Question about Julie's Upcoming Spay http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ing-fixed.html I just finished reading this thread and I'm going to ask the same question about Julie (shih tzu). Today (Saturday), she turned five months old and is scheduled for her spay on Monday 4/22/2013. Is it too early for her? Starlette |

Best to wait until the growth plates close, determined by xray. |
Some people say, when a dog is older than 5, it may be riskier. My mum made the choice to spay Cora, last year. She's three. And I honestly felt so bad for her. I blame the vet though. They never cleaned her up. She had dried blood on her. And we had to clean it ourselves, after the anesthetic wore off. She could barely lie down. If I was to ever adopt another girl I'd find it really hard to do it. On the other hand, so many people I know have said their girls are great within a few days, mind wise, and back to normal exercise by three weeks. Just wished Cora had the same experience. I can still see the scar, and her tummy looks weird now. She still grunts when she you touch her belly. It just doesn't sit right with me. I tried to convince my mum to take her to the vet again, but she thinks it's pointless. Plus Cora lives with mum, Jasper lives with me. So I don't have as big a say. |
I think each vet s different. My vet said to do before first heat because if you wait until after the first heat it coud increase chances of developing breast cancer. She was talking canine and not Yorkie specific. I haven't research the validity of her statement. With that said, I had planned on July when Piper is 8 months |
Have all of her baby teeth fallen out yet? If not, wait a bit to see if they will fall out on their own. If they don't fall out, they will have to be pulled and that can be done at the same time as the spay. Anesthesia is risky, so if you can do that all at once instead of two different surgeries that is better. |

I wouldn't do it before 6 months but still before the first heat. |
From what I've read, the first heat comes at 9 months? |
You want it to be BEFORE the first heat, not after. |
Kyra had her first and only heat the day she turned 6 months old it started. She at the time was barely 2 lbs so neither I nor the vet were willing to risk spaying her at the time. After xrays showing growth plates were closed at 11 and a half months she had her spay and did great with it. |
I would spay her as scheduled. |
@107barney - Why do you suggest that I keep the scheduled appointment? |
I would spay at about 6 months old. You could reschedule it, but I wouldn't and I would have it done. I spayed my dog early. Good luck. |
I would wait just to see if teeth need to be pulled until 8 months, mine has two canines that might need to be pulled. |
