Ugh So I was planning on getting bear in may after discussing keeping him with mom for twelve weeks. She agreed and said that is what she feels is best too. Today I get a call saying that her kids have several tournaments over the next few weeks so the puppies need to go to their new homes sooner. The pups are 8 weeks. I know she is a single mom, but what a lame excuse. Lucky for me, I already have an older female, an older male, and a puppy to teach him proper socialization, and he is the hardiest of the bunch, best eater and most energetic so hopefully I won't have to deal with hypoglycemia (nutrical on hand if needed though) I have all I need ready now, pulled it out, and got set up (already had it from teddy). However, feel bad for those unknowing owners getting a pup so early. Will post more pics tomorrow. |
And I know that is the risk I took with a byb |
Before coming to this site I didn't know that it was best to let the pup stay with their mom until they are 12 weeks old. We got both Nena and Rufus when they were 8 weeks. |

While it is always best to keep them with their mom as long as possible, I think it is still better that you go ahead and take Bear in early rather than have him staying at a house with people who aren't going to take care of him. At least you are well educated and do have other pups to help with him. I won't say my opinions on BYBs, as you are well versed on the dangers of doing that and you are the one that will deal with anything that comes from it. I will say that I pray Bear is healthy and happy for a very long time with you and Teddy in his new loving home :) |
She takes wonderful care, I saw him at 5 weeks and saw what she feeds them and how they interact with her other 5 dogs ( only 3 are breeder) (1male and 2 female). She did not test but the breeder she got her maltese from and her yorkies from did. Hers has no health issue. She breeds morkies and I love the mix so had to be byb. The only thing I do not like is that she lets the pups go early. Which I thought I solved from talking to her. My first pup is from her as well got him at 9 weeks (but didn't know any better always had large shelter adopted dogs before) |
Good luck. At least you know what you are dealing with. I got Chloe at 9 weeks from a BYB. I didn't know any better. It was before I joined YT. I love her more than anything and wouldn't change it for the world now that I have her. However if I were to get another one day I will go to a breeder. I can't wait to see pics. I bet he is adorable and will have lots of fun learning from your other dogs. |
Pics are in my album |

Donna is right that it's a personal choice so I hope that you really don't feel bad. |

BTW, I have one purebred AKC reg. Yorkie, and 3 Morkies, and without any doubt I have 4 equally perfect and wonderful pets for life. |
To the OP: Little Bear is adorable. I love the look on his face in the second picture in your album. Good luck, and I can't wait to hear more about him, and see more photos. |

Mine too. It's a job I do 24/7/365 that I don't get paid for, yet I do more than the job I DO get paid for. It's that important. To me, that is. |

Doesn't make him any less cute or lovable!! :D |
Ugh I've had dogs all of my life both mutt & pure. After being on this site for the last few months I'm sure learning some things. I too picked up my pup at 8 weeks but I didn't know any better. Not sure if this is a Yorkie thing or if it should apply to all. I picked up my Min Pin when she was 5 weeks old because her mom got bit by a snake. Lots of people sell or let go of pups at 6 & 8 weeks. My pup is fine but I still watch her like a hawk. Can someone tell me if this 12 week rule should apply to all puppies?? |

I wish it applied to all breeds since they learn from their litter mates. I don't have any personal experience with getting large young puppies since both of my 12 year old large dogs were rescued from the shelter at 3 months and 6 months. But from fostering, the older pups do better in single dog homes |
I look forward to watching Bear grow up on YT:D |
Yes, he is mixed, yorkie maltese, the poodle thing is his maltese mommy |
