OMG I'm horrified! 1 Attachment(s) I made my Ellie an appointment to get groomed, mostly to get her rear end cut and a bath. I walked in and the groomer said "oh my God she's matted" I was like what??!! She asked me if I was giving her baths and I told her yes, weekly because she was a little oily. She told me the only thing to do now is shave her but to wait a couple of weeks because its still chilly here!!! I do brush her but she fights me and the brush bad! Her hair is not all tangly to me?? I don't want her shaved because she will lose all her black hair and will be all silver :(. I feel horrible! |
I would get a second opinion. Find a different groomer. See if they can work with her. |
There seems to be no shortage of "groomers" these days. If your dog is not matted as the person you talked to says then find another one. Some "groomers" only know how to shave. They honestly do not want to do anything else. So many people have dropped off their dogs with specific directions only to pick up a scalped doggy! If she fights the brush, have tried just combing her a little at a time? Sometimes it does take a lot of patience to train them to accept grooming. I would also be concerned that if she fights you during a grooming session that she will do the same with the groomer. That can sometimes be a cause of injury.. Maybe try to get her a little more accepting of the comb and try to find a groomer that won't scalp her. If you can get someone to hold her for you maybe you could trim her backside yourself. |
I think I would get another opinion by another groomer. Also I would work very slow and give your baby a treat while slowly brushing her coat. Once they learn that you are gentle and not pulling their hair they will trust you.Treats work wonders. Susan |
Good idea, I think I will look for someone else. Has anyone had good luck with Petco or Petsmart? I have tried doing it a little at a time and I think I need to get a better brush/comb and have someone hold her. Idk I just think shaving her is a little extreme!:( |
i agree/ go to a different groomer/ the groomers at the pet smart are very good at least in Montana |
Also, I would recommend checking YELP reviews for dog groomers in your city/town. can be helpful! |
What kind of brush are you using on her? |

I'm not sure what brand but I attacked a pic, I bought it at Petco when I got her. I actually just brushed her and she let me!!! She had a few snags but IMO she wasn't matted or snarly? |
It won't let me post the pic of the brush says the file is too big?? I called petsmart, they have a puppy bath service and spoke to the girl who seemed to know what she was talking about....I will find out if I can stay I definitely will NOT leave her alone there. |
I started my puppy out just brushing a little bit every night and kept at it. Don't give up and be patient. Try to do it when you are watching TV or find another time when you are relaxed. I also did this getting her used to the clippers. At first I didn't have a clippers so I used my Sonic toothbrush (not the brush part, only the handle) and kept running over her body and head until she got used to the sound and vibration. Eventually I found a small, cheap Wahl clippers and did the same thing to her. Now she usually doesn't flinch at the groomers and is more relaxed. Just be consistent and keep brushing. I know trying to brush a squirming puppy is hard but keep in mind it's for the puppy's own good. I know you can do it. |
Thanks I will try that, I think I was picking the wrong times to try o brush her, I need to wait until he's more relaxed. How many times a day should she be brushed? |

And I also def think you should look for another groomer. How bizarre. Good luck!! |

She looks younger, and when the adult coat starts coming in, they can tend to tangle right at the skin. It can be nasty if you don't keep it brushed. Be sure to get down deep when you brush, not just the top layer. I also like the Madan Brush. |

Link: Grooming - Dawn's Yorkies Plus, if your groom says that shaving your pup is the only option than you need another groomer!! |
My Chloe hates to be brushed fights me all the time and I use the Maden Brush. I mostly use a metal comb. You can find them at any pet store. I also have the smaller Maden comb which is a small metal comb. The maden one to do her face and legs. I also use a grooming spray wetting my Chloe down before combing her. I'm sure you could can also find a detangling spray at a pet store. I would try the detangling spray combing and brushing her before shaving her down. |

Thank you, thank you all for the great advice! I love this site, I don't know hat I would do without it! :). I am going to try finding a good comb and spraying her down with conditioner or a detangling spray before shaving her! Unfortunately, I live in the willy whacks and don't have a huge choice of groomers  I think I may try petsmart after I try the good advice. Thanks again :D |
There is also spray conditioner that you can use to help make the job easier. I also use a heavy conditioner after a bath at that age. |
The groomer also told me not to bathe her before bringing her back to be shaved in 2 weeks. Should I bathe her and use a conditioner or do it while her fir is dry? |

I love the Madan brush from Jenny at toplinepet.com, but I also love a wooden pin brush. Maximo sells them, and its very massaging to brush with it. I think both brushes are important, and I also love the mustache comb that Jenny sells. I have read here that cornstarch can break apart mats, but I haven't tried it. Good luck with your baby. #1 All Systems Wood Pin Massage Dog Brush |
I did read the link it was very helpful! I will order the special brushes for sure, but in the mean time what can I get at the pet store to start with while waiting for the good ones to come? |

One thing w/groomers that work for someone, they don't have 2+ hrs to take tangles off a puppy. It's just not done. Why work on 1 pup when in those 2 hrs, you can get 3-4 pets done, esp if you're a paid employee. You might have more luck w/an independent groomer that has her own shop (preferably not on the weekends bc that's the busiest time). It will cost more to have your pup dematted, but might not need to be shaved. When I was working for Aussie as a mobile groomer, I had approx 15-20mins to drive to the customer & 20-30mins to groom them, then onto my next customer the other side of LA...no time for dematting (unless it was requested ahead of time, even then, my boss only gave me an x-tra 30 mins loll). |

Puppies have that fuzzy undercoat of puppy fur and it can easily get matted right down next to their skin, underneat their dark coat that you are probably brushing when you do brush her....you are not getting down thru that long coat to the fuzzy hair next to the skin....that is why she is saying your baby is matted....and boy does it mat! And if that is indeed the case, you are going to have to shave it down to get thru it...and your baby will not look the same to you....if she is a true black, which a lot of cotton coated dogs are, she will be black when you shave all that hair down.....her skin will be dark under that coat...separate the hair down to her skin....her skin will be dark, not a pinkish white.... |
