Top knot?!? Yes or no for boys? There seems to be much debate over putting a top knot on boys. I know breed standards say yes. But does it make them look to much like a girl? And how do you make them leave the knot in because my little fella won't lol :lol tears he pulls it out first chance he gets but if he doesn't have it in then his hair falls down in his eyes :). Any thoughts ? |
My Tucker will not leave one either! He will rub on the floor until it comes out! Maybe its a guy thing! My vet laughed at me when I went in with one in Tuckers hair! It was red, he said the least I could do was get one with a Harley on it! We do love our vet though! I guess it is just preference bow or no! |
Lol I think you might be right... It's gotta be a guy thing :D! |
I tried putting Joeys up and he didnt mind it much. My MILs dog went CRAZY though and rubbed on everything until it was out and his hair was back to normal. |
My Male Sneakers won't wear a little Bow in his top knot, rubs it off on the floor like others here have said. However, he likes (or doesn't mind) wearing a Bandanna, and I think that My Female Becca prefers him wear that as well. That's gotta be a girl thing ;) |
My marley looks HANDSOME with his top knot :) i do not put a bow on thoug because all the people thinks is a girl but with out and my girl with it makes a difference, they rub on the carpet when i just put it on cause is kinda tie but they just loose it a lil and leave it on :) LOVE MY KIDS<3 |
My Mozzi is going to wear bows, even if it kills me! Seriously tho, didn't start immediately with him, which really, really helps, but he is doing fairly well. To start, the band should be very loose, but tight enough to stay. If it's put in correctly, they should barely feel it. Once they are very used to the band, try very lightweight bows and work up from there. It also helps to train them to lay their head on a folded towel or pillow. Mozzi already has a tan Susan Lanci bow. I'm also planning bows in camo, denim, dark colors and the ones w/tiny plastic things like basketballs, flags, and other "manly" things. Also, it helps to distract them immediately after putting the band/bow in, a walk, play session, etc. I also love the tiny claw clips, they are fast, easy and light weight. |
1 Attachment(s) I have always kept Huey in more of a silky cut instead of a Yorkie cut so we haven't worn a topknot until recently when I bought a grooming table and can now hold him still long enough to put one in. I am growing out his visor & I have found the tiny scrunchies from goodys hold very well. What removes it from his head is his daddy. Every time I put a top knot on him, dh says "your mama put you in a ponytail" and as soon as I turn my head it is out. I know his daddy is taking it out because the dog does not put the scrunchie on top of the kitchen countertop. |
Joel will keep his in but I get annoyed because everyone assumes he's a girl.....heck, they assume he's a girl without a topknot haha |

I do not have a male but have always thought that if we added one to the family one day that we would not do a top knot. I think they are very cute but I guess I get to do the topknot with my KS so I figured on keeping a boy in a puppy cut. I guess it's just personal preference. |
Bogie has a topknot which I just use terry scrunchies to hold it up. He looks silly with short hair on his head. Kinda like a little old man. We call it his rocker ponytail :p |
Yoshi wears a top knot. He used to rub his head on the floor when he was a puppy. But he's used to it now. I even keep it in when he sleeps. When we're in public, I always use a black rubber band or a black scrunchie. He does have bows...black, camo, gold, navy...those types of colors. But everytime I bring him out with a bow, people always say, "What a cute little girl!" So I don't do bows as much as I used to. It's not that I really care...it's just that I'm sick of having to say, "Actually, he's a boy." |
I don't really see the big deal, and when my pups coat grows out I plan to do so. Especially since everyone already assumes he's a girl anyways. But I promise to stay away from pink, and get ones with little skulls, and are less gender defining. |
I don't topknot Blazer very often- sometimes he pulls it out, sometimes he doesn't. DH HATES when I "put him in a ponytail!" I'm trying to grow out Blazer's visor, too (it seems to be taking FOREVER!) so all I can do with his topknot is try... =) |
2 Attachment(s) Brody wears a top knot every day, as does Mia. He does sometimes get the scrunchies (chew toys) out, but I don't think it makes him look less a boy wearing one! |
2 Attachment(s) I am proud that this morning, I did my 1st perfect topknot, 1st try! I have been practicing as I grow out Huey's visor, and it is much more difficult than it looks like it should be, especially with his long ears & trying to get just the right amount of hair put up. Now, if the visor and sides would just grow some more so they can be captured. We are getting there, though. :D |

Teddy used to wear on. it bothered him in beginning when I just banded it, then he got used to it and I could add bows but only ones with elastic attachments. I just recently cut his top knot because husband liked the skater Afro look better. Plus had to do top knot everyday if I wanted to see his face, and everybody called him a girl. Still debate about growing it back out. It all depends on what you prefer |
I love the topknot. Galen hates it. He fights me all the time. I can't imagine trying to get a rubber band in his hair. All I can get in is a barrette bow. And it takes me forever |
First of all, you need to start calling it a Ninja knot so that he realizes it's a very macho thing to do! :p Do not make the mistake of putting the knot too tight, there should be room between his scalp and the band, first start with a band, and when he's use to that you can add a puppy bow, and later a regular bow. |
Charlie wears a ninja knot but no bow |
I started out without a topknot for Deuce until I was sick of cutting the visor so I let it grow and grow. I even grew out the hair near his eyes and I love it. He wears a topknot every day and it's not a problem. Sometimes we do covered elastics or scrunchies and sometimes a bow. People always think he's a girl but I just point out that he has a ponytail just like his daddy. |

My Scampers use to have a topknot all the time. He never really messed with it but his hair is very thick so it would always end up flopping forward in his face no matter which way you put it in. So I gave up on the topknot and just kept his head cut short. I love it because now I can see his beautiful eyes all the time and I think he enjoys not having something in his eyes all the time. If his hair was a little bit thinner I probably would still be keeping it in a topknot. |
