Doubting myself... 1 Attachment(s) Hello all! I'm new here to the forum. I have attached a file to my puppy which I did not name yet. But I just keep thinking to myself that maybe my puppy isn't purebred but I seen the parents on site and he is akc register. The reason I feel that way is because he so big for a 12 week old weight at 5lb. The breeder said he is overweight because he likes his puppy to eat good. I have no dought he is over weight. He is bigger than my 1year old maltese who weigh 4 lb. isn't maltese and yorkie somewhat similar? The puppy have such big paws. Could all this be because the breeder over feed him so he is over grown for his age? Any input greatly appreciated. Thanks! Kim |

He is a cute, chunkie monkey! I can see his roly, poly tummy! :) |
Hi Kim!! Welcome to YT. Hmm well he is a little cutie that is for sure! He looks pure- LOL He does look a little chunky monkey.. but in a super adorable way. He might just be a bigger Yorkie. I don’t think he is going to be big because he is eating too much- if you say his paws are big, the chances of him being bigger are high. |

he looks purbreed to me.....from what ive read on other threads size can vary greatly with yorkies...so you might be able to be part of the teapot club when hes full grown but that certainly doenst make him not purebreed. |
He is totally adorable! We have a few yorkies in forums that are chunky  |
He is adorable. Just remember the tiny yorkies can have lots of health problems. There are yourkies on this forum that are 15 lbs. Lots to love. |
Thanks all for your input. My kids are attached to him already, just got him yesterday. I wanted to be fair to both dogs by taking him everywhere with us. Meaning my maltese goes everywhere in his little purse. But with him looks like I will need a suitcase just to hide him LOL. j/k |
I love this ChunkieMonkie monaker! He is absolutely adorable, really he is. Big paws for sure, but tell me you absolutely can't help but love the heck out of him? he is too cute!:):) |
He looks all Yorkie to me! Welcome to the forum :) Who taped his ears? I don't really think that it's necessary with his young age, is why I ask. Yorkies come in all sizes - in the origins, they used to be larger than they are now days. The great thing is that the larger ones have fewer health issues. Feeding has nothing to do with his size. Please feed him when he is hungry (there is no such thing as overfeeding a puppy, ok?). Great to have you both here! :) |

Oh I did  The breeder told me to go ahead and start while they are young. Is that not right? He has such big floppy ears. |
He's adorable! It looks like his facial hair has been cut? ( Maybe whoever did that gave up before they trimmed his feet.) I have a big tall beautiful long legged blonde named Bella & a rough tough boy named Tuffy. Both over standard but very loved! |

It is hard to say at this age if he is all Yorkie. Did he come with his ears taped? He is not over weight. Puppies do not get obese. They are growing. It looks like you got yourself what is termed a "tea pot." It's just an endearing term for a large Yorkie. He is going to be a big boy if he is 5lbs at 12 weeks. I hope your breeder did not make any promises to you about his weight. It does sound like they are misleading you about his size. Sadly, many people who sell dogs online are very dishonest. I hope you love this puppy anyway. You can always get a DNA test if you really want to know. He could be a very over sized Yorkie but a good breeder would not be breeding stock that produced that kind of off standard offspring. He really is adorable and I'm sure he will be a wonderful pet. Just try to stay away from the internet when buying a dog. Too many scams out there. Please do not put him on a diet. He is not fat. He is a growing pup that is going to be a larger than standard Yorkie. |

Welcome. What an adorable chunky monkey. I agree he looks pure to me. Big or little I bet he has such a sweet personality. |
Hi and welcome to YT! You will love it here. Lots of great people willing to share information from their vast experiences and knowledge!! I don't have any info to share with you but wanted you to know, we are glad you joined us!! Your puppy is beautiful! No matter how "big" he gets! You'll still love him bunches!!! Again welcome!!!!!:) |
Puppies dont get fat he is just growing to the weight his body needs. Please dont withhold food because you think hes getting too big. hes a growing pup and It can affect his skeleten and organs if you do. If he does have any excess weight he will run it off. |
Ag he's adorable, why is size such an issue? Pups are adorable and Yorkies even more so. I am quite sure that with the "cute" factor you gonna love him no matter what size he's going to be, but name him already! |
Oh, your baby is really, really cute! Congratulations and welcome! |
Don't be too quick to judge about overeating... LOTS of the Yorkies here (mine included) have Standard sized parents, grow to be Teapots (7+ lbs) and show that ability starting about the age of yours now. As far as how you feed it... This is my way to do it, and not used by all here. But I leave food out 24/7 for mine. This way they can eat or nibble when they want. I have had some evidence that when one feeds them once/twice/whatever times a day, that they gobble everything up because (I think) they think it may not come again. I think that this way eases the pressure on them not to gobble it all up. Just IMHO. |
So.....have you thought of a name for this adorable fellow? We have lots of yorkie "cousins" and only one is a male. His name is Charlie......he's a happy, active 9lb. ball of energy @7 months of age! He is such a ball of fun, as I am sure your little guy will be! |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk! Your pup is just adorable. A friend of mine has a 10 lb. Yorkie and she is loved so very much. Give your pup a name and make him your own. He is very lucky to have a nice home. I'm sure you'll have so much love for each other. :) |

No, no name yet. So far everyone been calling all kinds of name from fatty, chunky, chubby...etc..LOL. We love him no matter what but just concern about the weight seems he cannot even keep his balance and gets tired very easy. He drags his big belly behind all over the play. He also gives up very easily like the water is in the kitchen is he throws himself on the floor and whines until I pick him up to take him to the kitchen then he will walk. |

I think you should name him Monkey :) |
He looks like my Bailey who is now a healthy 12 lbs at a year old! Your baby is sooo cute!! Doesn't matter how big he gets, you'll have more to love! :) |

There are a lot of genetic weakness in many Yorkies being sold these days. One of them is a weakness in the knees. There are many other issues that he could be suffering from. The only reason that he could be over weight as a puppy that I know of would be if the thyroid is not functioning properly. He does not appear fat in your photo but I will say he is way over sized for a normal Yorkie. It sounds critical for this pup to be seen by a vet right away. Make sure you tell the vet where you got him and that you are concerned about his inability to walk normally and that he is having problems walking and functioning as he should. It is not normal for a puppy not to be able to walk, run and play normally no matter what sized it is. There are plenty of larger breed pups that run and play despite their size. One other thing is that I do see a Yorkie like coat on him. These pups many times have a thin coat. The Yorkie does not have an under coat like other dogs and they tend to get cold easily especially as puppies. They like to be picked up because they get warmth and comfort from being held. Try to make sure he has a warm place to cuddle up in and maybe a blanket when you can't warm him up yourself. |
