Am I feeding him enough? Hi everyone :) I was wondering how much y'all feed your fur babies. Titus will be 14 weeks at the end of this week and I feed him 1/4 cup three times a day. I just wonder if 1/4 cup is not enough... |
I have fed my guy 1/4 cup in the morning, half of a 1/4 cup at lunch and 1/4 cup at dinner. He s now 7 months and not wanting lunch so he s now getting 1/4 cup in the AM and same at dinner. |
I dont measure what Joey eats. Hes at a healthy weight and so I let him nibble all day. His bowl is kept full so when he wants it, he can eat. |
I always left the bowl full and he would eat when he was hungry. He never over ate and never got fat. Usually there are instructions on the kibble on how many grams per day depending on the weight of the dog |
I hand feed Callie twice a day and leave food in her dish all day and she still doesn't eat what the bag says she should but with puppies I think free feeding is best. |
Sam will be 5 months next week and there are days that I can't get him to eat even 1/2 cup. He's 3 pounds and skinny but not underweight. I plan to try a different food since he's getting low on what I'm giving him now. |

Food quantity How much does Titus weigh and what does the food package recommend for his weight? Is he hungry and gaining weight at the right rate? I know puppies need more food than fully grown dogs, but my boy is 4 yrs old and ten pounds and he only has 3/4 cup total per day. If he eats more he gets fat! Others with similar pup weights and ages will be able to give better comments. |

I found a boutique store that sells Fromm, so I'm going to pick up some sample bags this afternoon. I plan to start out using them as treats, and then work up to mixing with his regular food. |
I think at 14 weeks he could be free fed. I have always done schedule feedings and my two thrive on it. I think at this point, if I left food out for them...they would stuff themselves. I'm actually trying to cut back a tiny bit to get about a half pound off both of my pups. They put on some winter weight, and because I schedule feed, I can control how much they are getting. I don't use a measuring cup, but a shot glass for their food. They get a little less than a shot for breakfast and the same for dinner. They weigh in at 7.5 and 6.5 pounds respectively. They should be around 7 and 5.5-6 lbs... I'm sure with the increase in exercise, they will get there, along with mommy :p Sorry for the tangent! |

Feed As he is relatively young and you do not want to free feed I would keep the 3 times a day feed. Later you could try reducing to 2 times a day and see if he is ok with that. I feed my boy 4 times a day as he gets an acidy stomach if he is empty. It depends on your dog's system. |
With him being so young, I wouldn't worry too much about over-feeding. If he seems hungry, feed more. But I don't think you're feeding him too little either (size depending). Jackson is a 4 1/2 year old 17lb active boy and he eats 1/2 cup per day ... he also gets some wet food, and treats. If he's really active for the day, I'll up it to 2/3 cup per day. His food is over 400 kcal/cup. |
I was having a very difficult time getting Barney to eat. When I got him he was off the growth charts and then, at around 4 pounds he just quit growing. I mentioned it to the vet when he was 14 weeks. My vet said not to worry he was just running off the calories. I went back last week which was more than 6 weeks later and he hadn't gained an ounce. My vet put him on hills diet prescription canned food. It is high calorie and since then he has put on 3 tenths of a pound. Thank goodness. I don't think he is going to be the 8 pound dog we originally planned on, but he is adorable and looks much healthier. He is eating his dry food better now, also. I had tried every kind of food suggested. I guess the lesson I learned is to keep trying until you find the one that works. I cannot even describe how much more active Barney is now that he is eating better. |
