right away. Gracie started using the potty pad like Katierose, eating dry kibble and sleeping all night. I would highly recommend getting a second furbaby.:animal-pa |
I had a matriarch that was older and decided I would buy another baby so that when my matriarch died, I would not go nuts. True to my normal character, over the next 16 months, I went out and bought not ONE puppy, but FIVE.....these 5 became my "little pack of pets", and while they got along with my matriarch, they did not pester her to death....they played among themselves, and were the best of friends. |
I have two girls I wouldn't have it any other way. I love watching them play together. :). |
Yorkiemom, I had to laugh when I read that you bought five. I can totally understand why you would do this. My situation is similar to lover of cats. Barney's breeder has called me with one more puppy left from the litter. She is selling him at 1/2 the price we purchased Barney for. I am not sure of what to do. I know what I want to do, but I am afraid my husband would boot me out the door. |

I was so torn on if I should get her or not. And I was afraid what DH would say too. So I totally relate. The thread tells it all! :p |
I'd go for it, Barneysmommy! |
My DH was a real unhappy camper when I got the first yorkie- not too pleased when I bought home the second two years later- but guess who sat on his lap all thru his cancer treatments and protected him... He loves those little dogs as much as the rest of us! Yes to two! |
I had exactly the same situation as you do -- Jezebel, a very active puppy and Sassy, a 13 year old senior. Jezebel was constantly wanting to play with Sassy, and Sassy wanted nothing to do with her. I was constantly having to play referee -- protecting Sassy and distracting Jezebel. Sassy deserved to be left alone as she wanted in her old age and final years, and Jezebel deserved an outlet and a playmate. I would bring her to the dog park and she was the most social dog there and totally in her element. When Jezebel was a year old, I saw an advertisement for someone needing to re-home a neutered male that was only three weeks younger than she was, and, like her, was a larger Yorkie. Close in age, close in size, similar energy levels .... what a great fit! They did a meet and greet and got along great, so Chuy came home with us. The changes in the dynamics were immediate. Chuy would occasionally sniff my senior, but didn't try to engage her. When Jezebel wanted to play, she left Sassy alone and played with Chuy. He was the best thing ever for BOTH of them. Sassy got the peace she deserved, and Jezebel got the playmate she needed. |
Does DH have a birthday, an annerversary, Presidents Day, Boss' Day, any kind of day, that you can use to get that puppy FOR HIM for!! We have Earth Day on 4/22, and St.Georges Day on 4/23.....If DH is a "George" you got it in the bag! I would go for it....you can never have too many Yorkies....until you get into the double digits! |
If it is "selfish" to get a "companion" for Barney, then I am completely selfish...that is exactly why I have two (2) Yorkies...that is exactly why I got Mia...Brody needed a friend like him. If it was me, and I could afford puppy # 2 that's been offered, I would not be here on YT asking what to do...I'd be driving over to pick that puppy up and updating you all when I got back...or from my phone at rest stops. You know ;) what works with your DH...use those feminine powers when you get home with the puppy, girl! :sidesplt: |
1 Attachment(s) I just got my second puppy. I have two large dogs (12), and got teddy 7 months. The big dogs tolerated him but that is it. Teddy wanted to play with them. I just got him a brother. They have been together 3 days and best decision ever. They sleep in same crate and play all day together. My older dogs appreciate the break as well. |
Thanks for all of the responses. This morning, I "jokingly" mentioned the idea of a playmate for Barney. DH was not happy. I am continuing to test the waters. After we got home from church, I mentioned how sad poor Barney must have been all by himself. We had Max up on the couch out of reach. Right now, he is attacking the squeaky pig from Wal-Mart. I just threw in another advertisement saying that he really needs a playmate.....no response from husband:( I appreciate the experiences you all have shared. It helps to address some of my concerns. |

I think two is wonderful. If they could talk I think only Yorkies, would want a brother or sister. You would still be the Mommy of course so number one in Barney's heart. |
Awwww...it may take a little time to grow on your DH...hope not too long, because this sounds like a wonderful opportunity, and your older baby will likely appreciate the playmate as much as your younger baby. |
Same situation here...We have a husky and morkie and they absolutely LOVE each other. the husky is older by about a yr and when we brought lily home skye (husky) was in love with her from the start and vice versa. we moved to Japan and couldn't bring skye last minute because her microchip was defective (ughhhhhhhhhh) so lily was alone when we got here and she looked really depressed and home sick so we thought another puppy would help her so....we got Taka (yorkie). Lily really cant stand him because he will not let her sleep! lily will play a little bit with him until he starts jumping on her then she gets angry and finds somewhere where he cant go and sleeps. its kind of frustrating because we were hoping she would play with him but that wasn't the case so now i have to watch them to make sure lily doesnt snap at him. She has become a meanie pants since we got to Japan. My reason is because she misses Skye as do we :( since your puppy is only 4m old he should be fine with a playmate!! i say go for it!! :D sorry for the venting lol |
I have four and believe me I am glad they all have each other whether they get along all the time or not. I have observed so much silent communications between two or all of them it isn't funny. Personally I think they NEED another dog to help them remember that the ARE dogs. BUT if dh isn't n favor of it tread lightly or he might just make your life miserable. |

update: I took Barney to our vet today to get him started on heart worm medication. I asked the vet for his opinion on having two yorkies. He said it was a great idea and said that two would not be any more work than having one. He also said that yorkies are social and are better behaved when they have a friend rather than having to be home alone when I am at work. I plan to share this information with hubby when he gets home. |
I don't have 2 yorkies.... BUT I have a 11 year old poodle and a 10 month old yorkie who adore each other. I don't remember what I did when I only had one small pup. They love each other and it has been the best decision DH and I have made. He agrees that it was the best move for our family. |

I agree with the double. Crimson is my first real puppy(not living with my mom) and I always said if I ever got a puppy I would get 2 but then the $ came in! BOO! |
We did exactly the same thing. We had a 16 year old yorkie Dexter when we got Abbey. He liked her but she was far too energetic for him. He was too old and tired to play. He tolerated her but mostly he would run and hide. So we ended up getting Owen as a playmate for Abbey and everyone was happy and got along famously. Poor Dexter finally passed away. We sure miss him alot but now Abbey and Owen are the best of buds. I certainly recommend having more than one. |
I was looking to see if there was an update. Please let us know what your DH says. The Doctor knows best, right? ;):p:D |

We Started out with a Pikegenese and a Sheltie. We were wondering around in the per store one day ( I know, :( I never realized about pet stores until I came to this site, no more pet stores for me) and the lady working there told us about how yorkies dont shed and are hypoallergenic. ( didnt mention the large ammount of grooming and the hard to potty train, but I still love them) and we bought both the sisters because they were so attached. Then last fall my pickagenese was hit by a car and killed. We somehow ended up with two more yorkies. (males, not related) Now I have a pack and love them like they were my own kids. :) they tend to aggervate my sheltie ( shes 12) but she enjoys playing with them and hearding them all around the house :) Good luck!! |
I think they are addicting, my Bentleys only 5 months old and I'm already researching breeders for a girl lol (keep in mind I already have 2 other Chihuahuas) I have just been holding off because hes not fully potty trained so I cant have another puppy relieving themselves everywhere lol besides I want to enjoy his puppy-ness, but they would definitely be happy playing together. :) |
