Ears weight and bone structure? My puppy is now 12 weeks or 3 months should I say, in the mornings his ears stand up but as the day goes on he drops them and they don't come back up until the next day.. Is this normal or will they nvr go up? My previous yorkie that passed ears were up by 7 weeks according to the breeder I purchased her from. Also, I purchased my new puppy from a different breeder but I noticed his bones are very fragile feeling and thin.. But he eats a lot he now weight 2lbs does this mean he was poorly bred?? |
The fact that the puppies ears are down is not a problem they will go up naturally, I would not touch them. But if they are not up by 4 months you can tape them in a pancake style with medical tape, with that support they should be up in a week or so (you should also shave the hair around the ear as it may hold them down). But if they are up in the morning they will completely stand up eventually. The ears should stand up by then as this is part of the AKC standards, although I think it looks cute. Also about the bones being fragile I would recommend a puppy vitamin just to add good vitamins to his diet. Many backyard breeders don't feed the puppy to make them seem "smaller". So then they gain weight instantly when you get them. Also remember Yorkies are not naturally small dogs so if you have a tiny one which you do you should keep a constant eye out. Hypoglycemia is common in these tiny pups. |
I think this is normal. one of Sonic's ears did this, eventually they will stand :) |
Thank you! Bentley is my puppies name as well. I just want to make sure, online says so many things about bad breeding and the out come. I love him either way. |
1 Attachment(s) Yes lots of bad breeders but I'm sure your baby will be fine. Bentley also weighed 2lbs at 12 weeks the vet said he would be a 5 pounder :) would love to see pics of yours. This is Bentley |
If you share the name of your breeder we might be able to tell you if he was poorly bred. |
When I picked up furrybaby to bring home around 13 weeks, furrybaby's ears were leaning over a tad but by the time we came home, they were erect and have been ever since. The breeder told me I could tape them, it's all normal and nothing to worry about, but they ended up not needing tape. The structure of your baby is nothing to be concerned about either. Some yorkies are very fine boned with little muscle, they vary in weight size and are from the very best blood lines. Do you have any pictures of your puppy to share? |
so to answer your question, No, it doesn't mean your yorkie was poorly bred. Post pictures when you can and those that have yorkies can give you a better opinion ;0) Weight isn't a problem either. At 32 oz at 12 weeks, it's scheduled to weigh approx 4-4.5 pounds as an adult with a 1.5 pound margin give or take. But I think 13 weeks gives an even better idea although mine isn't full grown yet but furrybaby has stayed very close to the weight chart. Do enjoy your furball and don't worry, it'll grow up to be a wonderful companion! |
yes!! i love my new baby, hes such a character! so cuddly too! for the breeder, her name was judy. From the san ramon ca. Was called Judy's Yorkies. I'm not sure how to post a picture? |

OP your post is asking if your pup is from a bad breeder. I wouldn't panic or worry too much but this breeder is highly suspect to me so I would be vigilant in watching your puppy for any signs of illness etc. But for now just enjoy your pup! Many of us here have had bad experiences but many of us have been lucky (not me) but many others! Your pups ears will come around but I do have 2 that their ears never did come up, despite all attempts at forcing them! I love them no matter what! Your baby is adorable! Please stick around and learn more information about breeders and Yorkies in general, no matter how much you think you know believe me you will learn new things here! Welcome to YT! |

It doesn't do any good to "close the barn door after the cows get out" at this point I agree with Lynz... love and enjoy your puppy. Watch for health issues and learn. Next time research before buying the puppy. I would have purchased differently if I knew what I know now... but then I wouldn't have Remy! |

Please watch this video. |
A red flag to me on her website would be the face she doesn't have pedigree, the sires and dams. Looks like a pet store rather than a dog breeder, looks like she may be a newby website is plain. |

Eyebrow clipper is a great idea. I've always used mustache groomers, but I bet eyebrow clippers are even safer. Thanks for the tip. We never quit learning :) |

However, like Lynzy said, don't worry with that now. Just enjoy your pup! |
For the ears, Jasper took the longest out of the litter for them to stand up. One ear went up for a month or so, then the other came up. And this was when he was about 4 months, they both sat up. I was worried for a while, cause his litter, they all had ears up. apart from the girl. His daddy actually had a perament one ear up, and one ear down. He's the skinniest out of the litter, and smallest. I think 1lb and a 1/2, or under. the majority were 2lb. He is started to fill out more now. under 7lbs if he is not sick. He has a very long body, when he stretches. but can curl up so small when he wants. I wouldn't worry ;) |
It does sound like your pup may have a bit of a calcium deficency since his ears seem to go down after he has been up and about during the day. Adding a little cottage cheese or plain yogurt to his food or as a treat daily may help. If a Yorkie has ancestors with ears that did not stay up he may have inherited the same issue. Helping him along by trimming the ear tips, as stated, may be helpful. I have read about tapping the ears and some people have had success doing that. A lot does depend on genetics though. Getting your info about Yorkies from successful professional breeders is usually much more helpful than watching animal planet. The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America would be your best source of Yorkie information. Of course the library here on YT is also very informative. YT has some very informed reputable breeders as well. |
